Hi, I'm using my computer at work because I cannot connect to the internet at home. When I go to start the internet on my home computer, it just comes up blank, and you can see in the bottom left corner "badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com" flashing, and then the browser closes. Does anyone know what is going on with that? Thanks!
Hello smp182,

It is hard to tell what is wrong with your computer without a log file. If you are able to I suggest that you download HijackThis from the following address on your work computer and then take it home and install it to your computer, run it and save the log file back to disk and then post it here in the forum when you are at work. Then we can give you some instructions to fix the problem.

We need a Hijack This log file to be able to analyze what is happening on your computer. If you do not have a copy of Hijack This please follow the instructions in order: (if you have HJT please follow instructions 4 to 6)

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' and name the folder 'Hijack This'.

2. Download Hijackthis to the new folder from this website: http://www.downloads.subratam.org/hijackthis.zip

3. Double Click on 'HijackThis.zip' to extract and install HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

4. Close ALL windows except HJT

5. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')

6. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Somehow you are using the old version of HijackThis, The current version is 1.98.2 and shows many more things than the version you have used. You have one of the most severe types of infections that we are seeing these days and we really need the newer version of the HJT logs to find some of the infected files.

I will give you instructions on some of the things you can do before another HJT log is required.

One of the reasons you are as infected as you are is the presence of P2P Networking, Altnet Points Manager, and eAccelerations StopSign/StopZilla that usually bring adware and malware to your computer. I would uninstall them.

Now go to Start>Control Panel>Add Remove Programs and uninstall P2P Networking, Altnet Points Manager and StopSign/StopZilla/eAcceleration or any name similar to these. They are programs that we don't recommend and you can replace it from the list of Safe Programs here

This infection can install an extra service so that windows uses it to connect to the internet. To find this extra service there is a small program which we ask you to download and run Download the file from here:
Getservice.zip

Extract the file to the c:\ drive. Then navigate to the c:\getservices and double-click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up. Please paste the contents of that notepad as a reply to this post.

This infection also can install a hidden file. It will take a bit of time to solve your problems. This infection continues to reinstall itself through a hidden dll which we have to find and remove.

1. Please download DllCompare
( The Screenshot will show you how the program will look when it starts.)

2. Start the Program with its default settings and put a check mark in the include subdirectories. Click the Run Locate.com and wait until the scan says complete.

3. Click the Compare button to start the next process.

4. Files in the upper portion have been verified to "exist", Files in the bottom section were not able to be accessed. Very few files should be listed in the bottom section when the Compare scan is complete.

5. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower section to select them. Right-click on the file and use the Option Rescan screenshot.

6. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then it will be removed from the list (to reduce the number of identified files) screenshot

7. Click the Make a Log of what was found button, and post the log here in this thread using Add Reply to receive further instructions.

Now please check the copies of HijackThis that you have downloaded. If you downloaded according to the directions in my previous post, then you should have the newer version where you downloaded to. If not, then you will need to follow my instructions in the previous post to make sure that you get the correct version of HJT.

Please find and install version 1.98.2 and scan making sure that you are using the new version and post a new log here in this thread with the other two logs I have asked for.

Good Luck!
dgosling, Thanks for responding. I downloaded the programs you asked me to to a disk, but I left all the instructions you gave me here at work, so I couldn't remember everything you said. However, I did remember you saying to run the getservices.bat and post the results here. I did that, and I'll post it below. I'll bring the instructions home with me tonight, so I can do the rest of the stuff you asked. However, being that I cannot connect to the internet, I probably won't be able to get back to you until monday. Thanks for your help! The following instructions need to be printed out or saved as you must disconnect from the Internet for the entire process to prevent reinstallation of what we are removing. They need to be followed very carefully step-by-step

Step #1

1. Click here to download and install Registrar Lite. Install, run, copy and paste this line to reglite's address bar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

2. Click the "go" tab. Find the: "Appinit_Dlls" key in the right hand pane and and double click to find the "Value" data. Report back the information in the Value Box of AppInit_DLLs, in your next post.

