CWShredder didn't find anything
I ran System File Checker and the only file it found as altered was Setupx.dll. I didn't restore since I'm not sure what it is. I started to try the re-install per the instructions so I opened the registry to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}. There is no "IsInstalled" value. There was a subfolder called Authorized CDFPrefix. Inside that were two values. The first was Default which had no value set. The second was http.www.microsoft.com. Could this missing "IsInstalled" be causing the problem? Is there a fix for that?
The operating system is Win98. The instructions are for XP. I'm not much of a DOS guru. When I typed in cmd at "run" it couldn't find the file…..If I type in command it brings up the dos screen. It shows c://Windows/desktop. I changed the directory all the way back to C://. I tried typing C://sfc/scannow and it came back "bad command". I know this is something simple but I haven't been in dos for a long time and forgot most. I ran System File Checker from windows help assuming it was the same thing. Isn't it?
