What a great site!. Your help is sincerely appreciated.

I am using SpySubtract with Venus Spy Trap enabled. I started having trouble when I loaded "free" screensavers. Now I have New.net, MegaSearch, and TVMedia (no idea what TVMedia is) etc.

Hello,

Right now, you have HijackThis on your Desktop. It needs to be in its own folder so that any backup copies it makes will be kept with the program. Please right click on a blank space on your Desktop, select “New” then “Folder.” Name the new folder something like HJT or HijackThis. Now, you can just drag HijackThis into its new folder, using the left mouse button.

Next, please open Add/Remove Programs and uninstall New.Net or NewDotNet from there if listed. If it is not listed, go here to get the uninstaller http://www.newdotnet.com/#remove Carefully follow the written instructions.

Reboot computer when done.

Please print out the following instructions….

If you are not running version 1.3 of Spybot S & D, click here to download Spybot Search & Destroy v1.3 - install, update, scan in Safe Mode……

Reboot into safe mode, this way:
Restart the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

Fix all RED checked items it finds. Reboot to normal mode when done.

Perform a customized Ad-aware scan in Safe Mode……..

If you do not have the latest version of Ad-aware SE Personal, Build 1.05, click here to download Ad-Aware and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Then boot into Safe Mode, start the program, and click the gear wheel at the top and check these options to configure Ad-aware for a customized scan:

Under "General Settings" all available options should be selected.

Click the "Scanning" button.
Under "Drives, Folders and Files," select "Scan within Archives".
Click "Drives and folders to scan" and select your installed hard drives.
Under "Memory & Registry," select all options.

Click the "Advanced" button.
Under "Logfile detail level," select all options.

Click the "Defaults" button.
Under "Default IE Pages" set the "Default homepage" and "Default search page" to what you want them to be; otherwise, Ad-aware will reset them. Do not select the option to "Read current settings from system"… manually fill in the desired web address for each. (For instance, if you want Google as your search page, fill in www.google.com in the "Default search page" field).

Click the "Tweak" button.
Under "Scanning Engine," select the following:
"Unload recognized processes during scanning."
Under "Cleaning Engine," select the following:
"Always try to unload modules before deletion."
"During removal unload Explorer and IE if necessary."
"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."
Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.

Run the Ad-Aware scan, making sure that the mode selected is "Full Scan."

When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next." The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?" Reboot into normal mode when finished.

Next, perform online virus scans at both Trend Micro and Panda Software. Also, perform an online Trojan scan. (Use the links in my signature below). Allow the programs to delete all that they may find. Reboot after each scan.

Scan with HijackThis and post a fresh log into this same thread.
I don't need anything from Forbes or Gamespot. Not able to get virus definitions from Norton SystemWorks 2003 now. Their diagnostic told me to uninstall TrojanHunter. I assume that has something to do with with this process since I never used TrojanHunter.

Hello,

If you continue to be unable to download virus definitions for Norton System Works, then I suggest you get something else in the way of an AV program and get it installed right away. You cannot be on the internet without virus protection. You should also use a software firewall. The XP firewall protects against incoming threats only. You need something that will protect you in the event something gets on your system and tries to "phone home."

Kerio, Sygate and Zone Alarm are all good firewalls. AVG and avast! are good antivirus programs. All of these have downloadable free versions for home use.

If you have no need for Forbes, then uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs if it is found there, then fix the O4 entry with HijackThis and delete the associated folder as well. In any event, the associated O16 entry will need to be removed as it is bad.

Please print a copy of these instructions because you will be working in Safe Mode and/or with all windows closed except HijackThis.

Please run HijackThis in Safe Mode….

Reboot into safe mode, this way:
Restart the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

Also, enable the ”Show Hidden Files and Folders” option:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Place a check mark next to the following items then, WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, select “fix checked.”

Now, search for, and delete the following folders:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\

C:\Program Files\Forbes\

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example:

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\

C:\Temp\

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select "delete all offline content."

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Reboot into normal mode.

Check Spybot S&D and Ad-aware for updates, then scan with both programs, exactly as before, rebooting after each scan.

Proceed to the Windows Update site (see link below) download and install ALL critical updates.

Reboot when finished.

Scan with HijackThis and post a fresh log into this same thread.
The only thing I didn't delete was the Viewpoint Manager Media Player folder since I am trying to follow the directions exactly. BTW, I would recommend to people that they check each procedure as they go through it. When you know more than the novice it is easy to try to speed through things and consequently forget to reboot or do some other critical step.

Thanks again. I had no idea how involved this would be. Here is the fresh log:

Hello,

You're very welcome. :) Your log is clean now.

Go ahead and delete the Viewpoint Manager Media Player folder now as well. AOL installs this stuff without permission. Frankly, I think it's best to do a search for all things Viewpoint and remove them.

This would be a good time to flush out your system restore points and establish a new clean one….

Turn off System Restore.

Right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore.

Right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Un-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Set a new system restore point.

Download IE-SPYAD here: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

It will place over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so that you don't accidentally visit innocent appearing sites that aren't really innocent.

Scan often with Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-aware to remove malware before it gains a foothold on your computer. Install SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard to keep baddies from invading your system. (There are links in the article, "How did I get infected in the first place," below).

Make sure you keep your system updated by frequent visits to the Windows Update site (see link below). Always install ALL critical updates.

Please take a minute or two to read the short article, "How did I get infected in the first place?" (See link in my signature below). You will find good information on keeping your system clean in the future, as well as links for excellent free anti-spyware tools.
