Need Clean-up Help

Norton Anti-Virus scan picked up 17 infected files, but only deleted one. I am not having any major problems but wondered if it's advisable to clean up using HijackThis on a regular basis. (I run updated versions of Adaware, Spybot, and Norton on a weekly basis and use Google toolbar to prevent pop-ups. . .still seem to "collect" stuff)

ALSO: do you advise installing Windows XP2?

Here's the most recent logfile:

THANK YOU!
Hello,

You are quite likely "picking up stuff" because your permissions are set too low, and that allows dubious sites to place their activeX controls on your system. The article referenced in my signature below, "How did I get infected in the first place?" will explain what you need to know about your settings for activeX controls, etc.

As for SP2, that depends on whether or not your system meets the requirements for installing this Service Pack. I suggest you go to the Windows Update site (link below) and read everything available regarding the parameters for installing SP2. Also spend some time reading the recommendations for preparing for the installation, doing back-ups, etc. If everything checks out, then go ahead and install it.

Scan with HijackThis and place a check mark next to the following entries, then WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, select "Fix Checked."

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example:

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\

C:\Temp\

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select "delete all offline content."

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Reboot, scan with HijackThis and post a fresh log into this same thread.
Have one question, before I post the new Hijack log:

I searched for files and folders under C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Local Settings\Temp\ using my husband's name in place of username (assume that is what you meant) and came up with 2038 files. Am I really supposed to delete all those? I deleted a few I knew to be questionable but didn't want to touch the rest yet.

I did delete Temporary Internet Files and adjusted the cache to 172 MB.

Don't have the courage to delete the recycle bin until I hear back from you.

In the meantime–will get to work research XP 2.

(THIS SERVICE IS INVALUABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Hello,

Yes, please do delete all files and folders that are found in the Temp folders, to clarify:

Go to Start, Run, and type in "%temp%" (without the quotes). Delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder (use "Edit > Select All," press "Delete," click "Yes.")

Then, Empty your Temporary Internet Cache completely. Use "Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab" and click the "Delete File" button. When prompted place a check in: "Delete all offline content." then click OK.

Then, use Windows Explorer to clean out ALL the other Temp and Temporary Internet Files folders on your system (navigate to the folder, use "Edit > Select All," press "Delete," click "Yes"):

IF your system is set up with these folders in different locations, ensure that you remove the contents of the Temp and Temporary Internet Files on that partition also
Ex: D:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp

* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* Empty your "Recycle Bin."

Regarding SP2… do the research but do not attempt to install it until you are 100% malware free, per Microsoft's instructions. :)

Please print a copy of these instructions because you will be working in Safe Mode and/or with all windows closed except HijackThis.

It appears that something new has been added to this log… WebRebates. So, first boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key as your system restarts (or see instructions below if needed) and go to Add/Remove Programs. Search for and remove, if found, WebRebates and any other "search" and/or "toolbar" programs that may appear dubious. Reboot if directed to do so.

Please run HijackThis in Safe Mode….

Reboot into safe mode, this way:
Restart the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

Also, enable the ”Show Hidden Files and Folders” option:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Place a check mark next to the following items then, WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, select “fix checked.”

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WebRebates0] "C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates\WebRebates0.exe"

O8 - Extra context menu item: Web Rebates - file://C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates\Sy1150\Tp1150\scri1150a.htm

Now, search for, and delete the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates\

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Reboot into Normal Mode.

It appears from your log that you are running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure. This can be bad if they are malware, so we would like you to reenable those startup entries by doing the following:

Please click on start, then run, and type msconfig and then press enter. When the window opens click on the startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks in every entry. Then press ok until you are out of the program. If it asks to reboot, do not reboot.

Scan with HijackThis and post a fresh log into this same thread. Important: Do not reboot until your new log has been reviewed.
Sorry it took me so long to reply. I wanted enough uninterrupted time to ensure I followed the steps correctly. Here's the new logfile:

The pop-ups have been increasing; maybe this log will show the culprit.

I am not rebooting until I hear from you! ;)
A P.S. to the last reply and logfile posted: The pop-ups I'm getting have – -Microsoft Int as one source (?) and the SBC global icon on others. Don't know if this helps, but they pop up as soon as I get on Internet Explorer. Thanks.
Hello,

Your log still shows MSConfig running in auto mode. Anything you have disabled via MSConfig will not show up in this log. Please re-enable those disabled items before posting your next log or we have no way of evaluating what may not be showing in this system's running processes.

You need to apply this fix right away and then make certain that this system is protected with all current updates, that your antivirus software has all the latest definitions applied, and that you have a firewall that is enabled and protects against outgoing as well as incoming threats.

In addition, you need to get IE-SPYADS on this machine as quickly as possible…

Download IE-SPYAD here: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

It will place over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so that you don't accidentally visit innocent appearing sites that aren't really innocent.

This computer is showing a new infection each time you post a new log. This tells me that someone is surfing where they shouldn't be surfing, or downloading things that shouldn't be downloaded. It is pointless to keep cleaning up these new infections if nothing is done to change this pattern.

Please print a copy of these instructions because you will be working in Safe Mode and/or with all windows closed except HijackThis.

First, boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key as your system restarts (or see instructions below if needed) and go to Add/Remove Programs. Search for and remove, if found, Twain Tech, TwainTech, TwainTec, BullsEye Network, Bargain Buddy, and any other "search" and/or "toolbar" programs that may appear dubious.