Step #2

1. Please Download the most recent version of CWShredder, from CWShredder.exe Download into it's own folder.

2. Check for Updates,

3. then fix anything that it finds.

Step #4

1. Download and Install Ad-Aware SE, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan

2.Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE

3. Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.

4. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window

1) In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:

Good Luck!
dgosling,

I did everything you told me to and here are my results. With reglite, I could not find the key "Appinit_DLLs". The only keys listed were: Current Version, Help, HTML Help, IT Storage, and Shell. Then there were two other Datas, ab default, and ab ofmain9.chm. I ran AdAware and it cleaned a lot of things up. As far as step 5, I did not have any software such as Twain-Tech, Keen Value, or eUniverse. I also did not find the files or folders twaintech.dll or twaintec.ini when I searched for them. At step six, I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, but there was no progams running. I ran hijackthis and checked everything you listed. I could not find any of the files that you wanted me to delete. There wasn't a file in C:\WINNT\system called "sereve.exe", however there was a "serve.dll". I didn't do anything with it, because I didn't know if I was supposed to or not. Sorry for being long-winded here, but I just wanted to let you know exactly what I did. Here is my hijack this post. Thanks a lot!

That log looks clean despite the fact that you couldn't find any of the files. Please download and merge the following program into your registry and then POST a new log to make sure you are clean:

Please download and open the following zip file. Double-click on the file inside the zip and when it asks you if you would like to merge the file into your registry, please answer yes. This will make sure all files are visible on your computer.

There are still a couple of entries in the log that should be removed

First of all you are running My Search Bar which has adware in it. It is your choice if you wish to keep it as it is not a really bad one. If you wish to remove it go to Start>Control Panel>Add Remove Programs and on the list should be My Search Bar, or My Web Search Bar, or My Search, something like that will be in the window. Choose Change/remove if you want to uninstall it.

1. Scan again with HijackThis (ALL WINDOWS CLOSED EXCEPT HJT)

2. Put a check mark beside each of the following entries in the HJT window

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O3 - Toolbar: My &Search Bar - {0494D0D9-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - C:\Program Files\MyWay\myBar\2.bin\MYBAR.DLL
<— only if you decide to remove it
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ComcastSUPPORT] C:\Program Files\Support.com\bin\tgkill.exe /cleaneahtioga /start
<– despite the fact that this is from Comcast there are security issues with it - it sends your information to it's server and collects it from your PC an unknown amount of information
O4 - Global Startup: Event Reminder.lnk = ?

3. Click 'fix checked'

4. REBOOT to finish removing the entries into SAFE MODE by tapping F8 repeatedly while booting up

5. DELETE the following file:
C:\Program Files\Support.com\bin\tgkill.exe

6. REBOOT into normal mode

7. please SCAN again with HJT and

8. POST a new log file here in this thread using 'Add Reply' to see if there is anything left to clean.

There are a few things you should do now to make sure you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.

2. Another cleanup that will help is to go to Start>Programs>Acccessories>System Tools> Disk Cleanup and put a check mark beside all the entries in the disk cleanup window that ask you what you want to clean. Clean all hard drives and all files. This will get rid of any malware that is hiding in the temporary folders.

3. Make sure that all are gone, by checking the folders that the Temporary Internet Files and Temp files are stored in. To do so use Control Panel > Internet Options(or right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Properties). Click Delete Files on the General Tab - place a check in the Delete all offline content box, then 'Clear History' and then press OK

4. Empty your Recycle Bin

5. You do not appear to have a firewall running and there are a few available for free that have excellent reputations:

Zone ALarm Free Firewall
Kerio Free Firewall

6. I think you may benefit from reading the article "How Did I Get Infected In The First Place" linked at the bottom of this post, for information on how to secure your PC from spyware/adware/malware.There are several small free programs mentioned there that help with securing your PC against this type of problem.
dgosling,
Thank you so much for your help. Everything seems to be working great! Here is my hijackthis log. I will do the rest of the steps you told me to do, and get a firewall. Thanks again!
