Welcome to the forum.

The key to fixing this hijacker is posting a fresh HJT log and not turning off or rebooting the computer until we are finished with procedure.

I need you to download and install these programs: (don't run or use them yet!!)

Download AboutBuster

Please download and install AD-Aware.
Check Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first.

Click here http://www.davehigham.zen.co.uk/downloads/cwsuninst.zip to download cwsuninst.zip.
Extract cwsuninst.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop.

Download the Hoster from here http://members.aol.com/toadbee/hoster.zip.

Download CW-Shredder

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

For anyone using Windows XP, 'Search' will not automatically show hidden files even if your folder options settings are set to do that. Do this so you can see hidden files and folders - click here http://www.davehigham.zen.co.uk/downloads/xphidden.zip to download xphidden.zip. Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double-click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

If you can do those for me including posting a fresh HJT log and I'll get back to you ASAP with the procedure to fix this hijacker. MrC
Hello tommyw,

I will be taking over for MrCharlie to help you out. This is one of the most severe infections to remove that we see these days. It runs from an added service and often a hidden dll. It will reinstall itself if Internet Explorer is opened and with each reboot it adds more infected files. Please do the following steps in order.:

Step#1

The first thing I need you to do is download the file from here:

Getservice.zip

Extract the file to the c:\ drive. Then navigate to the c:\getservices and double-click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up. Please paste the contents of that notepad as a reply to this post.

Step#2

This infection continues to reinstall itself through a hidden dll which we have to find and remove.

1. Please download DllCompare
( The Screenshot will show you how the program will look when it starts.)

2. Start the Program with its default settings and put a check mark in the include subdirectories. Click the Run Locate.com and wait until the scan says complete.

3. Click the Compare button to start the next process.

4. Files in the upper portion have been verified to "exist", Files in the bottom section were not able to be accessed. Very few files should be listed in the bottom section when the Compare scan is complete.

5. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower section to select them. Right-click on the file and use the Option Rescan screenshot.

6. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then it will be removed from the list (to reduce the number of identified files) screenshot

7. Click the Make a Log of what was found button, and post the log here in this thread using Add Reply to receive further instructions.

Step#3

Please post those two log files in this thread using Add Reply and I will give you further instructions.
Here are the logs you asked for. I thank you very much for takin the time to help! Thanks for the logs. The second log was inconclusive so I will have to give you another file to run and another log file to post. The first log has given us the name of the other service that was added by the infection and I will give you instructions to remove as soon as I get this information:

Following these steps will produce a file on your Desktop that appears to contain gibberish. Please post it all back here.

1. Please download the attached file to your Desktop.

2. Double-click on Appinit.bat (the file that you downloaded)

3. A file will be created on the desktop named windows.txt

4. Please open Windows.txt, then Edit > Select All then Edit > Copy and paste it into this thread using 'Add Reply'.

Good Luck

hmmm have no idea why that is happening can you attach it at the bottom of your post? In the jumbled mess that is in that file is there the name and location of a file? for example: can you pick out C:\Windows\System32\XXX.dll if so can you type the exact name and location of the file here - that is what I am looking for.
I've tried every thing I can think of to get this log into a post. I cant even copy and past it in to another note pad on my desktop? Even after I choose select all and copy all I can get is the first few letters and boxes to paste?regf that is all I can get it to paste. regf= HomeStead\CheckBox25.bmp and ImageFile = HomeStead\ComboButton.bmp are the only things I can pick out that seem to have a file name it them ?There is one part of the log that has alot of hexed characters in it, all I can make out is windows/..all the rest is hexed. Is there a place I can upload the file to so that you can see it? I'm lost here and very sorry that I'm having so much trouble getting you the info you need.
dgosling Maybe you can get something from this.I was finally able to find my notepad exc (has been gone since this all started) I opened the log in it and was able to post it but it took almost all the boxes out of it. Hello tommyw
That is the strangest looking windows.txt I have ever seen. The normal ones consist of only the gibberish after the text at the top of yours and if there is a hidden dll it is listed in the middle of the gibberish. In the middle of this fix I am going to ask you to check a location in the registry and see if there is anything there and then report back once this part of the fix is done. We will proceed to remove the added service and assume there is no hidden dll. I have never seen one with bitmap extensions in it so I am not sure what it looks like.

