Hi. My Windows XP Pro SP1 machine is infected with a particularly insidious piece, or pieces of spyware that AdAware 6.0 and Spybot Search & Destroy will not remove. I'm also running a program called SpyWare Guard version 2.2.0 from Javacool software. Every time I boot the computer and whenever I turn on Internet Explorer, the spyware tries to change my home page and search bars, but SG blocks the attempts by prompting me to remove the BHO.

Because of this, my homepage is still the same, but it keeps trying to change it to about:blank. At first this is all it did. It was annoying, but I could live with it. Then I ran Adaware and it seemed to cure it. Now, it' has re-surfaced and it will not allow me to check my yahoo mail. I can go to the yahoo home page, but as soon as I try to sign in and read my mail it switches the page to about:blank and SG doesn't block it. It also takes over and won't let me download any Windows updates. It's very invasive and I'd like to purge my system of this obnoxious pest. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Below is my Hijack This log file:

Hi. I posted my Hijack This log back on September 9th but got no response. I'd like to rid my system of the annoying hijacker(s) that are present and I decided to run the program again to create a new log. Here it is:

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Charlie
I apologize for the long delay in responding to you. As you can see the forums are very busy and there are few of us that can work with the infection that you have. You have one of the newer severe infections that take several steps to fix. This variant of CWS often drops a hidden DLL file on your pc that reinstalls the infection at regular intervals so the first thing we must do is find the hidden dll and then make it visible and then delete it and all of the other files it drops.

Step#1

To start, we need to make sure that all files on your pc can be seen. Please download and open the following zip file. Double-click on the file inside the zip and when it asks you if you would like to merge the file into your registry, please answer yes. This will make sure all files are visible on your computer.
http://www.davehigham.zen.co.uk/downloads/xphidden.zip

Step#2

We need to turn off System Restore so it doesn't back up any of the infected files (it probably already has but turning it off will remove them) You will lose all previous backups. We will re-enable it when your PC is clean.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

Step#3

Please turn off the resident portions of Spyware Guard and Spybot SD as we have found that when enabled they prevent the fix for the infection from working. If you just stop them loading at startup and turn off the monitor it should be fine.

Step#4

This infection continues to reinstall itself through a hidden dll which we have to find and remove.

1. Please download DllCompare
( The Screenshot will show you how the program will look when it starts.)

2. Start the Program with its default settings and put a check mark in the include subdirectories. Click the Run Locate.com and wait until the scan says complete.

3. Click the Compare button to start the next process.

4. Files in the upper portion have been verified to "exist", Files in the bottom section were not able to be accessed. Very few files should be listed in the bottom section when the Compare scan is complete.

5. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower section to select them. Right-click on the file and use the Option Rescan screenshot.

6. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then it will be removed from the list (to reduce the number of identified files) screenshot

7. Click the Make a Log of what was found button, and post the log here in this thread using Add Reply to receive further instructions.

Step#5

1. Scan again with HJT

2. Post a new log file here in this thread with the log file from DllCompare.

Good Luck!
Hi, and thanks for your response. I understand about the delay and it's not a problem. I followed all of the steps, except running HiJack This again, and here is the log for dllcompare: * DLLCompare Log version() Files Found that Windows does not See or cannot Access *Not everything listed here means you are infected! ________________________________________________ C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\ms.dll Wed Jun 30 2004 2:03:38a A…R 57,344 56.00 K ________________________________________________ 2,622 items found: 2,622 files, 0 directories. OK, here is the second HJT log:

Thanks again,

Hi Charlie
OK we have the name of the hidden dll now! Now we prepare to make it visible so that it can be removed. This next set of instructions are very detailed and should be followed very carefully.

Step #1

1. Click here to download and install Registrar Lite. Install, run, copy and paste this line to reglite's address bar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

2. Click the "go" tab. Find the: "Appinit_Dlls" key in the right hand pane and and double click to find the "Value" data. Confirm that C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ms.dll appears in the 'Value' field.

3. Using Windows Explorer, go to your root drive: C:\ and create a new folder called 'Hijack' and within that folder, create two new folders, one called 'Backups' and one called 'Junk'.

