Last week a scan with AVG turned up the Tojan horse Downloader.Small.11… in file C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\INS… When I look at 'Test Results' the Status says 'Still infected' yet when I perform a scan nothing turns up. The machine sometimes boots into safe mode and often the Active Desktop will dissappear (the screen changes to white, all the icons remain), and will ask if I wish to restore it. Should I be concerened? I posted a HijackThis Log on Oct. 4 prior to running the scan. No changes were made to this log since I've yet to receive a response. Is the virus still there?
I didn't see any malware in the last log. It would be a good idea to post a new one, just to be sure.

If you could post the entire name of the "infected" file, we have ways of removing them.

I did see one thing in the log:

If the "Spywaredoctor" on your machine is one referenced here:

Rogue Anti-Spyware Programs

You might want to consider uninstalling it.

Log looks good.

I'd nuke that file ("C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\INST.EXE
").

Looks like some sort of left-over install program. Definitely NOT system critical. :)
Just navigate to the file using windows explorer, on it, then choose "Delete". If it won't die quietly that way, let me know, and we'll kill it another way. :)
Unable to find this file using windows explorer and 'Find Files and Folders'.Remember the Virus hasn't shown up in sbsequent scans, perhaps the file was removed with the virus? Or maybe I'm doing something wrong.
Just glad we could help. :)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?" here:

http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

Download IE-Spyad here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck.qualys.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
