Hi all,
Have run Adaware, Spybot S+D, CWSShredder, NAV, and deleted all temp files for all users. And did this in safe mode. Also disabled system restore.
Coolwwwsearch has shown back up in Spybot S+D, along with a few other nasties.
Browser keeps getting hijacked to adserver.sharewareonline.com
along with popups and shortcuts being placed on the desktop etc.
Here is a copy of the hijackthis log file. Any help would be appreciated.

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

Let's get rid of that Winsock hijack first.

To do that, do these steps:

1. Download and run: LSPfix.exe
2. Check 'I know what I'm doing'.
3. Select all instances of 'calsp.dll'.
4. Click the right-pointing arrow.
5. Click 'Finished'.
6. Restart your computer. Verify your Internet connection is working.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Scan".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,CustomizeSearch = res://C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll/sa

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
Thanks so much Micah_6:8
I followed all your instructions and had a few things that didnt show up as noted below.
When i fired up HJT to delete the enties you listed,
Hijack this didnt display: R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

Also after choosing to display hidden files and folders and to display protected operating system files, i still was not able to find the toolbar or vbouncer folders.
I also did a search for idmbipm.exe and came up empty.

Sometimes the malware seems to disappear like "magic". If you can't find it, and it's not in the log, it can't be a serious threat.

You've got one more thing to deal with before you're done.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Scan".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Yahoo Messenger] NETSTATT.EXE

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete:

netstatt.exe <— file
(use windows explorer to find)

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
Ok the only Netstatt file i found was NETSTATT.EXE-271D0475.pf a windows prefetch file. I did delete it and here is the new HJT log.

Things certainly seem better. Now if i can only get my friends sister to stop clicking on everything that pops up they would be all set.
I installed SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and Firefox to see if we can limit the damage this girl does but i think she may be a lost cause. I had set her up with limited user rights and she found out the admin password and gave her and her sister both admin rights. Any recommendations on protecting them when using AIM or Yahoo IM's? Id like to think that Spywareguard and Blaster along with maybe IE-Spyad may prevent or limit the likeliness of them filling their system up with spyware etc. again but unless the user uses some common sense then i guess all bets are off. Any other recommendations for bullet proofing this PC would be appreciated.

The log looks good now.

Other than keeping the "offending" people totally off the machine, I think you've done about all you can do.

If you run into more problesm, please return here. Helping is what we are here for.

GOD bless you and yours.

M68 :)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?" here:

http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

Download IE-Spyad here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck.qualys.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

Thanks again for all the help M68. Ill be sendig my donation to TC via paypal. Do you know if there are any issues with IE-Spyad and SpywareBlaster working together?
