Okay - problem:

Popup ads, browser home page resets to some search page (and won't reset to usual homepage),

3 new programs are listed in "ADD/REMOVE progams" list, yet I cannot find them using Windows Explorer or a file search.

1. Home Shopping Advisor
2. Shopping Wizard
3. Search Extender

(when I try to remove them it says can't connect to the URL lhttp://looking-for.cc/uninstall . I added this webstie url to blocked sites under Security Settings in Internet Options and the search page no longer pops up, however the browser resets to the default "about:blank".

What I've done:

- antivirus scan (Norton) = nuthin
Spydoctor finds and removes HKLM Software, but it reaapears usually after connecting to the internet or logging off and back on.

Downloaded HijackThis and ran a scan (copied below)
Ran off instructions and TRIED to follow them, but I'm not a computer whiz, so was afraid to 'fix' too much.

Below is results of first scan (before I 'fixed' anything)

Below that is the result of the second scan (after a few 'fixes', a reboot, reinstall of spydoc)

FIRST SCAN:

Please, please take a look and tell me what it is I need to do to get rid of this annoying frustration. And thank you in advance. :P

I just wanted to add that Spyware Doctor scans upon startup and lists 3 items - all CSWsearchX files. I remove them and they reappear upon startup again.

Could someone please advise?

The first thing I need you to do is download the file from here:

Getservice.zip

Extract the file to the c:\ drive. Then navigate to the c:\getservices and double-click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up. Please paste the contents of that notepad as a reply to this post.

As it has been some days since your hijackthis log - could you also post a new hijackthis log too.

You also have Spyware Doctor running and that might interfer with the fix - so please disable that from running.

With this infection which is hooked well into the system it is often best if the number of reboots of the machine are kept to urgent boots only, so please try to leave your machine on and not reboot if you are able. These files and services can rename themselfs and we need to minimise the chance of that happening while we do the fix.

OK this is long and involved - It will take me four or five posts - as I will be posting copies of pictures that I copied when I infected this on myself a few weeks ago.
With these pictures will be file names - THAT WILL NOT BE THE SAME AS YOURS - they are provided as examples only. Please read the text for the filenames that you will need to find and delete etc.
You may want to print out these directions as the Internet will not be available. Please continue with the next step if you run into a problem with the current one. Just be sure to let us know what the problem was when you reply.

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Please download About:Buster from here: http://tools.zerosrealm.com/AboutBuster.zip. Once it is downloaded extract it to
c:\aboutbuster. We will use that program later in this process.

Please download Reg Lite from here:
http://www.resplendence.com/download/reglite.exe
Once it is downloaded double click to install. We will use that program later in this process.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode and follow these steps:

Step 1:

Click on start, then control panel, then administrative programs, then services. Look for a service called Network Security Service (NSS). Double click on the that service and click stop and then set the startup to disabled. Also write down the name and path of the file listed in the Path to executable field. This filename must be deleted below.

[external image: Posted Image]

=====================================
Step 2:

Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the follow processes if they exist:

winzr32.exe
twrfb.dl
spydoctor.exe
mfcew32.dll
sysvy.exe
appln32.exe

[external image: Posted Image]

Step 3:
I now need you to delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\winzr32.exe
The file from the services above.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\twrfb.dl
C:\WINDOWS\mfcew32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysvy.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\appln32.exe

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

[external image: Posted Image]
Step 4:
Then close all programs and windows and run hijackthis. Put a checkmark next to each of these entries and press the fix button when ready:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\twrfb.dll/sp.html#29126

Optional
O16 - DPF: {CA034DCC-A580-4333-B52F-15F98C42E04C} (Downloader Class) - http://www.stopzilla.com/_download/Auto_Installer/dwnldr.cab

[external image: Posted Image]
Step 5:

In the next step we are going to remove a service that gets installed by this malware.

start reglite.

Navigate to: (You can use copy and paste from this into the address bar.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\O?'ZrtñåȲ$Ó

If O?'ZrtñåȲ$Ó exists , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

[external image: Posted Image]

Now navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_O?'ZrtñåȲ$Ó

If LEGACY_O?'ZrtñåȲ$Ó exists then right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

If you have trouble deleting a key. Then click once on the key name to highlight it and click on the Permission menu option under Security or Edit. Then Uncheck "Allow inheritible permissions" and press copy. Then click on everyone and put a checkmark in "full control". Then press apply and ok and attempt to delete the key again.

If it does not find that second key - it will drop you one stage below - and you should be able to see something similar to the next two pictures.

A funny named key :-

[external image: Posted Image]

With a sub key with our bad service name in - so deleted that key and sub key.

[external image: Posted Image]
Step 6:

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.

Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.

