Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Reboot and post a new HiJackThis log.
Thanks Siggyx.

Since I did not know how long I might have to wait for a response, here is what I did in the interim:

1) ran Spy Sweeper [a computer store technician suggestion] - it took TWO DAYS and still did not go through all the files, so I stopped it as no new spyware and traces had shown up [actually, ONE spyware and 8 traces did on the second day]. A total of 37 Spyware and 603 traces were found. Then I had SS remove these files - this took 5 hours.

2) In the meantime, I went to Staples located nearby and spoke to a technician there. He gave me the Windows Service Pack 2 CD - it would not download from the site and I had ordered it a month ago but it has not yet arrived. I haven't done anything with it yet as I know this needs to be cleaned out first. He also suggested checking msconfig startup, which I have done, unchecking everything, but I have since returned it to its original form, as I don't think this is the problem in making it freeze up continually. Windows is also not shutting down properly and I have to shut off by the button.

3) After I finished the SS spyware/traces removal in #1, I was able to return to this forum and found that you had responded. Here is what I have done today:

a) ran CW shredder - result 'completely clean'
b) ran Spybot - I had this program prior to this problem and think the problem came after I downloaded an update for it about 10 days ago. I then uninstalled it. This new download looks slightly different from the one I had. It identified several - one that had always turned up in the scan and which I did not delete was DSO Exploit - should I delete this? I then immunized with SpyBot and also downloaded Spyware Blaster as it advised.
c) Ad Aware. I had downloaded prior to HJT scan and had started to scan but it was very slow, so stopped it. It is still very slow - i.e. gets to a certain point after about 15 minutes and almost freezes. I did not continue it.
d) I ran AntiVir, which I have been using for several months - it located and deleted 4 Trojan horses, which I have been receiving messages about for a few weeks and deleting every day. These are HideRun A6/A7/A8 and dldr.dyfuca.bh.1.
e) tried to run Housecall, but in 50 minutes it had gone through 375 files.

After I went back to msconfig startup and rechecked everything, I get a message window again that I have been getting for a few weeks: "16-bit Windows Subsystem: Windows\System 32\Autoexec.NT - The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose close to terminate this application (close) (ignore)"

f) rescanned using Hijack This - here is the new log. I look forward to hearing from you. Kate

Thanks Siggyx.

I did the safe mode, scanned, checked and Fixed as advised. Adaware SE does not proceed past a certain point. I have copied the log of what it found:

I then rebooted and ran HJT and got the SAME list back. I then FIXED the list as you advised to do in safe mode. . .and it worked to remove them, though SpySweeper came on with a couple of notes about the sympatico.msn.ca as IE.

Windows is not shutting down properly - i.e. on its own. I have to use the button.

I then did a new HJT scan and here is the new log. What is next? Thanks, Kate

Siggyx,

Here is the new scan. I removed the two lines. I also added back in sympatico.msn as my IE home page so that line is back on - otherwise IE just came up as about:blank.

It seems to be running well now - shuts down on its own and does not freeze up. I increased the cookie level on Internet Options as well - in fact had to lower it a notch to log on now! I also ran the defrag - not significant - only 9% - but caught up on that now too. The autoexec.NT message is not coming up any more.

If this looks okay, I will catch up on some work and then install the Windows Service Pack 2 . After hearing stories about potential problems, I want to be sure to have things caught up first!

Thanks so much, Kate
