I have not been able to get rid of the about:blank page that has hijacked each of the user homepages on our Windows XP computer. I've run ad-aware 6 and installed Norton 2005 yesterday. Please help. I'm attaching the hijackthis log below that was created today. Thanks! C

Let's see if you have a hidden hijacker. Do this for me.

Click here to download DllCompare. Start the Program with and click the Run Locate.com - be sure the \Windows\System32 directory is in the box and wait until the the blue text says it has 'completed the scan'.

Click the Compare button to start the next process. The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist', files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'. Very few files should be listed in the lower pane when the Compare scan is complete. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button and post the log here in this thread and wait for further instructions.
Sorry for the delayed response. All hell has broken loose on my computer. I tried to print your response and suddenly the computer has started shutting down on attempts to access IE and Outlook Express. I was finally able to run the dllCompare program. However it wouldn't let me open the file because it couldn't find Notebook. Luckily I have another computer to forward it to and it seems to be working. Here is the log . . . * DLLCompare Log version(1.0.0.125) Files Found that Windows does not See or cannot Access *Not everything listed here means you are infected! ________________________________________________ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\win.dll Mon May 24 2004 5:00:48p A…R 57,344 56.00 K ________________________________________________ 1,269 items found: 1,269 files, 0 directories. Click here to download xphidden.zip (so you can see hidden files and folders). Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double-click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

Then using Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\System32\dllcache

You should see a version of notepad.exe in there, 65KB in size. Copy it to both these places:

C:\Windows\
C:\Windows\System32\

Click here to download FindnFix.exe (2K/XP only!) by freeatlast. Double-click on the FINDnFIX.exe and it will install a folder called FINDnFIX on your system. Go to that folder and double-click on !LOG!.bat. The program takes a few minutes to collect the necessary information. When done post the contents of Log.txt in this thread.

Completely disable any antivirus software you have running from this point on until we have finished.

In the keys1 folder, double click on FIX.bat. You will get an alert of about 15 seconds before reboot - allow it to reboot. On restart, open Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\System32 folder, find the WIN.DLL file (it should be visible now). Highlight the file and using top menu, click Edit>Move to folder…

Select C:\Findnfix\junkxxx as destination. Move the file.

Open the FINDnFIX folder again and double-click on RESTORE.bat. When it is finished, in FINDnFIX folder, there will be a file called Log2.txt - post it's contents in your next reply.
As instructed I did disable Norton Antivirus. However, upon reboot after FIX.bat, and unbeknownst to me, it re-enabled and popped up during RESTORE.bat. I again disabled it, prior to the log generation. Do I need to redo this step? Either way, here is the log . . . No it's interfered in the way we were trying to prevent. Do this for me.

Could you click here to download CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom and run it, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. If you already have CWShredder, click 'Check for update' and make sure you are running version 1.59.1 Reboot when done. Rescan with HJT and post a new log in your next reply.
I did CWShredder as instructed. Here's the latest HJT log. . . Thank you!

Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50038

Click on Config then click on Misc Tools. At the new screen click on the "Delete a file on reboot" button. You will be presented with a dialog asking you to pick a file. Copy and paste C:\Program Files\CasinoOnline\CsRemnd.exe into the file name field and press the open button.

Hijackthis will prompt you to reboot, please do so. Rescan with HJT and post a new log here for a final check over.
For the first time in a LOOOOOOOOOOONG time, I didn't get any error messages on reboot. Progress! Thank you! Here's the latest HJT log . . .

Progress, yes, but there's a couple of BHO's in there I'd like to look at. Click here, for instructions on how to enable hidden files and folders to be visible. After enabling, find, zip and send these files:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wrie.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\nlhtme.dll

to this e-mail address including a link to this thread in the body of the email. They may be OK but I'd like to take a closer look - I'll get back to you if any further action is required.
