Hi guys,

I'm glad I came across this site. I have a strong feeling that this is where I'll find the help I need. I've been working on this for 3 days and haven't been able to fix either problem yet. I've spent a lot of time searching and reading knowledge bases.

My computer is taking about 5 minutes to start up. :rant2:

Of even greater aggravation is that I can't perform any kind of full scan; it causes my computer to turn off. It doesn't shut down, it actually turns off the power. What's even stranger is that it is totally random so I can't identify what is causing this or when. Besides NAV I've tried Symantec and housecall online scans and the same thing happens. I tried SpyBot and the same thing happens. I tried scanning in safe mode and the same thing happens.

AdAware and SpySubtract were able to search and remove adware and spyware but that didn't solve either of these proplems.

I have xp pro and NIS 2005.

Here are my Hijackthis and Startup (since it takes so long) logs.

Thanks so much for your time and help. :)

Hi Robertallen.
You have a Newdotnet infection.

First, go here to remove it. http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html

Next you need an updated version of HJT

first DELETE your copy of HJT from C:\

Please go here and download HJT (Highjackthis)
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Unzip HijackThis into this folder. When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary.

Close all prgram windows and browsers.

Run HJT - DO NOT FIX ANYTHING

select SAVE LOG, and save it to your HJT folder after you save it, a notepad will pop up. Copy the ENTIRE contents of notepad. Then post the new log here in this thread.

Thanks,
Sky
Hello Skyline, :wavey: Thanks so much for your help. Sorry to take so long to respond. It's been kind of hectic around here. I'm going to try your instructions and then I'll come back here with the fix and the new log. It might be a day or two - bad timing for me right now. Thanks again! Robert
Hi Sky,

I removed newdotnet (didn't help start up time). I downloaded the updated version of HJT, ran, scanned, checked all items, fixed checked, and ran HJT again. Here's the new log:

Robertallen,

We have a problem. In my post above I asked you to run HJT, but DO NOT FIX ANYTHING!
Also, It's still in a temp directory…

Please follow these directions exactly, it may be helpful for you to print them out. PLEASE DO THIS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
Open HJT - Close all windows and browsers EXCEPT HJT.
Select CONFIG
Select BACKUPS
Select all the files listed
Now Select Restore.

PLace HJT in it's own FOLDER:
Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Unzip HijackThis into this folder. When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary.

DELETE the Copy in your Temp folder:
C:\DOCUME~1\Teri\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe

After you have HJT in it's own folder - Rescan with HJT - DO NOT FIX ANYTHING. I repeat DO NOT FIX ANYTHING.
Just Post the new log file here.

Sky
Sky,

Sorry. I wondered about that and should have asked you for clarification before I proceeded. Here is the part that confused me:

When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary.

I can't apologize enough for taking extra time from you while you're trying to help me. I know you are probably trying to help a lot of others too.

I'll be back soon with another log.

Robert
Sky, Please don't shoot me!! There is nothing in backups. I promise I didn't delete anything. I had not even been to config let alone backups until just now. I did put HJT in its own file (c:\hjt) and ran it from there. What in the world did I do wrong? Your instructions said "…have it "fixed checked" it will create a backup file…", so I scanned, checked and clicked 'fix checked' thinking I would have a backup. I see that you have repeated this wording in your second set of instructions, so I'm still confused on what I should have done after scan. Can I do a system restore to get it all back? If so, what exactly do I do after scanning? Do I click 'fix checked' without checking the items? So sorry and thanks so much! Robert
Hi

Yes you should use system restore.

Here is a link to a help page on using system restore

http://www.bay-wolf.com/dk.htm#4a
(Just the first section)

DO NOT TURN OFF SYSTEM RESTORE.

please do so - them reboot and do a new hijackthis log for me - I will be taking over assisting you from skyline.

re Hijackthis in a tempary folder - is it still in a zip folder inside c:\HJT if so you need to extract it from that to run it. If running from a temp zip file it will popup a warning box. If running properly it will not.
Hi Chris,

Thanks a lot for helping. I hope I didn't scare skyline off. I guess you can both tell that I'm really not very technical.

You may have noticed the group clasification of skyline (and lots of others at this site). We are a teaching anti-malware site - much like a teaching hospital instead of a general one. As such all posts made by our trainees until they reach a higher stage are checked by more senior people. In this case your topic was being monitored by me (and others), skyline herself thought it best to hand over to me to finish off the cleanup. She (and others) will be monitoring this topic to learn from it.

So I better do textbook stuff in the cleaning up from now :)

==============================

skyline has already posted a fix in our hidden baord for you (and us to check), and it is good, so I am copying for you to use.

Remove this program if it's present Windows ADControl – Here's how:

Go to Start
Control Panel
Ad / Remove Programs and remove Windows ADControl if it's listed.

Now open HJT and put a check mark beside these entries and select FIX, IF they exist:

NOTE : This first one is optional- If this URL is not known or put there by you, I'd fix it:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://go.compaq.com/2Q00CPT/0409/bF8.asp

These need to be checked:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows AdControl] C:\Program Files\Windows AdControl\WinAdCtl.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

ChrisRLG : I will add one activeX control that needs to be fixed.
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/16f06e267de31a…ip/RdxIE601.cab

Now reboot into safe mode:
Here's how -
*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

Find this folder and delete it ONLY THE FOLDER IN RED
C:\Program Files\Windows AdControl

As long as were in safe mode, lets delete the temp files: Here's how-
Step 1:To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there.
Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted

Reboot normally and post a new HJT file.
Hello Chris, skyline, et al, :)

OK, performed all steps in last set of instructions. Thanks a bunch for sticking with me.

Well looks clean now - BUT. O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP provider 'c:\program files\newdotnet\newdotnet5_20.dll' missing That suggests that the newdotnet uninstall did not work completely - or the restore brought back just part of that program. You cannot fix with Hijackthis - it will not let you because it could kill your internet connection. Before I let you have aprogram that can correct that could you look on your computer and confirm that that file does not exist :- :\program files\newdotnet\newdotnet5_20.dll The folder itself may have gone too. Let me know what the status of that is please.
