Thank for your help (ahead of time)

-Kevy-Jo
Hello kevy-jo

You have one of the most severe infections we see these days and it will take a few posts to get rid of it. I would like you to do the following steps in order following the instructions carefully:

Step #1

Please download and open the following zip file. Double-click on the file inside the zip and when it asks you if you would like to merge the file into your registry, please answer yes. This will make sure all files are visible on your computer.

http://www.davehigham.zen.co.uk/downloads/xphidden.zip

Step #2

The first thing I need you to do is download the file from here:

Getservice.zip

1. Extract the file to the c:\ drive.

2. Then navigate to the c:\getservices and double-click on the getservices.bat file.

3. A notepad will open up. Please paste the contents of that notepad as a reply to this post.

Step #3

This infection often continues to reinstall itself through a hidden dll which we have to find and remove.

1. Please download DllCompare
( The Screenshot will show you how the program will look when it starts.)

2. Start the Program with its default settings and put a check mark in the include subdirectories. Click the Run Locate.com and wait until the scan says complete.

3. Click the Compare button to start the next process.

4. Files in the upper portion have been verified to "exist", Files in the bottom section were not able to be accessed. Very few files should be listed in the bottom section when the Compare scan is complete.

5. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower section to select them. Right-click on the file and use the Option Rescan screenshot.

6. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then it will be removed from the list (to reduce the number of identified files) screenshot

7. Click the Make a Log of what was found button, and post the log here in this thread using Add Reply to receive further instructions.

Step #4

Please post the two log files here in this thread using 'Add Reply'

Hi Kevy-Jo,

This is a common error that occurs with Windows XP at times. There are two things you can do to get DllCompare to run (and any other program that causes these errors)

Step#1

1. This issue may occur if one or more of the following files are missing or damaged:
• Config.nt
• Autoexec.nt
• Command.com

2. First find DllCompare on your hard drive and right click on DllCompare.exe and choose Properties>Compatibility and choose run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 98, Windows 95 or Windows 3.11 whichever works. Compatibility for Windows 98 should work for this program.

3. Start DllCompare. If you receive the same error please continue with the next step:

Step#2

Following these steps will produce a file in notepad that appears to contain gibberish. Please post the entire contents of the Notepad Window back here.

1. Please Copy the contents of the quote box to Notepad.

Reg save "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows" windows1.hiv
ren windows1.hiv windows.txt

2. Save the notepad file as *All Files* with the name the file Appinit.bat
on the Desktop.

3. Double-click on Appinit.bat

4. This will create a file on the desktop named windows.txt

5. Please post the entire contents of Windows.txt to this thread using 'Add Reply'.
dgosling, I did as you said. I tried all of the windows operating systems in the combatibility options. None of them worked. So I moved on to step two. I put that file on the desktop saved as Appinit.bat. when i opened it, the file opened and closed in a split second. it wouldn't let me view it. The window just went away in the blink of an eye. I barely had time to see that the window appeared. what should I do? -Kevy-Jo
Hi Kevy-jo
Sounds like the infection has eaten your copy of Notepad which it often does. You should be able to find a clean copy of it in C:\Windows\System32\dllcache\ It is a hidden folder in windows that keeps copies of the files when the OS is originally installed. Please attempt to copy notepad.exe from C:\Windows\System32\dllcache\ to C:\Windows\ AND C:\Windows\System32. It should be 65kb (66,048 bytes) in size.

You could also try searching for Windows.txt with windows and see if you have the file on your hard drive. If you find the file, please go to Start>All Programs>Accessories> Wordpad and use Wordpad to open the file. If successful then you can use the contents of the Wordpad file to post here.

If you are unable to find or copy Notepad.exe Please go to the following
http://spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/windows/notepad_xp.zip
and download the notepad_XP.zip and install according to the following directions:
Windows XP:
Download the copy for your Windows version and unzip it first into the folder C:\WINDOWS\System32\dllcache (overwriting any existing copy), then into the folder it needs to go for your Windows version.
To see what Windows version you have, right-click the 'My Computer' icon on the desktop and click 'Properties'.

Hopefully this will allow you to then copy and paste and use Notepad to make and use AppInit.Bat which should produce the file Windows.txt.

It appears you are having no luck running DllCompare but there is one last way to find the hidden dll that I will give you if these don't work.
dgosling, No such luck… The Notepad.exe file wasn't in the dllcache folder, so I had to download it from the link that you gave to me. I installed the unzipped file to the two folders like you said, writing over the old programs… tried to run the Appinit.bat file… no luck. I even delete all of the files and started from scratch (after installing a fresh version of notepad, I copied & pasted the quote from the previous post into a file in notepad, and saved it as Appinit.bat on the desktop under "all files." Nothing changed at all. It still opens and disappears in the blink of an eye. There was a bit of progress made. This time it created a file on my desktop called windows1.hiv; however, i could not open this program b/c I didn't know what type of file it was & which program to select to open it… While I was searching for Notepad.exe in the dllcache folder (and didn't find it), I opened "Start > search" and looked for the file there. While I had Search open, I looked for the windows.txt file as well… I didn't find it. I hope you like a good challenge. I'm sorry that this is such a pain. And I want to thank you for everything that you've done so far, and everything that you continue to do! - Kevy-jo
dgosling, the windows.txt file just appeared on my desktop a few minutes ago, for some reason. I think it might be one of the effects of the virus (everything is super-slowed down with my computer). Hello Kevy-Jo,
It appears that you have an easier to clean variant of About Blank, but you have a lot of malware on your PC of other types. I would like you to open the Windows.txt file with either Notepad or Wordpad and look to make sure that you posted all of it. It is sometimes quite long and I just want to make sure that we are not missing something. If you find that there is more in the Windows.txt file then post the entire file back here in the next post and do nothing else

If you find that you did post all of the Windows.txt then please proceed with the following instructions - I will have you download and setup three programs and then boot into safe mode to run them so they are most effective:

Step#1

You have a program that is considered malware please go to Start>Control Panel>Add Remove Programs and uninstall Red Swoosh. It is a program that we don't recommend and you can replace it from the list of Safe Programs here

Step#2

Please use CTRL-ALT-DEL to End Task on the following processes:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\javacy32.exe

C:\Program Files\Windows SyncroAd\SyncroAd.exe

C:\WINDOWS\System32\mqohsm.exe

C:\Program Files\RSNet\RSEDNClient.exe

C:\Program Files\Windows SyncroAd\WinSync.exe

C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin Loughnane\Application Data\amee.exe

c:\bobby.exe
<— If you know what this is and it is a valid program please do nothing with it

Step#3

1. Please Download the most recent version of CWShredder 2.0into its own folder, from CWShredder 2.0

2. Check for Updates

Step#4

1. Downloaded and Install Spybot S&D, accepting the Default Settings

2. Check for Updates

3. In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.

Step#5

1. Download and Install Ad-Aware SE, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan

2. Check for Updates

3. Setup AdAware SE:
1) In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
*Automatically save log-file
*Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
*Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Under Definitions:
*Prompt to udate outdated definitions - set the number of days

2) Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green :

Under Driver, Folders & Files:
*Scan Within Archives

Under Select drives & folders to scan -
*choose all hard drives

Under Memory & Registry: all green
*Scan Active Processes
*Scan Registry
*Deep Scan Registry
*Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
*Scan my Hosts file

3) Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:

Under Shell Integration:
*Move deleted files to recycle bin

Under Logfile Detail Level: (all green)
*include addtional object information
*DESELECT - include negligible objects information
*include environment information

Under Alternate Data Streams:
*Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
*Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT

4) Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:

Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
*Unload recognized processes during scanning
*Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
*Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

Under the Log Files:
*Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Please do not check or make green: Include Module list in logfile

5) Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.

Step#6

Reboot into Safe Mode by Tapping F8 while booting up

Step#7

1. In Safe Mode CLOSE ALL WINDOWS except CWShredder

2. In Safe Mode, Run the program by clicking 'fix' and letting it fix all CWS remnants.

3. REBOOT to finish the removal and clear memory.back into Safe Mode

Step#8

1. In Safe Mode CLOSE ALL WINDOWS except Spybot SD

2. Click Check For Problems

3. Fix only the RED entries when it's finished

4. REBOOT to finish removing the bad entries back into Safe Mode

Step#9

1. In Safe Mode CLOSE ALL WINDOWS except Ad-Aware SE

2. Start the scan and choose Full System Scan

3. If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window

hey dgosling,
Okay…I did as you said… ran into a few problems…

in step # 2 : I couldn't close "syncroAd.exe" & "Winsync.exe" BUT they aren't there now, so I think it worked…

After i scanned the registry once more with HijackThis… the R1 files…whenever you said C:\Windows\SYSTEM32 … there weren't many files…but the same file extensions were found in a folder called "movdi.dll" (i'm referring to the sp.html#29126 files were found in a foler called movdi.dll, NOT in a folder called system32

in step 4: most of the files and folders weren't there to delete…so if I HAD to delete them, they weren't there…but i think it's a good thing that they weren't there…'cause that means the scans deleted them, no?

and that's all she wrote…. here's the newest hijackthis log that you wanted! Thanks so far! (PS: It took a while b/c the school shut down my internet port b/c i had a virus…)

Hello Kevy-jo
Well I hate to tell you this but sometimes not being able to find the files is bad because they have changed names. These bad infections often do this on a predetermined schedule and/or when you restart your computer. They are very stubborn and difficult to remove sometimes but they always succumb eventually.

I suspect that some of them have changed names, yes we have got rid of some of the junk which is great, every less infected file is good.

You said you have a folder named movdi which now contains a some of the R files. Would you please zip that folder up and attach it to an email and send it along with a link to this thread in the body of the email to This Email Address. Our developers would like identify those files for the infection they carry.

You said:

in step 4: most of the files and folders weren't there to delete

I am not sure I understand you as step 4 was to download, install and run Spybot SD. Was it another step or that one.

Your HijackThis log still shows some bad files. I wonder about the program that you are running called quickidrive tools1.1. Have you had it long or is it fairly new? Do you know that it is a legitimate program or could it be malware? Often the malware masquerades as a program and the only way the person finds out about it, is to remove it. Let me know what you know about it.

Now Let's try using HijackThis to remove some more files:

To remove the spyware/adware/malware from your computer please:

1. Please use CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up the Task Manager and End Task on the following files if they still exist:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSCFG16.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\?hkdsk.exe

2. Go to Start>Control Panel>Add Remove Programs and uninstall Adware BuddyLinks or PSD Tools or any variation thereof.

3. Scan again with HijackThis (ALL WINDOWS CLOSED EXCEPT HJT)

4. Put a check mark beside each of the following entries in the HJT window

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\movdi.dll/sp.html#29126

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\movdi.dll/sp.html#29126

Good Luck!
dgosling,
Okay…i did as you said… I made a mistake… THERE WAS NO FOLDER NAMED MOVDI I made the assumption that because some of the strings in the scan of hijackthis said " R1 - HKCU\software\microsoft\internet explorer\main, search bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\movdi.dll/sp.html#29126 " that meant that it was a folder name…i stand corrected…

furthermore… the quickdrive tools1.1 that you were inquiring about… Instead of having floppy disks or cds, sometimes i use this little handheld memory card that plugs in via a USB port… that's my quickdrive… nevertheless, I rarely ever use it…and I removed the program just in case. moving on, there is a program (towards the bottom of the ADD/REMOVE Programs list) that i'm skeptical about it's a program called windows AdTools. do you recognise that program?

In step 1, whne you told me to End Task the program "c:\WINDOWS\system32\?hkdsk.exe … it wasn't there…

in the scan, the only R1 program that didn't exist was the top-most one (R1 - HKCU\software\microsoft\internet explorer\main, search bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\movdi.dll/sp.html#29126)… I checked and fixed the rest

in step 5, when i rebooted the computer in safe mode…none of the files you told me to delete existed

that's all I have for now… here is the lasted scan you wanted…thanks for your help!

Hi Kevy-Jo,

Step#1:

First thing I want you to do is uninstall Windows AdTools - it is adware. Go to Start>Control Panel>Add Remove Programs> uninstall Windows AdTools.
The files that may be on your PC from It are Ice Age.exe, 2 Fast 2 Furious.exe, Finding Nemo ScreenMate.exe and you may want to check for them and delete them after you uninstall it.

