Hello Brygold,

You have one of the more severe infections that we see these days. It will take several steps to remove this but we can clean you up without too much difficulty. This hijacker adds an extra service to run when windows starts and hides and deletes some files. There are a couple of small tools that need to be downloaded and let run and then the log file from them needs to be posted back here for further instructions:

The first thing I need you to do is download the file from here that will identify the name of the service that has been added:

Getservice.zip

Extract the file to the c:\ drive. Then navigate to the c:\getservices and double-click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up. Please paste the contents of that notepad as a reply to this post.
Here is the log you asked for. Sorry I am so late getting back to you…I have not been back to check this lately. I will be making regular check backs now. Bryan P.S. This virus also has taken over notepad - I can't run it unless another program opens it for me. Otherwise, I have to use Write. It is interesting looking at this. I know a little about computers, not a ton, but I can see of this junk that I need to get rid of. Also - I can't log into Hotmail - I am guessing because of that stupid cryptsvc. Anyway, thanks for your help - I will be anxiously awaiting your reply. You may want to print out these directions as the Internet will not be available. Read through all the instructions so that you can ask any questions now, before you disconnect from the Internet.

Before you do anything else, please scan again with HJT and see if it gives you a
<02 BHO> <— there should be an O2 in the log file with the name of a *.dll file that is controlling part of this infection. It may only have a long alphanumeric in curly brackets with no file but we need this to get rid of the infection. If you don't find it then I'm sure we'll find it later. If you do find one (it won't be one named "Acro…" as that is for Adobe Acrobat in case that one shows. If you do find it put it into the instructions below at the point where I mention it.

Please continue with the next step and if you run into any problems with the current one, just keep going through the list step by step. Just be sure to let us know what the problem was when you finally reply.

Step#1:

Please download and open the following zip file. Double-click on the file inside the zip and when it asks you if you would like to merge the file into your registry, please answer yes. This will make sure all files are visible on your computer.
http://www.davehigham.zen.co.uk/downloads/xphidden.zip

Step#2:

1. Please download About:Buster from here: http://tools.zerosrealm.com/AboutBuster.zip.

2. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster. Do NOT use it yet

3. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE

Step#3:

Please also download Registrar Lite for use later: Please download Registrar Lite and install it to C:\Program Files\RegLite\ . This is a registry editor that is very easy to use.

Step#4:

Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix

1. Click on start > control panel > administrative programs > services. Look for a service called . Double click on that service and click stop and then set the startup to disabled. Also write down the name and path of the file listed in the Path to executable field. This filename must be deleted below.

Step#5:

Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the follow processes if they exist:

winmm.exe>
netlu32.exe>

Step#6:

I now need you to delete the following files: (they may give you trouble but try)

winmm.exe>
netlu32.exe>

.
<02 BHO> <— there should be an O2 in the log file with the name of a *.dll file that is controlling part of this infection.
<04 startups>

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

Step#7:

Then close all programs and windows and run hijackthis. Put a checkmark next to each of these entries and click 'fix checked' button when ready (some may be gone after uninstalling some programs):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winmm.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\winmm.exe

Step#8:

In the next step we are going to remove a service that gets installed by this malware.

1. Open Registrar Lite and run it.

2. Copy and paste the bold text below into the address bar of Registrar Lite:(this is making a Registry backup for safety in case of error)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\

Go to File> Export and and save as (in the C:\Program Files\Registrar Lite (Reglite) folder):

1.) Winkey.reg (Save as type: regedit4 .reg type)
2.) Winkey.hiv (Save as type: Scroll to select-regetd32/WinAPI *hiv *dat files)

3. Copy and paste the bold text below into the address bar of Reglite:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó

3. Click Go

4. If O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó exists it will be highlighted in the left pane , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

5. Copy and Paste the bold text below into the address bar of Registrar Lite:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó

6. Click Go

7. If LEGACY_ O?’ŽrtñåȲ$Ó exists then right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

8. If you have trouble deleting a key. Then click once on the key name to highlight it and on the top menu choose Security, then Edit Permissions. Then make sure you are an Administrator and give yourself Full Control of that key. Then click on everyone and put a checkmark in "full control". Then press apply and ok and attempt to delete the key again.

