Any help for this problem would be gratefully received :) My home page appears to have been hijacked by about:blank. AdAware 5 (already installed) does not bring up anything. I have installed SpyBot 1.3, & whilst this bought up a few problems that I fixed, the problem is still there. On recommendation from an article at spywareinfo.com, I have downloaded & saved Hijack.This. However, I cannot open the program as it keeps coming up with the message : 'ERROR STARTING PROGRAM - A required .DLL file, MSVBVM60.DLL was not found' Any ideas ? Many thanks. My computer is a home PC running on Windows 98 with dial-up connection.
Thankyou for that link. We have now managed to open Hijack This.

The log it produces is the following:

Please could you advise on further action to take.

We tried deleting the references to about:blank and rebooted the system but the problem is still occuring.

Many thanks.
Fixing this hijacker in Windows 98 can be tough and may take several steps.

Here's the programs we are going to use:

Please download and unzip
AboutBuster to a folder. Inside the folder is a readme file that has instructions on the use of the program.
AboutBuster MUST be updated before you use it.
Start AboutBuster, click the update button, check for update, drag the box to the side and hit download updates, close the box . Don't run it yet.
Current reference list # is 15

Please download and install AD-Aware.
Check Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first.

HowToShowHiddenFiles <—do this

Reboot into SafeMode and don't open IE again until they're complete.

Go to Start-Run, type: regedit , enter

Find- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
check for a key called-HOMEOldsp, if present- delete it.

And if you have some files in searchpage/searchbar which end with ?\sp delete them also.

Go to Edit in registry and type - HOMEOldsp.
Click-Find Next, delete it-if present.
Use F3 for search more, if you find more- delete them.
Same procedure with-About:blank
Close Registry.

Bring up your task manager (ctrl + alt + delete) and end task on these files if listed:

adxffg.exe
NTCH32.EXE

With only HJT running fix these:

Thanks for the reply. I've downloaded AboutBuster but when I try to open it get the following message: "Run time error 339 component 'mscomctl.ocx' not correctly registered, file missing or invalid' Any suggestions? Many thanks.
Am working my way through the steps (very slowly !) but have hit another obstacle when trying to reboot the system in Safe Mode. It brings up the menu, I select 'Safe Mode', but it then comes up with the following :- 'ERROR - HIMEM.SYS has detected unreliable XMS memory at address O1EF03B6. XMS driver not installed. To continue press ENTER'. On pressing ENTER, the following appears :- 'HIMEM.SYS is missing. Make sure the file is in your Windows Directory. Windows has stopped' And then I have to reboot again. Any ideas ? Thank you.
Have tried the recommended actions, namely by creating a boot floppy then coping the himem file onto c:\. But still no luck. Same error messages :( Is there any way round this Safe Mode ? Would it spell disaster if I continued the steps in normal mode ?? Thank you very much for all your help. I'll check back again tomorrow.
No do it in normal mode, just bring up your task manager (ctrl + alt + delete) and end task on any of the files listed to be deleted. MrC
Hey presto, appears to have solved the problem, fingers crossed :)

Some sites still come up with the tag 'Trusted sites' in the bottom right of the window, despite the fact that I have NO sites listed as Trusted in Internet Options - but I assume this is just a minor gripe & isn't a security concern.

Thanks for the reply. The problem I have now is that HijackThis is not running properly. I press 'SCAN', & it begins to scan but freezes on 'O15 Trusted Zone Enumeration'. I have to bring up Task Manager to close it. Looks like something is still up with the Trusted sites/zone. Any ideas ? Thank you.
