Sorry - though I would and I did - had visitors when I got home from work - so did get delayed.

OK - your current log has no malware - that is to say nothing that is know to cause problems.

You may still have some items that you dont wish to have but that is a seperate issue which we can now deal with.

First of those lines in your log you need to decide which of those programs you do not wish to have.

Then first try to uninstall them from add/remove programs. Or check the start menu for the links to that program to see if they provided an uninstall link instead.

If that fails -post a list of the programs you no longer wish to have and I will give some advise as to how to use hijackthis to remove them.

Of those you have currently

BearShare is a p2p program that has a BAD free version and a OK pay for version.
If the free I would recommend that it is removed.
This is a link we use to let people know of good (and bad) p2p programs.

P2P NETWORKING is provide with some p2p programs and is a waste of space and known tom cause slowdowns - I would recommend that goes too.

Most of the others are subjective - you may use the feature they provide and wish to keep - equally they may be someting you never use and are taking up RAM for no reason. An example of that is Adaptec DirectCD, it is use to drag and drop writing to CDrw - if you only ever use the full cd burn software the DirectCD program is not required.

If you have doubts about a particular program check this list at CastleCops
http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html
Copy the file name into the box and it will search the database and tell you what it knows with a link to more info.

You can also ask me to find out - although I will mostly use google to do so.

Post back with what you wish to remove that you are unable to do yourself.
Chris - an my computer is running wonderfully as well. I would like to remove Bear Share and P2P Networking but am not sure how. They don't appear in my add/remove programs list. My son does use all that Adaptec CD stuff, so that needs to stay, but I've told him no more P2P programs since they started prosecuting people for downloading, so any of that can go - as long as it doesn't erase his existing music files (I assume that's what P2P means). So: 1.How do I remove Bearshare and P2P Networking? 2. Can you recommend a music sharing program that I can allow my son to use that is also legal? I don't mind paying for it. 3. Shall I delete the protocol files? I'm still not sure what they are. You've done a terrific job, thanks so much. Kelly.

1.How do I remove Bearshare and P2P Networking?

Use hijackthis - all other programs cloased - mark these and 'fix checked'.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BearShare] C:\PROGRAM FILES\BEARSHARE\BEARSHARE.EXE /pause
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P NETWORKING] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\P2P NETWORKING\P2P NETWORKING.EXE /AUTOSTART

Reboot - and delete these folders if they still exist

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\P2P NETWORKING\
C:\PROGRAM FILES\BEARSHARE\

2. Can you recommend a music sharing program that I can allow my son to use that is also legal? I don't mind paying for it.

Sorry its the best I can do - I dont use any myself.
Itunes I see in some logs - it is not removed by us - and I believe you pay per download.

3. Shall I delete the protocol files? I'm still not sure what they are.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LDM] C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\LogitechDesktopMessenger.exe
Plus all the 018's

Do you use 'desktop manager' - if not add all those lines to the hijackthis fix above. As it is not malware I will not recommend that the folder gets deleted.
Chris - did it, I'm fixed and my computer is clicking along better than ever. I was planning to check into iTunes for my kids, so will do so. Thanks so much to you and everyone at this forum. The work you do is invaluable. I've made a donation, you're definitely worth it and more! Kelly.
Your welcome.