9. If you have had to change the permissions on the keys in Registrar Lite then you will have to return them to the way they were. To do this please navigate to C:\ProgramFiles\Registrar Lite (Reglite) and double-click on Winkey.reg. It will ask if you want to merge this file with the registry, say Yes. Then double-click on Winkey.hiv and merge this file with the Registry. You have now returned the permissions to the way they were.

Step#9:

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.

Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so. Post the log file in your next reply

When it has completed move on to step 10.

Step#10:

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Name the file as fix.reg
Change the Save as Type to All Files
and Save it on the desktop

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HSA]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SE]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SW]

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process.

Step#11:

1. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and Scan again with HijackThis. We still have a few steps to complete but a log file at this time would be helpful.

2. Post both your log from About Buster and your HijackThis log here in this thread with any questions or problems that you have run into. There are still some steps that are necessary to clear out all of the malware. There will be necessary files that it has deleted that will need to be replaced.

Good Luck!
OK - I had some troubles, but I think (hope) things are pretty well cleared up.
The only real problem was my computer shutdown halfway through the second about:buster search. Thus, I was unable to gather a log for you. I can tell you it found about 40 .dll files and 2 or 3 .exe files. Unfortunately, they had been deleted so when I went through all the steps again, the log simply said No Files Found (or whatever). Other than that I got everything else taken care of.

One interesting thing: On reboot, I wanted to fix my notepad - something had compromised it. So I go into my start menu and see that it is going to some windows/system32 file. I click find target and it automatically jumps me to ACTMOVIE.exe, trying to trick me into running that program I suppose. Also, I found notpad.exe (no e) in the windows/system32 file (with the notepad icon). I am sure these are not supposed to be in my computer probably. Have not deleted them or anything yet, just thought I would let you know. I remember the time and date of when this little virus hit me - previously I ran a search for files created or modified at that date. I could do that again to look for more new files now that all of them are showing up if you would like. Here is my HJT log. Thank you so much for your help. Things appear to be working better now.

Sorry for the delay in answering you. I am sorry I missed dealing with your problem with Notepad. I suspect your PC rebooting when running About Buster was it choked on one of the bad files.

Step#1

There are 2 legitimate copies of Notepad on your PC one in C:\Windows and the other is C:\Windows\System32. The legit file is 64.5kb (66,048 bytes) in size and should have the same creation date usually when XP was first loaded. If neither of your files appear to be legit (same file size that is here) then there is a website that has a zip file containing the XP version of Notepad. The file is called Notepad_xp.zip and it is about half way down the left hand side of the page. Download it and copy it to both locations on your hard drive replacing the file that is there.

Step#2

Before deleting any of those odd files like notpad I would really appreciate it if you could zip them up and send them to us for testing by our Experts. (I should have done this before we used About Buster but better late than never). This is how we find the new variants and develop tools to fix them. So far we have three separate file sizes which the bad files seem to often be : 1) 56k; (57,344 bytes) 2) 35k; (35,840 bytes) 3) 21k; (21,504 bytes) though they could be any size. Please Search for and Find any of the files that you have found that you think are bad. Especially Notpad.
Then make a Zip file with them, so that it will go through the email servers and not get dropped as a virus, and send them by email as an attachment to : Click here for Address. Please also include a link to this post in your email.

Step#3

Start>Search for ACTMOVIE.exe. Right-click on it and check properties. I have a copy of that file on my PC in Windows\System32 called 'Direct Show Setup Tool'. Size = 4.00 kb ( 4096 bytes). Creation Date same as notepad seemingly when XP was loaded. So mine looks like a legit file, yours may not be, do a search for Actmovie and see what turns up. Direct Show is part of Windows but the fact that other files are compromised may need to be reinstalled. This specific infection also deletes some system files

Step#4:

Now we need to see if we need to restore some deleted files:

[*]Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program. This will restore the original deleted Hosts file.

