Hi and welcome to the forum. :D

Step #1

Please download and run Spybot & AdAware SE . Then follow the instructions in the link below to run.

Spybot Tutorial

AdAware Tutorial

Step # 2

Please do an online scan,

Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Reboot and post a new HiJackThis log.
Thanks for responding! No problems wit Step #1: I updated to AdAware SE and turned on Tea-Time per the Spybot Tutorial (also added Spyware Blaster). Cleaned out 23 items.

Step #2: the online scan stops at about 14,000 files (tried it 4x.) I downloaded PC-cillin, but it wants to remove my NAV so I have not gone through with it.

Here is current hjt log:

The please do an online scan at Panda Online Virus scan , link below.
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co…n_principal.htm

Then post a new log please
Hi Siggyx,

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [HcTSC] C:\WINDOWS\TSC.EXE

and

C:\WINDOWS\TSC.EXE

were not there. I think they may have been associated with an attempt at housecall.

Neither houscall nor the panda activescan complete…they both seem to get hung at

C:\I386\MSOBSHELL.DLL I left panda going overnight and it didn't finish, but the 680180.net pop-ups have stopped.

Please boot to safe mode(tap f8 while bios loads) then scan again with hijackthis and put a check beside these lines and choose FIX. O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSN Manager] C:\WINDOWS\System32\cvss.exe You can also put a check beside all of the 016 lines as they are activex files and will be reloaded if and when you visit those sites again Then while still in safe delete this file. C:\WINDOWS\System32\cvss.exe Reboot and post a new log. How is it running?
Done, and log follows. Things seem to be running fine: no pop-ups on MSIE and other processes no notable problems.

Looks good :D

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. In my signature below is also a tutorial on how to harden IE, a good read and very helpful to stop these things in the future. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on.

Safe Surfing. :D
Thanks Mate. Go down to the river and throw a few rocks at the US for me if you're actually in Cornwall, we need a good waking up. I will add those prophylactics that I don't have. I have always done the AdAware and Norton routinely, and I think I know at which careless click this all began, but I have learned much through this thanks to you and TC in general (a donation is forthcoming). A question; personally I like to support Mozilla and I use Firefox; this MSIE snafu has helped me encourage my family who share this machine to the same conclusion, but are we less at risk via Firefox–if so, is it simply because the evil-doers haven't turned their attention in that direction? Best regards and thank you again. :ef (latin)
Firefox and Mozilla are much safer alternatives at the present time. Very few drive by hijacks have been developed for them yet. I say yet because you are correct in your assumption that they will be eventually. The reality is that IE is the big boy on the block and these evil people that write this crap want the most bang for thier buck. Ok that said I would go with Mozilla or Firefox. The main danger with anything is be very careful what you download and please never get a progam like Kazaa on your system as they are gateways to hell. Hope that helps. PS Threw a rock need to work on my arm strength as it only made it 1/2 way across the St. Lawrence ;)