O2 - BHO: LocalNRDObj Class - {00320615-B6C2-40A6-8F99-F1C52D674FAD} - C:\WINDOWS\localNRD.dll

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSN Messenger] MSNMessenger.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [07q7w.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\07q7w.exe /k

Now, search for, and delete if found, (some files may not be present after previous steps) the following:

Files:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\tpmchz.exe

C:\WINDOWS\System32\07q7w.exe

MSNMessenger.exe

C:\WINDOWS\System32\07q7w.exe

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example:

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\

C:\Temp\

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select "delete all offline content."

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Reboot into normal mode.

If you are not running version 1.3 of Spybot S & D, click here to download Spybot Search & Destroy v1.3 - install, update, reboot into Safe Mode, scan and fix all RED checked items it finds. Reboot into normal mode when done.

Perform a custom Ad-aware scan in Safe Mode……..

If you do not have the latest version of Ad-aware SE Personal, Build 1.05, click here to download Ad-Aware and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Then boot into Safe Mode, start the program, and click the gear wheel at the top and check these options to configure Ad-aware for a customized scan:

Under "General Settings" all available options should be selected.

Click the "Scanning" button.
Under "Drives, Folders and Files," select "Scan within Archives".
Click "Drives and folders to scan" and select your installed hard drives.
Under "Memory & Registry," select all options.

Click the "Advanced" button.
Under "Logfile detail level," select all options.

Click the "Defaults" button.
Under "Default IE Pages" set the "Default homepage" and "Default search page" to what you want them to be; otherwise, Ad-aware will reset them. Do not select the option to "Read current settings from system"… manually fill in the desired web address for each. (For instance, if you want Google as your search page, fill in www.google.com in the "Default search page" field).

Click the "Tweak" button.
Under "Scanning Engine," select the following:
"Unload recognized processes during scanning."
Under "Cleaning Engine," select the following:
"Always try to unload modules before deletion."
"During removal unload Explorer and IE if necessary."
"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."
Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.

Run the Ad-Aware scan, making sure that the mode selected is "Use custom scanning options."

When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next." The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?" Reboot into normal mode when finished.

Next, perform online virus scans using the links in my signature below. Allow the programs to delete all that they may find. Reboot after each scan.

Download a free trial of TrojanHunter here: http://www.misec.net/

Install the program, and then manually download and install the latest definitions. Then, perform a full system scan and allow the program to remove all that it may find. Reboot when finished.

Click here to go to the Windows Update site. Download and install ALL critical updates.

Reboot when finished.

Scan with HijackThis and post a fresh log into this same thread.
I am not sure what was disabled in MSConfig. When I first had problems in September, before I discovered this site, I paid a computer consultant to help me. He was the one who made changes to MSConfig and altered the startup. He set it up for selective startup; the 4 items below Selective Startup are checked, along with Use Original BOOT.INI When I click on the startup tab, every item is checked (now)–he'd left aim and msmsg and one other thing unchecked. I rechecked them per your previous instructions. After receiving your most recent post, I went back to MSConfig, clicked Normal Startup, then "ok", then "exit without restart". I won't reboot until I hear from you on this. ALSO: The computer is set up to alert me to critical updates, and I've dl everything except XP2. I also download updates for Spybot and Adaware on a weekly basis if necessary. I will download the IE-SPYAD as soon as I hear back from you. Know I'll need to reboot. . . Thanks for your patience. This is definitely a learning experience!
Hello, Good job! Now that you've made those changes in MSConfig, please post a fresh HijackThis log so we can see what it looks like. It's good that you've been keeping up with the critical updates, and with the updates for Spybot S&D and Ad-aware. The latter two should be checked for updates prior to each scan.
Great! I saw you were logged in during the last post and hoped you'd have a chance to answer.

Can I reboot?

Rebooted. . .began working through instructions given in your last (and lengthy) post. This may take me a few days, but I'll post a newer logfile than the one sent earlier this evening ASAP. Again, thanks! (Re: advice about surfing–2 teenage boys who love the gamesites DO NOT MAKE THINGS EASIER!) B)
Hello, You're welcome. :) Please install IE-SPYAD immediately, if you have not yet done so. After you have completed all my instructions, then post the fresh HijackThis log. In the meantime, this computer needs to stay off the internet except while you are cleaning it. If dubious sites continue to be visited before this system is completely clean and secure, then clean-up becomes an act of futility. In short, if you can't get to my instructions right away, and in the meantime your teenagers are surfing to dubious sites and picking up new malware, then my instructions are outdated before you ever use them. This can become an endless and pointless circle… a waste of everyone's time. The instructions that I have given you do not take that much time to execute. If you are not able, for whatever reason, to implement these instructions in a timely manner, and cannot keep this system off the internet until it's clean and secure, then please let me know and we will discontinue this project. It's your system and your decision to make.
Appreciate the matter-of-factness, and couldn't agree more. I posted a sign on the computer last night, after I'd spent several hours taking care of things, that read: "Computer is sick! Please do not use without permission. No surfing yet." And you're right, it doesn't take that long, it's just that I'm slowed by downloading (housecall, etc). We still have a dial-up internet – I have to run TrojanScan and TrojanHunter and install IE-SPYADS. Everything else is pretty much done. Should be posting that new logfile tomorrow. It's looking good!
:D
I've done it all, feel like I've slayed a few dragons. . .especially like the purging the virus scans accomplish. The computer's already set up to download critical updates automatically, and the only one waiting is XP2. I won't install that until you give the okay.

? Is it always smart to run HijackTHis in safe mode, and make corrections then too? And to run Adaware and Spybot in safe mode as well?

Previous instruction from computer comsultant: Run Adaware, Spybot, and Norton in succession while browsing safe sites on the internet, then reboot, then run Adaware again.

Here's the new logfile:
