Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

Start the Program with and click the Run Locate.com - be sure the \Windows\System32 directory is in the box and wait until the the blue text says it has 'completed the scan'.

Click the Compare button to start the next process. The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist', files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'. Very few files should be listed in the lower pane when the Compare scan is complete. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button and post the log here in this thread and wait for further instructions.
Thank you for responding…I very much appreciate your help! My log file is posted below…but you should know a few things first. 1) My first time running the program I got NO entries in the bottom pane so I rescanned but select *.* files and selected to scan all subfolders. This time I did get many results…after rescanning and many being taken off the list I was left with only a few. 2) I initially tried solving this problem several months ago by IDing the .dll file through registrar lite…I then tried getting rid of it with a program called findn'fix. It moved the file I think but my hijacker wasn't gone. If I run registrar lite again to find the file it won't give me anything for the "value". Hopefully, you can figure it out….cause I can't…Anyways here is the log file… * DLLCompare Log version(1.0.0.125) Files Found that Windows does not See or cannot Access *Not everything listed here means you are infected! ________________________________________________ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MICROS~1\PROTECT\S-1-5-18\USER\f1970e~1 Thu Jul 3 2003 10:38:06p A.SH. 388 0.38 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MICROS~1\PROTECT\S-1-5-18\USER\prefer~1 Wed Sep 29 2004 12:58:40a A.SH. 24 0.02 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MICROS~1\PROTECT\S-1-5-18\USER\237576~1 Thu Oct 2 2003 12:17:36a A.SH. 388 0.38 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MICROS~1\PROTECT\S-1-5-18\USER\bfebbe~1 Fri Jan 2 2004 3:07:00p A.SH. 388 0.38 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MICROS~1\PROTECT\S-1-5-18\USER\e9cbf3~1 Thu Apr 1 2004 6:02:00p A.SH. 388 0.38 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MICROS~1\PROTECT\S-1-5-18\USER\a997c0~1 Wed Jun 30 2004 7:23:40p A.SH. 388 0.38 K C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MICROS~1\PROTECT\S-1-5-18\USER\f1fe5c~1 Wed Sep 29 2004 12:58:40a A.SH. 388 0.38 K ________________________________________________ 7,797 items found: 7,611 files (105 H/S), 186 directories (30 H/S). Please download CWShredder

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run CWShredder. Click "Fix", and let it fix what it can.

Then be sure you have the latest versions of Spybot (v 1.3), and Adaware SE (build 1.05).

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de (This is the NEW Version 1.3)

http://www.cjwd.demon.co.uk/spybot-adaware.html

Reboot after running each program.

Next, please make a PERMANANT folder for Hijack This!

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.

Good job!!!!

"About:blank" has several variations.

Fortunately you had (keyword "had" - it's gone now!) the mildest case.

GOD bless!!!

M68 :)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?" here:

http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

Download IE-Spyad here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck.qualys.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
(Personally, I'm NOT recommending SP2 for XP at this time)
