You have a "Stopguard" infection. Please do not reboot until told to do so. Each reboot can make the infection harder to remove.

If you have rebooted since you posted the log, DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS FIX. Instead post another log file.

Download Killbox.zip

Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the 'Paste Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste this entry:

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\APS\LOCAL SETTINGS\Temp\tnofagv.dat

Don't click any of the buttons though, instead please click on the Action menu and choose "Delete on Reboot". In the window that opens up, click on the File menu and choose "Add File". The file should show up in the window. Then repeat the process, this time adding:

C:\Windows\java\Packages\netap.exe

If that's successful you should have the two files listed. Then repeat so that these files appear in the list as well:

C:\Windows\Tasks\drvdll.exe
C:\Windows\Tasks\olekey.exe
C:\Windows\javas.exe
C:\Windows\Config\netkb.exe
C:\Windows\Fonts\accvss.exe
C:\Windows\addins\netcr.exe
C:\Windows\msagent\chars\regcab.exe
C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\tapifax.exe
C:\Windows\Fonts\playwms.exe
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\vgafont.exe
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\APS\LOCAL SETTINGS\Temp\bkinst.exe
C:\Windows\java\Packages\ssvr.exe

When they are all there (and double check!), in the same window choose the Action menu and select "Process and Reboot". You'll be prompted to reboot, do so.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Scan".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Delete all files in this folder:

c:\documents and settings\owner\local settings\temp <— FOLDER

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)

There are other things to remove, but "Stopguard" is at the top of the list.
Hi Little Eagle…

I followed all of your directions and also found a file of similar nature which I also followed the same process for. This is the final post after the struggle:

The following have randomly named file names, and as such are normally malware.
UNLESS you know what they are, and they are from a safe source, follow their process tree.
Right click on the file and go to Properties. Then go to the Version tab to see what company name it's from:
If it's from some name you never heard of or if it's blank, please check for removal also.

Thanks for all of your help, Little Eagle! It is running perfectly for the moment. However, I am having a problem on a WIN98 system. It is something called Sidesearch. I try to uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs and it gives everything on my computer the generic Windows icon (software and files) and I cannot access the control panel. Also, when I reboot it starts to set up WIN98 as if I am setting up the OS for the first time. I ran a scan on it and have posted the results below.

I am very new to this site and wasn't sure if I was supposed to use 'reply.' I know I cannot use 'new post' because I am a new member. If I am making any mistakes, do not hesitate to tell me. I do not want to annoy you. Thanks so much for your help.

For the other PC
Please read through the ideas and free software listed below that will help to keep your computer clean.
Some of these you may already have installed or may have done already.

Install a firewall.ZoneAlarm FREE

Ensure that an Antivirus is updated weekly and running. AVG antivirus from Grisoft is a very good FREE antivirus program.

Make sure you have the latest critical updates from windows update.

SpywareBlaster will prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.

IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 known 'bad' sites into your IE restricted zone so that they cannot install malware on your PC.

Google toolbar has a very good built in popup blocker with a nice search bar. To provide privacy, select disable advanced features when installing.

Check your system for latest virus definitions with an online virus scan every week or two.
TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan

Check your system for latest trojan definitions with an Online trojan scan also every week or two.

And also see this link for additional security information.
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Hello, once again, Little Eagle!

All went well with my last posting, so no need to post more. I have also joined the classroom so that I will hopefully be able to help others as you have been helping me.

In the meantime, I have run into a bit of trouble on another system. This didn't look right to me (as always) but some of it I was unfamiliar with and thought I had better post instead of making a mistake.

Here it is….