You may want to print out these directions as the Internet will not be available. You must totally disconnect from the internet as staying connected while fixing will prevent the fix from working. Also please keep Internet Explorer closed throughout as opening it will reinstall the infection. Read through all the instructions so that you can ask any questions now, before you disconnect from the Internet.

Please continue with the next step and if you run into any problems with the current one, just keep going through the list step by step. Just be sure to let us know what the problem was when you finally reply.

Step#1:

To ensure that all hidden files are showing please download and open the following zip file. Double-click on the file inside the zip and when it asks you if you would like to merge the file into your registry, please answer yes. This will make sure all files are visible on your computer.
http://www.davehigham.zen.co.uk/downloads/xphidden.zip

Step#2:

The following programs are malware and need to be uninstalled.
Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs and uninstall each of the following if they are there:

Step#3:

1. Please download About:Buster from here: http://tools.zerosrealm.com/AboutBuster.zip.

2. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster. Do NOT use it yet

Step#4:

Another program to download is Registrar Lite for use later: Please download Registrar Lite and install it to C:\Program Files\RegLite\ . This is a registry editor that is very easy to use.

Step#5:

Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix

1. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE

2. Click on start > control panel > administrative programs > services. Look for a service called < Workstation NetLogon Service >. Double click on that service and click stop and then set the startup to disabled. Also write down the name and path of the file listed in the Path to executable field. This filename must be deleted below.

Step#6:

Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the follow processes if they exist:

ippromon.exe>
< C:\WINDOWS\apith.exe >
system32\>
< C:\WINDOWS\ocmsn.log:hhlfn>
< C:\Documents and Settings\Tommy.ENGLISH\Application Data\rtra.exe
< C:\WINDOWS\System32\l?ass.exe >

Step#7:

I now need you to delete the following files:

ippromon.exe>
< C:\WINDOWS\apith.exe >
system32\>
< C:\Documents and Settings\Tommy.ENGLISH\Application Data\rtra.exe
< C:\WINDOWS\System32\l?ass.exe >
< C:\WINDOWS\ocmsn.log:hhlfn>
< C:\WINDOWS\system32\nlmnc.dll >
< C:\WINDOWS\system32\winnc32.dll >
sais.exe>

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

Step#8:

Then close all programs and windows and run hijackthis. Put a checkmark next to each of these entries and click 'fix checked' button when ready (some may be gone after uninstalling some programs):

Step#9:

Now I will ask you to check a location in the registry for an entry.

1. Open Registrar Lite and run it.

2. Copy and paste the bold text below into the address bar of Registrar Lite:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

3. In the right-hand pane you should see AppInit_DLLs. Double-click on AppInit_DLLs and a window will open. The bottom box is called Value. Please look in this box and see if there is anything there. If there is, please post the contents of that box back here when you connect to the internet again.

In the next step we are going to remove a service that gets installed by this malware.

1. Open Registrar Lite and run it.

2. Copy and paste the bold text below into the address bar of Registrar Lite:(this is making a Registry backup for safety in case of error)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó

Go to File> Export and and save as (in the C:\Program Files\Registrar Lite (Reglite) folder):

1.) Winkey.reg (Save as type: regedit4 .reg type)
2.) Winkey.hiv (Save as type: Scroll to select-regetd32/WinAPI *hiv *dat files)

3. Copy and paste the bold text below into the address bar of Reglite:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó

3. Click Go

4. If O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó exists it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

5. Copy and Paste the bold text below into the address bar of Registrar Lite:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó

6. Click Go

7. If LEGACY_O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó exists then right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

8. If you have trouble deleting a key. Then click once on the key name to highlight it and on the top menu choose Security, then Edit Permissions. Then make sure you are an Administrator and give yourself Full Control of that key. Then click on everyone and put a checkmark in "full control". Then press apply and ok and attempt to delete the key again.

9. If you have had to change the permissions on the keys in Registrar Lite then they will have to be returned to the way they were . To do this please navigate to C:\ProgramFiles\Registrar Lite (Reglite) and double-click on Winkey.reg. It will ask if you want to merge this file with the registry, say Yes. Then double-click on Winkey.hiv and merge this file with the Registry. You have now returned the permissions to the way they were.