Movdi.dll is a file which should be located in your Window\System32 directory and it is bad. However looking at the new HijackThis log it appears to have been removed by your other efforts, but it may still be in the System32 folder.
You can reinstall the Quickidrive tools as they are legitimate files and you may need them to use your USB port (you may want to wait until you are clean for this)

Step#2:

For use later, please download pocket killbox and Install it to its own folder.

Step#3:

Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix to prevent the controlling files in the infection from contacting the internet and downloading more junk.

Step#4:

There are a few more files that you need to end task on (if they are still there):
Use CTRL-ALT-DEL to open task manager and then choose END TASK for the following:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\dvldr.exe

C:\Program Files\Windows AdTools\WinAdTools.exe

C:\Program Files\Windows AdTools\WinRatchet.exe

Please also look for the following entry which may be there with another letter substituted for the ?."c:\WINDOWS\system32\?hkdsk.exe

Step#5:

I will get you now to use HijackThis to remove what is left and also have you look for those files that you weren't able to find earlier. You will be doing this in Normal Mode

1. Scan again with HijackThis (ALL WINDOWS CLOSED EXCEPT HJT)

2. Put a check mark beside each of the following entries in the HJT window

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Automatic Updates] dvldr.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows AdTools] C:\Program Files\Windows AdTools\WinAdTools.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows Automatic Updates] dvldr.exe

3. Click 'fix checked

4. REBOOT to finish removing the entries back into Normal Mode

5. Open Pocket Killbox

6. I would like you to attempt to kill each of the following files with killbox.

7. For each file, copy and paste the path as noted below eg.:
C:\Program Files\Windows AdTools\WinAdTools.exe

into the box in killbox and click kill file.

8. Please enter each of the following in the box in killbox and click Kill File

C:\Program Files\Windows AdTools\WinAdTools.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\htprs.dll

C:\WINDOWS\System32\services\msxmidi.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\appjs32.dll

C:\windows\system32\winrup32.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\javacy32.exe

C:\Program Files\Windows SyncroAd\SyncroAd.exe <— File and Folder

C:\WINDOWS\System32\mqohsm.exe

C:\Windows\dvldr.exe AND/OR C:\Windows\System32\dvldr.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipcf.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\apivz32.exe

C:\Program Files\RSNet\RSEDNClient.exe <— File and Folder

C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin Loughnane\Application Data\amee.exe

C:\WINDOWS\System32\?hkdsk.exe

C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe <– File and 2 Folders

9. Then use windows explorer to navigate to the path of each file eg C:\ProgramFiles OR C:\Windows OR C:\Windows\System32 and delete the file

10. REBOOT each time you kill and delete a file to make sure each one is gone.

11. Then delete the folders that are left :

C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\

C:\WINDOWS\System32\services\

C:\Program Files\Windows SyncroAd\

C:\Program Files\Windows AdTools\

Step#6:

Now you need to see if you need to restore some deleted files:
  • Please check for the following files using the Windows Search Engine:

  • control.exe
  • rundll32.exe
  • wmplayer.exe
  • msconfig.exe
  • notepad.exe
  • shell.dll
  • SDHelper.dll

If any are missing or not working properly then you can download new copies from
Merijn's Files and following the instructions at that site to have them where they belong for your OS.

  • Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program. This will restore the original deleted Hosts file.
  • This infection often deletes some system files that need to be replaced. The most frequent one it deletes is shell.dll in Win2K or XP. In XP there are two copies of this file, one is Windows (WINNT) and one in Windows\System32. It does not delete the ones in Windows\System so it does not affect Win9x/ME. If you find it missing please copy the shell.dll from c:\windows\system32\dllcache into both \Windows (WINNT) and Windows\System32 .
  • The other system file which is most frequently deleted is control.exe. Please check to make sure that you have this file and if not Please check for the existence of this file by going to to Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and examine where the file should be for your operating system. If the file is missing then download the appropriate file and place it in the proper place according to this information. The control.exe is more often deleted in Win9x/ME.
  • If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file. Go here: Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing you Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy). Then click Start > Run > regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll" and press the OK button
Step#7:

Run an online antivirus scan at:

Trend Micro Online AV

Reboot

Step#8:

1. Scan again with HijackThis

2. POST your log file to see if there is anything left to fix
the virus scan found 23 infected files… it was unable to clean them, so i deleted them… most were a virus called WORM RBOT.VN

here's the post that you wanted:
