Hi, Can anyone help? Keep getting message saying virus trojan horse downloader.Agent.2.BM is found on file C:\WINDOWS\system32\atlus.exe
Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Download HijackThis into this folder.

If required a tutorial is here = Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

Links to Hijack This! v 1.98.2:

http://tools.radiosplace.com/HijackThis.exe
http://spywarewarrior.com/files/HijackThis.exe

Run it from that folder.

Click "Scan".

DO NOT "FIX" ANYTHING WITH IT YET!!!
FIXING THE WRONG THING COULD RENDER YOUR SYSTEM INOPERABLE!!!

Click "Save log".

Reply to this thread, and "copy/paste" the ENTIRE CONTENTS of the log file into this thread. :)

Hello hannabee,
This is quite a complicated infection that you have. It will take several steps to remove it and no contact with the internet during part of the fix (you will be told when to disconnect). Please follow the steps very carefully as this infection often re-installs itself if something is done in the wrong order.

Are you still getting the Blue Screen error on your computer? If so please post all the letters and words in the error here with your next post so that we can determine what is causing the error.

1. Download Service Filter
2. Extract it to it's own folder.
3. Click on ServiceFilter.vbs
4. A text file called POST_THIS will be in the same folder
5. Please use Edit>Select all then Edit>Copy to obtain the contents
6. Please Post them into this thread using 'Add Reply'
Hi thanks for taking the time to help with this. The blue screen hasnt appeared since Micah told me to do the things in the above posts. The screen i was getting was blue and told me a problem had been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to the computer. Then it said other things about remove any new files and stuff. It had a code: STOP:0x000000E8 (0x8112E980, 0x8118F628, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) There was a counter counting up at the bottom of the page and when it got to around 80 it restarted itself. Hello Hanabee,

Please do the following steps making sure that you have disconnected your modem or otherwise prevented contact with the internet during the fix. It is very important to follow each step in order as this is the only way to make sure this infection does not return.

Because I haven't seen a recent HijackThis log it is possible that the file names have changed. If that is the case I will need to see a new log. I have included this in the instructions farther along. I would like you to download an alternate browser so that if it is necessary for you to use the internet before the fix is complete, you are able to use Mozilla 1.73. Please click here to download and then install mozilla to your computer. Using Internet Explorer will cause the infection to Reinstall making the fix more complicated.

Step#1:

Please save these instructions to WordPad so that you have them accessible while following the steps. You also may want to print out these directions as the Internet will not be available. You must disconnect from the internet totally, as staying connected while fixing will prevent the fix from working. Also please keep Internet Explorer closed throughout as opening it will reinstall the infection. Read through all the instructions so that you can ask any questions now, before you disconnect from the Internet.

Please continue with the next step and if you run into any problems with the current one, just keep going through the list step by step. Just be sure to let us know what the problem was when you finally reply.

Step#2: (if XP - if not XP then normal instructions to show hidden files)

Please download and open the following zip file. Double-click on the file inside the zip and when it asks you if you would like to merge the file into your registry, please answer yes. This will make sure all files are visible on your computer.
http://www.davehigham.zen.co.uk/downloads/xphidden.zip

Step#3:

1. Please download About:Buster from here: http://tools.zerosrealm.com/AboutBuster.zip.

2. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster. Do NOT use it yet

Step#4:

Another program to download is Registrar Lite for use later: Please download Registrar Lite and install it to C:\Program Files\RegLite\ . This is a registry editor that is very easy to use.

Step#5:

Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix

1. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE

2. Click on start > control panel > administrative programs > services. Look for a service called Network Security Service (NSS). Double click on that service and click stop and then set the startup to disabled. Also write down the name and path of the file listed in the Path to executable field. This filename must be deleted below.

Step#6:

***Please note all these names may have changed since your previous HJT log - if they have changed and you find none of the ones I have listed please stop the fix. Reboot into Normal Mode and Scan again with HijackThis and Using Mozilla POST a new HijackThis log file with details of what you have done so far so, I can give you the correct file names***

Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the following processes if they exist:

C:\Documents and Settings\Vicki\Application Data\aadi.exe

C:\WINDOWS\System32\l?ass.exe <–the second letter could be anything

c:\windows\system32\atlus.exe

Step#7:

I now need you to delete the following files:

C:\Documents and Settings\Vicki\Application Data\aadi.exe

C:\WINDOWS\System32\l?ass.exe <–the second letter could be anything

c:\windows\system32\atlus.exe

C:\WINDOWS\tkkww.dll

C:\WINDOWS\sdktb32.dll <– may not be there

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Uupo] C:\Documents and Settings\Vicki\Application Data\aadi.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Mntlrh] C:\WINDOWS\System32\l?ass.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

Step#8:

Then close all programs and windows and run the new version(if possible) of Hijackthis. Put a checkmark next to each of these entries and click 'fix checked' button when ready (some may be gone after uninstalling some programs):

Step#9:

In the next step we are going to remove a service that gets installed by this malware.

1. Open Registrar Lite and run it.

2. Copy and paste the bold text below into the address bar of Registrar Lite:(this is making a Registry backup for safety in case of error)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\

Go to File> Export and and save as (in the C:\Program Files\Registrar Lite (Reglite) folder):

1.) Winkey.reg (Save as type: regedit4 .reg type)
2.) Winkey.hiv (Save as type: Scroll to select-regetd32/WinAPI *hiv *dat files)

3. Copy and paste the bold text below into the address bar of Reglite:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó

3. Click Go

4. If O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó exists it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

5. Copy and Paste the bold text below into the address bar of Registrar Lite:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó

6. Click Go

7. If LEGACY_O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó
exists then right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

8. If you have trouble deleting a key. Then click once on the key name to highlight it and on the top menu choose Security, then Edit Permissions. Then make sure you are an Administrator and give yourself Full Control of that key. Then click on everyone and put a checkmark in "full control". Then press apply and ok and attempt to delete the key again.

9. If you have had to change the permissions on the keys in Registrar Lite then they will have to be returned to the way they were . To do this please navigate to C:\ProgramFiles\Registrar Lite (Reglite) and double-click on Winkey.reg. It will ask if you want to merge this file with the registry, say Yes. Then double-click on Winkey.hiv and merge this file with the Registry. You have now returned the permissions to the way they were.

Step#10:

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.

Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so. Post the log file in your next reply

Step#11:

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Name the file as fix.reg
Change the Save as Type to All Files
and Save it on the desktop

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HSA]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SE]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SW]

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process.

Step#12:

1.Reboot your computer back to normal mode and Scan again with HijackThis. We still have a few steps to complete but a log file at this time would be helpful.

2. Post both your log from About Buster and your HijackThis log here in this thread with any questions or problems that you have run into. There are still some steps that are necessary to clear out all of the malware. There will be necessary files that it has deleted that will need to be replaced.

Good Luck!
Hi, am replying from another computer now. Got to step 10 and when trying to start 'aboutbuster' clicked OK then a message came up saying the database is either corrupted or missing. Please download a new one.
Sorry for the delay. OK so I want to understand what happened. The error message indicated that the About Buster data base was corrupt? or was it your Windows System files that it indicated are corrupt? Please let me know which it is. Have you left the computer alone to prevent any more problems, or did your problems force you to use another computer?

This infection has a habit of deleting some vital system files which may be causing your current problem. In the next step I will have you replace the deleted files.

If it is the About Buster database that the error indicated was corrupt, can you use this second computer to download About Buster again to a CD and take it to your computer to use from the CD? If so, then you can try that. If not then skip the About Buster scan and follow the rest of the instructions until you post the new HijackThis log file.
Hi hanabee Thank-you for following my instructions, that will prevent the infection from reinstalling from the file it has on your computer. Are you able to download About Buster again from this computer you are using to a CD and then install it to yours? If so then you may be able to run About Buster. Please try it and if unsuccessful please continue with the rest of the steps, posting your HijackThis log here once you have completed these steps. You also could try keeping your computer off the internet by saving the new HijackThis log to a CD and then using this computer you are on, to post it to this thread. If About Buster continues to be a problem, there is another program that will work in its place that I will give you instructions for once I see the new HijackThis log. Good Luck!

Hello hanabee,

It appears that there is still some infection left so I am going to use HijackThis to remove some of the infection and then may have ro ask you to repeat the previous steps.

I also note that you are still using the old version of HijackThis which does not show many things that are shown in the new one that help clear this infection. If you are able to download it on the other PC it would help with cleaning your computer. Yours is also in a Temp folder where the backups it makes while fixing may be lost. They could be vital to restoring your system.

Step#1:

If you are able please download it again and make a specific folder for it on your hard drive and install it there. The instructions are:

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' and name the folder 'Hijack This'.

2. Download Hijackthis to the new folder from this website: http://www.downloads.subratam.org/hijackthis.zip

3. Double Click on 'HijackThis.zip' to extract and install HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

Step#2:

The following programs are malware

1. Please reboot your computer into safe mode by tapping F8 while the computer is starting up.

2. In Safe Mode Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs and uninstall each of the following:

Windows AdTools
Web_Rebates
ISTsvc

If you are able to use the updated version of HijackThis to remove the following entries then that would be good. However, if you have to use the current version please move it to its own folder before doing the following steps:

1. While in safe mode please Scan again with HijackThis (ALL WINDOWS CLOSED EXCEPT HJT)

2. In safe mode Put a check mark beside each of the following entries in the HJT window if they are still there:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\tkkww.dll/sp.html#28129

3. Click 'fix checked

4. REBOOT to finish removing the entries back into SAFE MODE by tapping F8 repeatedly while booting up

5. In Safe Mode DELETE the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msan32.exe
C:\Program Files\Windows AdTools\WinAdTools.exe
C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates\WebRebates0.exe"
c:\temp\salm.exe
C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\atlus.exe

6. In Safe Mode DELETE the following folders:

C:\Program Files\Windows AdTools\
C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates\
C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\

6. REBOOT into normal mode

Step#3:

1. Please run Service Filter again
2. Click on ServiceFilter.vbs
3. Post the text file called POST_THIS to this thread again

Step#4:

1. please SCAN again with HJT and

2. POST a new log file here in this thread using 'Add Reply' to see what is left to clean.

Good Luck!
hi, thanks for your help again. most of the files you mentioned were not there to delete. Here is the service filter followed by new log.