Step#5:

[*]This infection often deletes some system files that need to be replaced. The most frequent one it deletes is shell.dll in Win2K or XP. In XP there are two copies of this file, one is Windows and one in Windows\System32. It does not delete the ones in Windows\System so it does not affect Win9x/ME. If you find it missing please copy the shell.dll from c:\windows\system32\dllcache into both \Windows and Windows\System32 . You may want to run System File Checker from Start > Run to make sure that alll system files are there. Merijn's Windows Files Click on 'WIndows Files' on the left hand side of the window.

[*]The other system file which is most frequently deleted is control.exe. Please check to make sure that you have this file and if not Please check for the existence of this file by going to to Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and examine where the file should be for your operating system. If the file is missing then download the appropriate file and place it in the proper place according to this information. The control.exe is more often deleted in Win9x/ME.

[*]If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file. Go here: Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing you Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy). Then click Start > Run > regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll" and press the OK button

Step#2:

1. Run an online antivirus scan at:

2. Trend Micro Online AV

3. Reboot

Step#3:

1. Scan again with HijackThis

2. POST your log file to see what is left to fix.

Hope This Helps
Hello again and thank you again for your help.

Following your instructions I zipped "notpad.exe" and sent it to your submissions. It was 64.5 KB so it may be the case that the file name was just changed. Actmovie.exe was the same as yours. Maybe I just accidentally clicked to quickly? I don't think so, but you never know I suppose. I restored shell.dll out of dllcache, control.exe was still there. There were some 158 infected files on my computer, I should have written them down for you, but cleaned them and there was no log file. Sorry about that. Most of them were in either HJT backups or System Restore. There were about 40 that were in a combination of either the root directory, windows, system, or system32.

I scanned with HJT and found no problems. I do however, have a few quick questions. I have a number of .dll files that still remain on my computer that I am suspicious about. Most of them are surely fine, but a number of them I have seen in my travels throughout these boards, HJT, SpyAssasing, deleting BHO's out of regedit, etc. Here are the names of the most familiar suspects:

winampa (config. settings - created 8/28 - haven't used winamp in a long time)
xjdjw.dll created 8/26
addzg32.dll created 8/26
mezcz.dll created 8/17 - almost positive i have seen this as the file that puts in a BHO

I guess really my main concern is I seem to have a lot of very oddly named .dll, text, and executable files in my windows folder that have been created within the span of my getting this virus. I guess if they are in here but nothing calls for them, they don't hurt. However, I wouldn't mind getting rid of them and if I can do something to help you understand these viruses better, I would be all for it. Here is my HJT log. If I can do anything else to help, please let me know.

Bryan

Hi Your log is clean!
I suspect that you are right about that group of files. The steps to take to identify those files is to use system file checker with your Windows CD to check for changed system files. Having installed SP2 can be a problem because a lot of the files will have changed but they should all have the same date and time for the SP2 files. To use system file checker, insert your WIndows CD and go to Start > Run and type sfc /all into the run box and allow it to check your files. Some of course will have changed because of windows update, but you should be able to tell ones that are bad by weird dates or sizes or both.

You should check the properties of each and every file that you are suspicious of. Time consuming I know but with this infection if everything isn't removed it will come back when you have rebooted a few times.

How we usually identify them is by using several websites with information about specific files and for dll's we often use the DLL checker at microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?…nfo.asp&SD;=msdn
Another location for dll files where you can download some files to replace yours is
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/index.shtml

For any other file we use Google as one of our main sources of information together with the properties of the file. To use google enter the name including the file extension. If it comes up with unknown file then very likely it is bad and I would delete if I were you. If you get a few results back have a look at them, usually they will be HJT logs by other forums and you may find out how they dealt with that specific file which should indicate how you should deal with it.

winampa (config. settings - created 8/28 - haven't used winamp in a long time)
I would definitely delete the following files and any files with the same name but
different extension. They are bad.

