Hi,
The computer I am working on is an HP Pavilion 522c, 2000 AMD Athlon XP, 256 mb memory, 60 gb hd. The problem I am having is my internet connection got hijacked by a dialer.LetToPhone. I used Norton antivirus 2004 and it found 35 threats. I followed the defaults to let Norton delete the threats, but it could not, so I followed further instructions to delete them via explorer. I was able to delete all but 12 of them because I could not find them via explorer search (I have show hidden files and folders checked). I can now get to the internet and display my home page okay but I am concerned about the threats still existing on my computer. The threats are adware.iefeats, adware.winshow, download.adware (I think I got rid of this) and dialer.LetToPhone (also think I got rid of this). I will post the log I have from using hijackthis. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide. Beverly Smoot

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

You are infected with this worm.

Please try these free online virus scans of your system:

Trend-Micro:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Panda:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

Etrust:
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

Choose fix or clean.

Let them remove any infections found. Reboot inbetween each scan.

After the last scan, reboot and post a new log file in this thread. :)
Thanks for your reply. I have so far scanned with housecall which found 21 infections. Rebooted computer as you suggested. Just finished scanning with Panda, which found 5 infections. Will reboot and scan with Etrust. Don't understand why Norton AV 2004 could find the infections but could not delete them? Doesn't give you a warm and fuzzy… Just wanted to give you an update, did not want you to think I was ignoring your help. Thanks so much. I really appreciate your being there. Will get back with you with the hijackthis log upon completion. Beverly
After the final scan with etrust, which found 3 infections, here is the hijackthis log. I might add that I did rerun Norton AV2004 and it found 15 at risk files it could not delete. Etrust deleted 3 of the 15, so that means I still have 12 at risk files somewhere on this computer, two of which are information.exe (which I thought I got rid of before posting to this forum - guess not). Hijackthis log follows: Again thank you in advance for your help. Beverly

Run Hijack This! and fix these items:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Update Protocols] updr32.exe

Reboot in "safe" mode. Use the link in my signature to tell you how if necessary.

Find and delete:

updr32.exe <— file
(use windows explorer to find)

Some malware files may be "hidden". Use the link in my signature to explain how to show "hidden" files if necessary.

Reboot in normal mode.

Interesting that the original virus I spotted is still there after all those scans.

Please do this, go here and learn how to turn system restore ON/OFF.

Then:

1. Turn system restore OFF and reboot.

2. Turn it back ON and reboot.

Rerun your resident virus software and see if most (if not all) of the "infected" files have disappeared.

If some files still linger, post their full path names (i.e. "C:\WINDOWS\system32\ps2.exe"). I have other tools available we can use to eliminate them.

One more thing… I see that you have "WildTangent" on your machine. That is classified as "spyware". An "optional" fix would be to go to:

Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, and remove it. Reboot afterwards to complete the process.

When you're all done, post a new log file. :)
Files that Norton Av found but cannot delete. Suggestion by Symantac security response is to use Explorer to find and delete manually. I have "show hidden files and folders" checked as well as "show hidden system files" but still cannot find the following files to manually delete. FYI…housecall, panda and etrust did not find these files in their scans. Also you instructed me to Run Hijack This! and fix these items: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Update Protocols] updr32.exe O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Update Protocols] updr32.exe Reboot in "safe" mode. Use the link in my signature to tell you how if necessary. Find and delete: updr32.exe <— file I did find the two entries as stated in 04 HKLM via hihackthis. I was unable to find updr32.exe to delete. Hope it is not still lurking around like the other ones I can't find. Is there a way to get to the DOS-prompt in XP and maybe I can find these files that way? I followed the remainder of your instructions without any problems. Thanks and will wait for your response. Please post a new log file. :)
Okay all files are deleted! I used the cut and paste of the full file to search for the files instead of me typing them, found them all and deleted them. Any standard suggestions on what to put in place to keep this from happening in the future would be appreciated. Here is the hijackthis log. Thank you so much. Beverly

Good work!!!!

The log is clean now!!!

GOD bless!!!

M68 :)

It looks like both your Windows and IE need upgraded tp SP1

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?" here:

http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

Download IE-Spyad here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck.qualys.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
(Personally, I'm NOT recommending SP2 for XP at this time)

Thank you so much for all your help. I will execute your suggestions to get this PC updated and protected. I am happy to know there are folks like you out there. God Bless You! Beverly Smoot :)
