This issue may be closed or resolved. However, considering the problems source, and my limited knowledge, who knows? We'll see. The internet seems to be working so far, with no pop ups, the homepage is back to normal, and I researched and tested the virus scanner and no longer think it to be compromised… er… well… I'm still a little suspicious. I couldn't have gotten this far without you all being here though. I look forward to hanging around, learning, and eventually being able to help you in this endless fight. Sincerely, LisaDarln

Looks better but not clean ;)

Please do all the steps in the order they are listed
  • Have Hijack This fix all of the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and hitting fix checked. Make sure all browsers and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DSS] C:\WINDOWS\BBSTORE\DSS\DSSAGENT.EXE – Reason see here
    O16 - DPF: {15AD4789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://public.windupdates.com/get_file.php…8a29296baabe1d6

  • Click here, for instructions on how to enable hidden files and folders to be visible. After enabling, reboot into safe mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded

  • Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
    C:\Temp\
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content.

  • Find and delete the following:

    Files
    C:\WINDOWS\BBSTORE\DSS\DSSAGENT.EXE <—— File

  • Reboot back into normal mode

  • Rescan with HJT and post a new log here. Also please describe how your computer behaves.
Thank you Lappen, I figured I'd missed something.
How is the computer behaving? Before doing this everything seemed fixed except for my daughter's preschool games, which I couldn't get to run at all until I replaced or repaired the shell.dll. Before doing your most recent instructions, I could get her games to start and run briefly, then it would claim the disk drawer was open or there's something wrong with the disk. The disk drawer was always closed, so maybe it is the disk, but I'll try again later since we've changed things again. Here's the recent log.

The log looks clean now as far as I can tell.

How are your browser and computer behaving? Are you still having problems with the games?

If so could you try the games on another computer and see if the problem is with the discs or with the computer…

You also might want to do a full virus scan at one or more of the free virus checkers that are in that link.

To reduce the risks of getting this type of problem again look at the links in my signature. At least read this one >> How Did I Get Infected In The First Place?
Hello Lappen, The laptop is running fine as far as its main usage which is my husbands game and looking up topics concerning that game. I've tried several things this morning in attempt to get my daughters game (Elmo's Preschool) to run, but not with too much luck. It would work for a brief time, about 5 mins or so before once again giving the message of the disk drawer being open, or an error with the disk. This being her favorite, I still haven't checked the others. I've attempted to find information about it on the web, but it appears that the game is no longer supported, and out of stock in the few stores I checked. I'm thinking now it's maybe off the market, and from what I know of the game, that is possible. I had no luck with installing it on my husbands desktop. When I attempted to install it on mine, the computer froze. I rebooted it, and took some time to just browse the CD, including having McAfee check it. That DSSAgent is on the disk, and from the reading up on it that you previously directed me to, gave me another idea. I have my old Dell running Windows XP Home, as well as the parts needed, except speakers, but headphones work fine. I've disabled McAfee on it, since it will never be connected with the Internet, and I if this works will never again be used for anything but her stuff… (4 years old and have her own computer  ) I've installed Elmo's Preschool, unchecked the Brodcast option during installation. It's only been about 30 mins, but it's still going. Oops… she's tired now, so I'm going to go and continue with the testing. Wish us luck, and thank you again for all the assistance and information you've provided.
Good luck with the games :) Glad to help :D
