Explorer Uses 98% Of Cpu When Opening Folders!

When I try and open folders - mainly folders containing mp3 and other media files - XP slows way the heck down and in TaskManager explorer.exe shows that it is using 99% of my CPU. Also when I try and uninstall certain video files, a message appears saying that the file is already being used by another process and therefore cannot be deleted.

I know next to nothing about this stuff, so ANY help would be greatlt appreciated.

* I ran HijackThis and here is the log:

Thanks
Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. Since Temporary folders are emptied now and then (the files are DELETED), it would not be a good idea to have your backups there. Those backups would be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

3. Close ALL windows except HJT

4. SCAN with HJT

5. POST the new log in this thread using 'Add Reply'
Okay. here is the log once again. I have installed and run numerous anti-this and that programs, but to no avail. ANY and ALL help would be beyond appreciated…

Did what you suggested, and same troubles. I notice 2 svchost.exe's - is that anything to be suspicious of?

I restarted in safe mode, and ran Spybot SD, Ad-aware, and CWShredder but everything checked out clean.

Hope you can help

Well all we could see is:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\defrag.exe

Defrag running or hung up in the background certainly could slow a system down.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauclt.exe running

If this machine is trying to download SP2 in the background, THAT can slow it to a crawl also. Why it showed in just the one log I have no idea.
You could have him turn off AutoUpdates (right click My Computer, Properties, Automatic Update tab) and see if that helps.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm
So I tried what you suggested as far as disabling AutoUpdate and even installed avast! (which never finishes scanning - always gets caught on "wmv8ds32.ax"), but I am still having the same troubles…

Whenever I try and run winamp, quicktime, WMPlayer, or try to open any folder containing Mp3's my cpu usage sky-rockets up to 100% and whatever application I am attempting to use goes up to 96-99.

Restarted in safe mode and scanned with everything out there, and found nothing.

Cannot uninstall certain programs, or remove certain .avi files.

I have spent more time looking for answers to this problem than I can stand!

You can see my frustration…

Hi LittleEagle, if I may offer some assistance. You still have automatic updates running, you may want to connect to the internet and leave the computer alone for awhile, let it finish updating before you try running other apps. This could take a very long time if you are on a dialup connection, let it go overnight. It is likely that the updates processes are eating up allot of your CPU cycles but you need the updates so just let them finish before you do anything else. If you still have the problem after the updates finish, try the following. These are not malware, winamp is liikely the reason some audio files are locked and may be conflicting with other media players or even itself if you try to start another instance of it. Shut down all programs with a placeholder in the taskbar, run HijackThis and mark the following lines. Click "Fix Checked" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinampAgent] C:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exe O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE This one also if you don't use the Qucik Time toolbar icon O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime Reboot your computer. How do things work now?
Hello again,

Did what was last recommended and a few happened/ didn't happen:

I let Windows update run overnight, but downloading froze @ 33%. This happened on two occasions.

Ran HJT and fixed suggested lines. I can now at least access folders that I could not before, but when trying to open Mp3 files, Explorer.exe begins using 99% of the cpu.

I tried to uninstall winamp, but uninstallation freezes about halfway through.

Spybot SD, adaware, CWShredder, BHOdemon all tell me that my computer is healthy, but I beg to differ…

It looks like you have a few problems.
Lets fix the explorer hang first.
Do a search of your computer for the following files and check their size. There should be copies of them in C:\Windows\System32 and perhaps other locations.
wmv8ds32.ax 273 kB
wmvds32.ax 252 KB
Let us know where you find these file and what size they are.

Next, boot into safe mode (tap the F8 key as the computer boots).
Go to Start>Run and type the following in the box and then click ok
%tmp%
In the folder window that opens, delete everything.

Next go to Start>Control Panel>Internet Options
Click to:
Delete Cookies
Delete Files (check the delete offline content box)
Close the internet Options box with ok.

Reboot normally.

Do you have a cable internet connection? How is your connection speed?