Now you can reboot to normal mode - and do a new Hijackthis log and post that with the about:buster log for me to see.
OK - my suggestion is so that you can follow all of that to copy all the text to a wordpad file on your computer - along with the pictures if you think they will help you. Then once you boot to safe mode - DO NOT OPEN INTERNET EXPLORER OR GO TO THE INTERNET WITH ANY OTHER METHOD - until you have completed the last of those tasks.
Okay I am printing out instructions (thank you, and *gulp*) but I have one question. In regards to the last two pictures (the two after the text "If it does not find that second key - it will drop you one stage below - and you should be able to see something similar to the next two pictures") - Between those 2 pictures is typed: "With a sub key with our bad service name in - so deleted that key and sub key" = my question is - am I supposed to also delete the file with the funny name in either of those windows after being dropped to the next stage? This is the only part I find confusing. I will not be attempting this until tomorrow, but wish me luck OKAY EDITED: I went back and rethunk it (LOL) - you mean (I think) to delete the key AND the subkey once the subkey is found with the weird filename in it. Right?
In the second of those pics you can see the 'service' name - (those funny charactors etc ) So if (1) you dont get taken straight to the right key and if (2) you find a funny named key in the left pane, it will have a sub key (with the 0000) which should contain this bad service. So delete that one. Mostly the legacy key is found straight away from the copy/paste to the address bar - so you will not need to look - I was lucky (or not) when doing my self infection for this 'funny' to show. It is unlikely to show for you - but best prepaired.
Wow.

First here are the two logs requested:

Attempted Clean Of Temp folder.
Pages Reset… Done!
**************************

I was brave. . . very brave. I will make a second post from work (on my way there now) about problems I had (not too many) or things that 'threw' me until I gritted my teeth and sallied forth. I hope my experience will empower others. And, I hope I hope I hope this computer is, indeed, clean.
:wavey:
First. . . thank you Chris for your help. Omigosh, your instructions were super. In an attempt to help other novices or semi-novices (I put myself in this group  ) I will denote what problems, head-scratchers and things that 'threw' me.

Note I printed off the instructions, but also saved them in a txt file on my desktop so that I could open it and "cut and paste" in the reglite part of the instructions - very important as that string cannot be duplicated by typing it in.
************

I made sure I enabled 'hidden files' viewing - another important step - I thought I already had this enabled, but found out I did not.
************

Downloaded About:Buster and Reg Lite and installed both (no problems) then I rebooted in Safe Mode by running msconfig.
************

Now the fun began. STEP 1 - I found NSS (Network Security Services) and found that "stop" was already on - I then disabled it in the startup, and wrote down the name and path of the file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\winzr32.exe /s
************

STEP 2 (feeling pretty smug now) Entered Task Manager PROCESSES and looked for the list of files to "End" - ack - none of them were listed. . . nope, not a one. (feeling less smug now).
**************

STEP 3 (delete the following files).

C:\WINDOWS\system32\winzr32.exe (found and deleted)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\winzr 32.exe /s
(the one detected in step 1 above) NOT FOUND !! ACK . . . hmm, she says to herself, hopefully it's the first one I deleted - sigh.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\twfrb.dl (found and deleted)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcew32.dll (NOT FOUND!!)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysvy.exe (found and deleted)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\appln32.exe (found and deleted)

Now, not finding those files kinda threw me, but I gritted my teeth and went on.
***************

STEP 4 Run Hijack This

The "R1" files and the "R0 file listed in my instructions to be checked (the ones that read Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar - or Page - Default Page, etc. were there, but had a different system 32 file associated with them - however the html#29126 was there on each . So I thought . . . hmmm, this nasty infection changes and reinfects with every boot (and I DID reboot to Safe Mode) so it would make sense that those dll files' names would be changed. So, crossing my fingers, I checked them for HijackThis to fix.

Also - the 02-BHO (no name) item had sdkly.dll instead of the mfcew32.dll as shown in the instructions. Scary, but feeling totally committed at this point, I checked it to be fixed. . . and exited Hijack This.
*************

STEP 5 Reg Lite

Because I had copied this part to a desktop txt file, I was able to copy and paste the first HKEY and navigate right to it. DELETED it no problem.

The second one was trickier. . . cut and pasted the second HKEY and found the LEGACY_ O key but it did not have all those funny symbols and wotnot - it had something like this after the O? 00IE*2019*017DRT*00F1*00E5*00C8*00B2$ – (and a few more which I did not write down).

In a subfolder of this, I found the funny-looking 'key' - but it was still not exactly the same - but by holding the mouse over it, it showed it as it truly was matching what was in the instructions . .

I then selected delete for the whole folder in the main menu. >>>> "Access Denied" it said. Hmmm. . . Following Chris' instructions I went into "Security" and "permissions" — where I did NOT find the "Allow inheritible permissions" line to be unchecked. However, by looking around this Permissions file - I managed to designate "EVERYONE" with permission to "delete" that particular file. Don't ask me exactly how, but I was able then to delete the thing.
************

The rest of the instructions were then followed.

I then rebooted in Normal Mode - and ran new HijackThis log.

Before I connected to the internet (so I could post the Hijack log and the AboutBuster log), I ran a full computer scan with SpyDoctor. The verdict? "Clean" - wow.

I checked the add/remove programs through the Control Panel and the 3 programs that had been listed previously HomeSearch, etc (see my first post) were GONE! Yay!

I set Spydoctor to be "On Guard" and also enabled my adblocker program (12 Ghosts) and connected. . . OMIGOD no popups, the home page is set for Google not about:blank and I still have my fingers crossed.

Thank you Thank you Thank you TomCoyote and ChrisRLG