I have two files called winampa - one is the backup in prefetch and the other is
the application 33.0 KB (33,792 bytes) created and modified last December same date and time for each. This file is a favorite of the hijackers to infiltrate and I would be inclined to uninstall it, search for and delete the remaining files and then go to windows update and download and install a fresh copy of it.

xjdjw.dll created 8/26
addzg32.dll created 8/26
mezcz.dll created 8/17

If you have any questions or want to post another log file once you have done the house cleaning, please feel free to post. Some essential housecleaning:

1. You should clean out System Restore because other programs are unable to clean any files in the backups. All Restore Points will be lost when you do this but they are probably infected anyway.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Another cleanup that will help is to go to Start>Programs>Acccessories>System Tools> Disk Cleanup and put a check mark beside all the entries in the disk cleanup window that ask you what you want to clean. Clean all hard drives and all files. This will get rid of any malware that is hiding in the temporary folders.

3. Empty your Recycle Bin

4. Double Check the following folders to make sure they are empty:
(go to C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temp\ folder)
and C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\)

5. You may find that you have to repeat the steps a couple of times.
Hello again. I have been busy picking through my windows and system32 folder with a fine tooth comb. I have deleted a LOT of files - keeping track of each one. I still have a lot to look through. I am getting tired and thus very liberal about my deleting and I don't want to get sloppy so I am going to stop for tonight. Do you want me to save any of these for you to look at? A lot of .EXE files and .DLL files. Also, I have not deleted any of these yet, but I have a bunch of wierd .txt files that have -HSA attributes. Are these ok to delete? When I open them they are all written in ASCII. Thanks so much for your help. Here is what I have found thus far with only about 1/4 of my system32 looked at. Bryan Deleted: in c:\windows xjdjw.dll control.cfg - (0 bytes?) d3ya.exe addzg32.dll mezcz.dll appzi32.exe zdnvb.dll appet32.exe alnvh.dll cjinw.dll slrundll.exe - not sure about this one in system32 eltui.dll bhlln.dll appsg.exe mfcat.exe uncxl.dll d3tr32.exe nxisw.dll apiil32.dll syszw.dll atleq.exe sysv32.exe ipaq.exe apioc.exe rvukw.dll msbe.dll -eXact advertising zipped if you want me to send mscd.dll -eXact advertising zipped if you want me to send nvms.dll -eXact advertising zipped if you want me to send sysgq32.dll ipnd32.exe ienm.exe javanp.exe d3os.exe cleaner12.exe atlcb.dll jstxf.dll sysff.exe As i said i am not very far into system32 and have already found all of this. let me know if you want me to start "collecting" these for you. Anything I can do to help you help others…. Bryan
One more thing - I found some nasty sites in my "trusted sites" under security in internet options. might have people check that after all this is said and done. then again - it may not ever matter.
I am checking the list of files right now will get back to you - yes I would like at least some of them but I will tell you which ones from this list
those sites in your trusted zone NEED TO BE REMOVED - they have access to your PC! This is one of the hazards of this infection it adds porn and other sites to your Favorites as well as entries in the trusted zone. One question about the files are they all the same size or varying sizes, if varying would appreciate knowing the different ones ( as long as it's not too much trouble). I know ppl who are looking for files to test am contacting them.
another question do you have a Zip utility besides the built in one in XP? If you don't, each will have to be sent individually zipped. That is OK with me but just more work for you
The files I have listed are the files I have deleted. Tonight I will compose a list of the rest of them. I do not have a compression utility at the moment, but winzip is only a click away. I will put all of the files you want in a folder and zip it up for you. Most of the .exe files were 12 kb, most of the .dll files are 55.5 KB. The strange text documents are either 12 KB or 3 KB. What should I do about those .txt documents that are all wierd? THey are hidden, system, archived files, very very suspicious, written in ascii. Let me know what you would like me to do. Bryan
Hi Bryan I would appreciate those ASCII files as well you never know what they are - they might be integral to finding a quick fix. There is a zip utility built in to XP. It is available form the right-click>send to > compressed file that will make you a zip file which you can then right click and put a password on it. Unfortunately the email servers require the malware zips to be passworded or they delete them. Just send me a pm with the password in it. Then you can send the zipped file as an attachment to me at: [removed] Once you've sent them we can see what needs to be removed still and get you cleaned up. thanks for helping out Dorothy
