michaell – Thanks for sending your HijackThis log. I cannot find any malware in it,

And from your comment:

you guys helped me clean it up in the past, but the sites were obvious the first time…not so easy this time…

you probably already knew that.

But, I didn’t like the looks of a file in your running processes called:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\mcc.exe

And, this is what I found on google:

Lab Report from Sophos:
Troj/Dloader-MB

Troj/Dloader-MB is a Trojan downloader.

In order to run automatically when Windows starts up the Trojan copies itself to the file mcc.exe in the Windows system folder and adds the following registry entry: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Multimedia Codecs = C:\Windows\System32\mcc.exe

Troj/Dloader-MB downloads a text file from a preconfigured URL to links.tmp in the Windows temporary folder. The Trojan then registers itself as a service process and periodically performs actions listed in the downloaded file. These actions can be either URLs (which are opened in Internet Explorer) or arbitrary commands.

Troj/Dloader-MB also creates a set of registry entries for its own use beneath HKCU\Software\Media Codecs\DDMMYYYY\

(where DDMMYYYY represents the date on which the Trojan was run)

To disable the Trojan, do this:

1 – Start by creating a backup copy of your registry. Please link to these instructions:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam

then, expand the tutorial called ‘How to back up (and restore) the entire registry’ and follow the instructions for Windows XP.

2 – Right-click on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen and select "Task Manager". Select the tab marked "Processes", and under the heading "Image Name" select the process for the file mcc.exe

With mcc.exe highlighted click the button marked "End Process", and close Task Manager.

3 – Click on the start button on the taskbar and select "Run". And type regedit

Navigate to the registry setting for "hkey_current_user\software\media codecs" and delete the whole ‘media codecs’ registry key (highlight it in the left hand panel), and use ‘Edit > Delete’

Navigate to "hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run" and delete the registry value (in the right hand panel) associated with mcc.exe

4 – To prevent any remnants of the Trojan from hiding out in your restore files, please disable Windows System Restore, then reboot, then re-enable Windows System Restore by following the instructions at: "How to turn off or turn on Windows XP System Restore"

5 – Next, clean out all the temporary files and cookies on your system. Go to Start > Run and enter: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Check these three boxes and then press ok to remove: Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin.

Now, let's take another look at your system.

Please run HijackThis to create a new logfile. Repost it here, and if you had any problems with the steps outlined above, please let us know what they were. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.

Thanks

Mike – Thanks for the update.

I think I see my problem. I forgot to have you 'show hidden files'. My apologies. These bad guys typically make the files hidden.

Also, a new problem cropped up…Netster is now in your downloaded programs under IE (the O16 entries)

Let's try a different approach:

Since you will not be able to access this page in safe mode during this fix, please print these instructions now, or save them to your desktop, to help keep track of the steps.

To start, allow yourself to view "Hidden files". Open Windows Explorer and go to "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" then click on the "Show Hidden Files and Folders" option, and un-check "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files" options. Then click the "Apply To All Folders" button.

1 – Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Multimedia Codecs] C:\WINDOWS\System32\mcc.exe

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/27156b21f025c2…ip/RdxIE601.cab

And, this is an optional item you may choose to fix:

Office Startup Asistant is an optional item that if checked, will eliminate a known resource hog. You will still be able to start Office components from the Start menu. This is the item to fix in HJT:
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, and remember to make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, and click fix checked.

4 – Reboot into Safe Mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?), then use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\mcc.exe <– this file

Please let me know about any problems with the file/folder deletes.

5 – Next, use "Start > Run" and type in "%temp%" (without the quotes). Delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder (use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes").

Then, Empty your Temporary Internet Cache completely. Close all instances of Outlook and and Internet Explorer, then use "Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab" and click the "Delete File" button. When prompted place a check in: "Delete all offline content", then click OK.

Then, use Windows Explorer to clean out ALL the other temp folders on your system (navigate to the folder, use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes"):

* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

Please let me know about any problems with the temp file deletes.

6 – Now reboot, and run either of these two Online virus scans: Panda Active Scan or TrendMicro Housecall and put on Auto Clean.

Now, reboot normally, and we'll take another look at your system.

Please run HijackThis to create a new logfile. Repost it here, and if you had any problems with the steps outlined above, please let us know what they were. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.

Thanks
daveai
Thank you thank you thank you….I think it finally worked…should I uncheck those hidden files or just leave it as is. I could not get the panda scan to work I will try those again later. do you still want a hijack this scan?? thanks again, Mike
Thanks for the response. I'm glad your system is behaving :) Good work !

If the Panda scan will not work for you, then try the TrendMicro Housecall. If that won't work, let me know and Ican supply some others. It's a good idea to see an anti virus product give a clean bill of health to a previously infected system.

Please send me a final HJT log wo we can be certain all the malware is gone.

And, please allow me to suggest some prevention steps to keep your computer clean and secure going forward. You may have already taken a few of the steps, but it never hurts to take a quick look :)

1 – Use an AntiVirus Software, and be sure you update it at least once a week. There are several very good free programs available. Grinler offers an outstanding overview at Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

2 – To reduce re-infection potential for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing three free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE/Spyad.

3 – Use AdAware SE and Spybot S&D; to regularly to scan your system.

4 – It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and XP are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

5 – I strongly recommend that you consider using a Firewall. Just by using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Check out what Lawrence Abrams has to say at Understanding and Using Firewalls

An excellent overview is: So how did I get infected in the first place?. Be sure to visit the browser test link at the end of the article to really see how secure your system is!!

Thanks
daveai
