Hi, Internet access on my friend's computer was broken. I ran McAfee AnitiVirus, Spybot S&D 1.3, and Adaware. There were no viruses, but Spybot and Adaware cleaned up a lot of stuff. The computer can now access the Internet, but access is slow. The bigger problem is that every time I try to open a folder from the desk top, the message "Explorer has caused an error in PDF5B7E.DLL" appears and the folder will not open. I can't get to My Documents, My Computer, or even new folders I create. Internet access on the computer is up, but it is slow and the connection drops often. I couldn't run HiJackThis from a folder because I couldn't open any! I ran it from a Cd. I copied the log to diskette, but now my computer won't read the diskette! My friend's computer Internet Access wouldn't stay up long enough to complete a post. I will work on getting the log and will post it when I get it. Thanks in advance for any help you can give. RatherBGolfin
Great to hear from you Little Eagle!

I ran Adaware in Safe Mode and the dll error appears to be gone. Adaware didn't find anything, so I'm not sure what fixed it.

Here is the log.

When HijackThis is on your Desktop it will save the backups as Icons and can be confused with your other programs. It is best to have it in it's own folder.

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

3. Close ALL windows except HJT

4. SCAN with HJT

5. POST the new log in this thread using 'Add Reply'

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO YOUR COMPUTER'S HEALTH

When you have done that, delete the copy of hijackthis that you have on your desktop.
Hello RatherBGolfin,

Hi Little Eagle, I am traveling, so it will take a while to get everything in your last post done. I will send my friends the information, but I'm not sure how far they will get without more hands-on help. HiJackThis is in a separate folder called Tools that is on the Desktop. I thought this was OK as HJT is in its own folder. Is it just not good to have the folder on the Desktop? I'll be in touch. RatherBGolfin

Hello again. Web Rebates isn't cooperating in Add/Remove programs. A message comes up saying that it will be removed in a few minutes, but nothing happens. Should we just skip this for now? Thanks!
Hi Little Eagle,

I'm back in action. The new log is below.

The computer uses a dial-up connection and will only stay connected to the Internet for a few minutes.

A weird issue is that Norton Anitvirus was removed from the computer, but it still shows up in the Add/Remove program list. When you select to remove it, a message appears indicating that the program to remove the program can't be found. I looked for the Norton directory, but it is gone. McAfee Interenet Security Suite has been installed on the computer, but part of it won't install. When you try to install the other part, a message appears stating that Norton is still installed and that it must be removed. I think there is some clean up that needs to be done to get Norton off, but I'm not sure what it is. I don't know if this is messing up the Internet access or not.

Thanks again for you help.

I found some information on the Symantec site about removing Norton Anti-Virus when Add/Remove doesn't work. I will take care of that and let you know if it helps. Thanks!

One of the best features of Windows ME is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a
computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up in the System Restore folder.
Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account,
which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has
administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab.
If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

Win ME
To disable System Restore:

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the Performance tab, click File System, or press ALT+F.
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, click to select the Disable System Restore check box.
4. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
5. To re-enable System Restore, follow steps 1-3, but in step 3, click to clear the Disable System Restore check box.

Disable system restore.
Check your system for latest virus definitions with an online virus scan.
TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan

Check your system for latest trojan definitions with an Online trojan scan

Then re-enable System restore.

Not just for the virus that I don't see but for all that was cleaned out. ;)
