Ie Opens By Itself

Hello! I'm so grateful to have found your website. I hope you can help me. We started having problems with my computer on Tuesday (31 Aug 04). We have SBC Yahoo! DSL. Not sure if that matters. Operating system is Windows ME.

After reading a few of the forum messages, I downloaded Lavasoft's Ad Aware. That seemed to clean-up alot of junk on my computer. I also downloaded SpyBot, but I haven't had it "fix" anything. I couldn't find a definition of the problems it found and I was afraid I'd remove something that I needed.

I was hoping that would fix everything, but, it didn't. :(

After that, I ran HijackThis. Here is the log. I truly appreciate any help you can give me. :)

After sending my first message to the forum, I decided to turn off my computer last night. BIG mistake. This morning, it didn't want to turn back on. It kept shutting down before an image even got to the screen. After about 8 or 10 tries, I finally got it to come up in safe mode. I am not trying to get Ad Aware to come back up so I can restore what I, hopefully, quarantined last night. I'm hoping that makes a difference. This has happened to me once before, though. When I turned my computer off overnight during a bad thunderstorm. So, this issue may not have anything to do with the Ad Aware, Spybot, HijackThis software or the apparent hijack problem I'm having. Please do all the steps in the order they are listed

Uninstall Virtumundo from control panel >> add remove program if listed there

Reboot

Download LSPfix here: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Start the program and then check the I know what I'm doing box.

Move all instances of lspak.dll (and nothing else), to the Remove pane.
Click the Finish Button and reboot.

Find and delete the file only c:\windows\system\lspak.dll<<

After that Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content.



If possible try to download LSP fix and put the file on a floppy or cd.

If the PC that you are having trouble with doesn't have internet asscess.


Then post another log also what was you home page befor the hijack?

Little Eagle – thanks for the help! "Virtumundo" was not in the control panel, add/remove program list. I couldn't find it doing a file search on "vir*" Do I skip that step and go on to downloading LSPfix? Thanks! Susan :)

Before we get started on a long fix. You are running windows ME which allows you to move to a old restore point about a week before the infection. If you can remember when about blank started. See if you have a restore point about a week before that. To do that hit Start>control panel>Preformanceand Manintence>System Restore click restore my computer to an earlier time.

Tried that – the system won't let me restore to anything before the day it started (31 Aug). BTW – my "system restore" is in Start – Programs – Accessories – System Tools – System Recovery. I looked under the Control Panel, but didn't see a "Performance and Maintenance" there. Thanks! Susan :)

Close all Browser and Program Windows and have HijackThis fix the following by checking the box beside each and then clicking on Fix checked.

Then Download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder.

Under "items to clear" click all. Then click "clear selected items"



Download LSPfix here: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Start the program and then check the I know what I'm doing box.

Move all instances of lspak.dll (and nothing else), to the Remove pane.
Click the Finish Button and reboot.

Some of these files and folders might have the hidden atribute

My computer is a bit slow to start-up. And, I still have IE windows opening by themselves. I don't have a pop-up blocker on IE because I usually use SBC Yahoo DSL browser.

I noticed that the "01 - Hosts" entries are still there.


Download then unzip and run CWShredder to clean up clicking "FIX" to have it remove all it finds.

We have found that some of the CWS infections can be removed better from safe mode, rather than normal mode.
To get to safe mode use the F8 key while booting the machine. Detailed instructions from here :-

How to use Lavasoft's VX2 Cleaner plug-in

- Close Ad-Aware 6 build 181 and Ad-Watch (if running)
- Download the free VX2 Cleaner at http://updates.ls-servers.com/plvx2cleaner.exe
- Install the VX2 Cleaner
- Start Ad-Aware 6 build 181
- Go to "Plug-ins"
- Select the VX2 Cleaner plug-in and click "Run Plugin"
- If your computer isn't infected, click "Close".


If your computer is infected

- Select "Clean system"
- Reboot your computer
- Scan your computer with Ad-Aware
- Remove any VX2 objects detected
- Reboot your computer again
- Run a second scan to make sure the files have been removed from your computer
