Thanks Piatan, good to hear from you. Since posting, I've been reading posts and replies on this forum. This has led me to go ahead and install and run Spybot and Ad-aware. These were configured according to dgosling's "Instructions for-Spybot S & D and Ad-aware". These are posted below along with a current Hijack log.

Thanks for your help and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Hello chipmunk

I will not require any additional Ad-Aware, or Spybot S&D logs, unless requested.

You did not say with what you would like assistance in removing from your PC. Please be specific, so we are better able to help. Almost everything listed below appears to be things which may have been intentionally downloaded. I would suggest that you have a look in Add/Remove Programs and Uninstall/Remove any Program you do not want. If you are not positive about something, just leave it.

I will need your assistance with some of these entries. They apear to be Programs that you intentionally downloaded, but are not known to me and information on Google is scant, or non existant. If you see something you want to keep, use your best judgment and do so.

Please print out these instructions so you can read them while you clean your system. A printout also makes a good check list for Hijack This, to avoid making errors.

Please run Hijack This again and place check marks next to the following entries.

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {ACB1E670-3217-45C4-A021-6B829A8A27CB} - (no file)

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightLAN 01] "C:\Program Files\Verizon Online\VisualIPInsight\IPClient.exe" -l
(The 04 above is spyware that constantly calls home and earned an X rating.)

If you don't mind, could you enlighten me concerning the F3 DITTOWIN entry, what it is etc.

Unless you know these and are comfortable keeping them, have HJT fix them and if you do, they should first be Uninstalled in Add/Remove Programs,if there.

F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\DITTOWIN\DITTO.EXE

O4 - Startup: EditPlus 2.lnk = C:\Program Files\EditPlus 2\editplus.exe

O4 - Startup: FT for DOS.pif = C:\FT\ftmenu.exe

O4 - Startup: PAF 5.lnk = C:\Program Files\FamilySearch\Paf5\pstart.exe

O4 - Startup: Shortcut to Quattro Pro.pif = C:\QUATTRO\Q.EXE

O4 - Global Startup: e-Sword.lnk = ?

The following entries are optional, or known resource hogs. If you have noticed an overall slowdown in your computer, consider shutting down some of these. Please read the description following each and check mark for "fixing" (or follow instructions for disabling) according to your needs.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe -osboot

For TkBellExe: This is unnecessary to run at Startup, but it will need to be turned off in the program as well as fixing it here,or it will simply put itself back here… By the way the Program is Real Player.
See the following url for more information on TkBell,to help you make an informed decision.
http://www.mikescomputerinfo.com/TkBellExe.htm

Close all other windows and browsers, then click on "Fix Checked.
Then please REBOOT.

Please reboot into safe mode by tapping on F8 frequently, during Bootup.

Make sure your settings allow you to view "Hidden files". Open up any explorer windows and click on "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" and be sure to check off "Show Hidden Files and Folders".

Delete the following File(s)/Folder(s) in DARK while in Safe Mode.(Please note that these are optional, and if you choose to fix these, they should first be Uninstalled in Add/Remove Programs,if there.)

C:\Program Files\EditPlus 2

C:\Program Files\FamilySearch

C:\FT

C:\DITTOWIN

C:\QUATTRO\Q.EXE

Reboot into normal mode, enable hidden files and post a fresh Hijack This log in this thread to see if anything additional needs to be done.
Piatan,

I appreciate your assistance and suggestions. First, let me say that I consider this exercise "Preventive Maintenance" rather than "System Repair". It is my hope that the former will at least minimize, if not avoid, the latter.

Presently, I am not aware of any damage to my system such as loss of control, hijacked browser, or poor performance. I try to avoid IE except where required by MS Update or Verizon, my DSL provider. This system is old but even at 600mhz the action is crisp and pages are loaded mostly in 1-3 secs which is ok for me.

My concern is that, as with any internet machine, it is likely that this system has been compromised in any number of ways. I hope to identify these "violations", remove them, and take steps to prevent reoccurrences wherever possible.

Regarding your suggestions and questions:

Before running HJT I googled the first two (toolbar) entries. They appear to be associated with the new Mozilla Firefox browser which I recently installed for testing and did not "FIX".

Also, I removed the Visual Insight folder. IPClient.exe is a program furnished by Verizon's ISP for the purpose of collecting user information.

The DITTOWIN entry is a remnant left after removing an old IOMEGA DOS tape backup program. It was "FIXed".

The five Startup items are programs in the startup folder which are constantly active and available for use. What is the meaning of these entries? I'm curious that there are a number of additional programs in the startup folder which are not listed. I also wonder what is the difference between "STARTUP" and "GLOBAL STARTUP" ENTRIES. These entries were not "FIXed"..

For the TkBellExe entry, I followed your suggestion and went to mikescomputerinfo.com. His info was very helpful. I then went to RealOne Player> tools>preferences>automatic services and unchecked all (4) functions RP would otherwise run in background if left checked. This entry was "FIXed".

Finally, I rebooted into normal mode as I did not wish to remove the programs listed for the reasons mentioned above.

I look forward to hearing from you again soon..

Then please REBOOT.

With that done your HJT log seems to be clear of any parasites.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?