Step#10:

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.

Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so. Post the log file in your next reply

When it has completed move on to step 11.

Step#11:

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Name the file as fix.reg
Change the Save as Type to All Files
and Save it on the desktop

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HSA]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SE]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SW]

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process.

Step#12:

1.Reboot your computer back to normal mode and Scan again with HijackThis. We still have a few steps to complete but a log file at this time would be helpful.

2. Post both your log from About Buster and your HijackThis log here in this thread with any questions or problems that you have run into. There are still some steps that are necessary to clear out all of the malware. There will be necessary files that it has deleted that will need to be replaced.

Good Luck!
Dgosling

Most everthing went well! Noone of the programs listed in step 1 were present. In steep 6 I couldnt find C:\windows\system32\>,C:windows\system32\nlmnc.dll, C:program files\180solutions\sais.exe, or C:\windows system32\ippromon.exe

In step9 I could'nt find applint_dlls. Every thing elese went fine!

Thank you very much for your help so far.
It appears we are in the home stretch
If you are having any difficulty with Notepad, please go to Merijn's Files and choose 'Windows Files' from the menu on the left hand side of the page. Then choose 'Notepad' from the list and download it to C:\Windows and C:\Windows\System32

Step#1:

Now we need to see if we need to restore some deleted files:
  • Please check for the following files using the Windows Search Engine:
  • control.exe
  • rundll32.exe
  • wmplayer.exe
  • msconfig.exe
  • notepad.exe
  • shell.dll
  • SDHelper.dll
  • If any are missing or not working properly then you can download new copies from Merijn's Files and following the instructions at that site to have them where they belong for your OS.
  • Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program. This will restore the original deleted Hosts file.
  • This infection often deletes some system files that need to be replaced. The most frequent one it deletes is shell.dll in Win2K or XP. In XP there are two copies of this file, one is Windows (WINNT) and one in Windows\System32. It does not delete the ones in Windows\System so it does not affect Win9x/ME. If you find it missing please copy the shell.dll from c:\windows\system32\dllcache into both \Windows (WINNT) and Windows\System32 .
  • The other system file which is most frequently deleted is control.exe. Please check to make sure that you have this file and if not Please check for the existence of this file by going to to Merijn's Files 9i(sdhelper) and examine where the file should be for your operating system. If the file is missing then download the appropriate file and place it in the proper place according to this information. The control.exe is more often deleted in Win9x/ME.
  • If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file. Go here: Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing you Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy). Then click Start > Run > regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll" and press the OK button
Step#2:

Run an online antivirus scan at:

Trend Micro Online AV

Reboot

Step#3:

1. Scan again with HijackThis

2. POST your log file to see if there is anything left to fix

I do have 1 question though concerning this:O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\PROGRA~1\SPYBOT~1\SDHelper.dll

I think I got confused during the repair of this file……I extracted it to C\windows\system32\dllcache first then to C\program files\spy bot s&d
Was this a mistake that I need to correct?

Other than that everything seemed to go fine. I want to say thank you again.
What you people do here is great! I'll be sending my donation soon.
Hello tommyW

Congratulations! The log is clean! To answer your question about SDHELPER.DLL you don't need to correct the error you will have a backup copy in dllcache that may come in handy later - that is all that you did. The folder dllcache is a Windows Protection folder where windows keeps copies of all main system files to be used in an emergency or when another program changes your Windows System files.

There are a few things you should do now to make sure you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.

2. Another cleanup that will help is to go to Start>Programs>Acccessories>System Tools> Disk Cleanup and put a check mark beside all the entries in the disk cleanup window that ask you what you want to clean. Clean all hard drives and all files. This will get rid of any malware that is hiding in the temporary folders.

3. Make sure that all Internet Temp files are gone, by checking the folders that the Temporary Internet Files and Temp files are stored in. To do so use Control Panel > Internet Options(or right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Properties). Click Delete Files on the General Tab - place a check in the Delete all offline content box, then 'Clear History' and then press OK

4. Empty your Recycle Bin

5. I think you may benefit from reading the article "How Did I Get Infected In The First Place" linked at the bottom of this post, for information on how to secure your PC from spyware/adware/malware.There are several small free programs mentioned there that help with securing your PC against this type of problem.

Good Luck!