4. Use the Registrar Lite program. Copy and paste the key below into reglite's address bar and click 'Go':

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\

5. Click on the Windows key to highlight it in purple, and use the top menu File>Export and save as (in the C:\Hijack\Backups folder):

1) Winkey.reg (Save as type: regedit4 .reg type)
2) Winkey.hiv (Save as type: Scroll to select-regetd32/WinAPI *hiv *dat files)

6. Navigate to C:\Hijack\Backups and confirm both files have been successfully saved.

7. Use the Registrar Lite program again. Copy and paste the key below into reglite's address bar and hit 'Go':

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

8. Right-click on the Windows key in the left pane and rename it to notwindows. Then double-click "Appinit_Dlls" value in right pane and erase the data in the 'Value' box at the bottom of the new pane. The data to remove will be:

"C:\WINDOWS\System32\ms.dll", hit 'Apply' and 'Ok' to set.

9. Rename 'NotWindows' back to 'Windows' in the left pane,

10. close Registrar Lite and reboot the computer. If everything works the hidden process will not run at startup and you should now be able to find and *see* the ms.dll in C:\WINDOWS\System32.

11. Unzip and run Winfile from Winfile.zip. Open it up, click File > Move

12. Copy and paste this into the 'From' box: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ms.dll

13.Copy and paste this into the 'To' box: C:\Hijack\Junk\ms.dll

14. Click OK. Close Winfile and check in C:\Hijack\Junk for that file and report back the contents of the junk folder.

Step #2

You have made changes to your Registry with Regedit/RegLite and the security permissions have been lowered when you renamed the Windows Key folder. To repair the security permissions please do the following:

1)Please navigate to C:\Hijack\Backups and double click on the winkey.reg file and merge the information into the registry.

2)Now open Regedit/RegLite and go to File > import Winkey.hiv into the registry.

3)Copy and Paste the following bold text into the address bar of Reglite (navigate to this location with Regedit)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

4)Delete the entry in the AppInit_DLLs Value key which will look like: C:\Windows\System32]ms.dll and then close Regedit/RegLite. (the file no longer exists at that location so the registry entry is an orphan entry)

Step #3

Please Download the most recent version of CWShredder, from CWShredder.exe Download into it's own folder.Check for Updates, then fix anything that it finds.

Step #4

1. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS

2. Run Hijack This! and put a check mark beside the following entries:

C:\WINNT\System32\imkab.dll
C:\??\All USers\??\server[1].exe
C:\WINNT\System32\runner.exe

5. Reboot and post a new HijackThis log file.

Good Luck!
I'm just editing my last post. So far, I'm done with step #1 and am ready to proceed to step #2. Although, upon re-boot, it still tried to change my home page. But, I have now moved the ms.dll file the C:\Hijack\Junk folder. On to step #2!
Ok, I think this fixed it! Let's keep our fingers crossed. There are only two issues I have:

1. The system will not allow me to delete C:\WINNT\System32\runner.exe.
2. I could not locate C:\WINNT\System32\imkab.dll

Anyway, when I re-booted and started Internet Explorer, it didn't try to hikack the home page or search bars. How can I delete runner.exe? Here is the new log:

Thanks so much for your help!

Step#1

Download this program to kill the file from:killbox Just copy and paste c:\WINNT\system32\runner.exeinto the box in killbox and hit kill file.
Then use windows explorer to navigate to C:\WINNT\System32\ and delete the file runner.exe
REBOOT to make sure it is gone.

Then repeat the process for C:\WINNT\System32\imkab.dll and maybe killbox will find it

Step#2

Ad-Aware SE is an antispyware program which will remove some remnants

1. Download and Install Ad-Aware SE, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan

2.Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE

3. Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.

4. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window

1) In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
*Automatically save log-file
*Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
*Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Under Definitions:
*Prompt to udate outdated definitions - set the number of days

2) Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green :

Under Driver, Folders & Files:
*Scan Within Archives

Under Select drives & folders to scan -
*choose all hard drives

Under Memory & Registry: all green
*Scan Active Processes
*Scan Registry
*Deep Scan Registry
*Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
*Scan my Hosts file

3) Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:

Under Shell Integration:
*Move deleted files to recycle bin

Under Logfile Detail Level: (all green)
*include addtional object information
*DESELECT - include negligible objects information
*include environment information

Under Alternate Data Streams:
*Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
*Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT

4) Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:

Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
*Unload recognized processes during scanning
*Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
*Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

Step#3

There is one entry which is being stubborn

1. Scan again with HijackThis (ALL WINDOWS CLOSED EXCEPT HJT)

2. Put a check mark beside each of the following entries in the HJT window

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [runner.exe] C:\WINNT\System32\runner.exe

3. Click 'fix checked'

4. REBOOT to finish removing the entries

5. DELETE the following files:

C:\WINNT\System32\runner.exe

6. REBOOT into normal mode

7. please SCAN again with HJT

8. POST a new log file here in this thread using 'Add Reply' to see if we removed it this time.

Please run disk cleanup and delete your Temp and Temporary Internet Files and Empty your Recycle Bin. Please also reset System Restore to remove the backed up infected files.

Also make certain you check through your Internet Explorer Favorites to remove the links that were added by the malware.

Re-enable Spyware Guard, TeaTimer and System Restore once you are completely clean and also please delete the C:\Hijack\junk folder.
Well, that Killbox program was able to find and delete the C:\WINNT\system32\runner.exe file! The C:\WINNT\systems32\imkab.dll file was not able to be found, so it must have been removed during the first set of instructions I followed.

After running AdAware SE, there were over 400 objects it found! Some of them were registry history files, but I was amazed at how much more this found than the regular version of AdAware. It's unbelievable! I removed all of the entries and quarantined them, and ran HJT again and removed the entry for that runner.exe file. All I have to do now is run disk cleanup, which I do regularly anyway, and that will be it. If the new log turns out to be clean, should we post this in the solved Hijacks forum? Here is the new log:

Thanks so much! You guys really know your stuff!

Charlie
OK, there's one more problem. I cannot delete the C:\Hijack\junk folder. I tried deleting this through Killbox and it wouldn't work either. I just ran disk cleanup and deleted the temporary internet files and other temp files, cleared the history, and deleted the cookies. What should I do to remove the ms.dll file? Charlie
The log appears clean! However I wouldn't delete the backups yet, only the junk until you have rebooted for a day or two to make sure it is gone. If we leave even one file it can reinstall itself, but I think we got it all.

To delete the file and folder, try this - boot into Safe Mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded. (this is only available in Safe Mode) Right-click on the C:\Hijack\Junk\MS.DLL go to the Security tab>advanced and take ownership giving yourself 'Full control' (preferably to Administrators 'group'). Right-click the C:\Hijack\Junk folder and hit properties. Click on security tab then the advanced button. Check the box that says reset permissions on all child objects. Hit apply.

You should now be able to delete the file and folder. Let me know how you get on and post a new HJT log in this thread.

You should clean out System Restore because other programs are unable to clean any files in the backups. All Restore Points will be lost when you do this but they are probably infected anyway.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Microsoft has recently released SP2 which contains new critical updates for both Windows and Internet Explorer, last week. Please go to Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the cirtical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update

Please turn the resident portions of Spyware Guard and Spybot SD back on! I will keep this post open for a day or so to make sure that you have no more problems, plus one more HJT log file would help make sure that it is all gone.

Good Luck!
Ok, I went into safe mode and followed your instructions. That did it! I was finally able to delete that son of a ######! I turned off system restore, rebooted, and then turned it back on.

Part of what this Hijacker did was prevent my Norton Anti-Virus from getting any live updates, so my virus reference file was outdated. No matter what I did, live update simply would not work. I'd click on it, and nothing would happen. It was the same way with SpyWare Guard. The live update feature wouldn't work for that either. Now, they both work.

I tried to install Windows XP Service Pack 2, and it got most of the way through, but failed. I searched the MS information pages for my error code, but couldn't find any information. Prior to this infection, my system never had any troubles downloaded anything from Microsoft. In fact, I regularly downloaded all of the upgrades. Now that the machine is clean, I'll give service pack 2 another shot. Thanks so much! You really helped me out a lot. I owe you a few beers!! Let me know if we should put this into the Solved Hijacks forum.

Charlie
Looks good Congratulations! I wish you luck downloading SP2 - people have had trouble because it is so large. If you continue to have trouble just keep trying. APparently one of the good things about SP2 is it is supposed to have a download manager in it that will allow you to complete a download the next time you log on to Microsoft. I will close and move this thread to 'solved' in a day or two. Good Luck!
I downloaded the XP Pro Service Pack 2 yesterday with no trouble! It has an a popup blocker built into it which I noticed as soon as I went to CNN.com and checked the sports pages to see when the Yankees are playing. Overall, everything is fine. Thanks again and hopefully someone else will benefit from these instructions in the solved Hijacks forum. Charlie
