I am not really a nu-b, but am technology challenged. I run XP. Use Ad-aware and Spybot S & D regularly, as well as a hardware firewall/router. On startup, I get an error message about Wild Tangent.dll being missing, even though I've done all I know to remove it. It's not showing in my program files….also 'puter seems a little slower than it should. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

redtruckmomma Thanks for sending your HijackThis logfile. It is being analyzed now. I'll be back to you soon, probably later today. Thanks daveai
redtruckmomma – Thanks for sending us your HijackThis log. The analysis shows a Huntbar/Wintools infection in additon to the WildTangent.

Go ahead and print these instructions, or save them to your desktop, to help keep track of the steps.

To start, allow yourself to view "Hidden files". OpenWindows Explorer and go to "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" then click on the "Show Hidden Files and Folders” option, and un-check “Hide extensions for known file types” and “Hide protected operating system files” options. Then click the “Apply To All Folders” button.

Next, please move your "HijackThis.exe" out of temp files and into a newly created folder (such as C:\HJT) to ensure that backup files are reliably saved. We're going to clean out the tempfiles as part of this fix. If HijackThis is not moved, and we need to use its backup files, you will not be able to. Please take care of this now.

Once the HijackThis.exe file is moved, we are ready to begin with the general cleanup.

1 – Reboot into Safe Mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?).

2 – Click on "Start" => "Control Panel" => "Administrative Tools" => "Services". Look for a service called "Wintools for IE Service" => Double-click it to open, then click on the Stop button and change the "Startup type" to Disabled. Do not worry if the service is not listed.

3 – Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once => Click Task Manager => Click the Processes tab => Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes => Scroll through the list and look for any of the following: "WtoolsA.exe", "WToolsS.exe" and "WSup.exe". If you find any of the files, click on them, and then click End Process. Exit the Task Manager when done.

4 – Next, use Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to remove any of the following malware that it finds:

Web Search Toolbar
Win-Tools Easy Installer (may be multiples)
any other Wintools entry you see
and WildTangent entry you see

5 – Now, open a command prompt by clicking on "Start" => "Run" and type in "cmd" and click on "OK". At the prompt, type regsvr32 /u /s "C:\Program Files\Toolbar\toolbar.dll" (Quotation marks must be typed in on the preceeding command) then press . Type exit to close the command prompt window.

6 – Run HijackThis, from it's new location, press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, and click fix checked.

7 – Now use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\ <– this folder
C:\Program Files\Toolbar\ <– this folder
C:\Program Files\WildTangent\ <– this folder

8 – Next, clean out all the temporary files and cookies on your system. Go to Start > Run and enter: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Check these three boxes and then press ok to remove: Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin.

9 – To prevent any remnants of the problems hiding out in your restore files, please disable Windows System Restore, then reboot, then re-enable Windows System Restore by following the instructions at: "How to turn off or turn on Windows XP System Restore"

Now we'll take another look at your system.

Please run HijackThis to create a new logfile. Repost it here, and if you had any problems with the steps outlined above, please let us know what they were. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.

Thanks
daveai
Thanks for all you help. I ran the fixes that you recommended and had the following issues:
Under number 5, the command prompt and the instructions regsvr32, etc…got an error response stating no DLL name specified. I just exited out of the command prompt.

Under number 7, it would not delete the C:\Programfiles|Toolbarr because it would not delete the cursors.

Under number 8 – Windows could not locate cleanmgr.

Here is the new log:
(By the way, I seem to have been taken over by pop-ups since the first log was posted. I use the Google toolbar to limit them as much as possible and my count went up by 1500 since just yesterday of the ones blocked and have LOTS still getting thru. Is it possible I've been hijacked again in the meantime?!? YIKES!!!)

Thanks again for all of your help!
redtruckmomma – Thanks for your reply and new HijackThis log. The analysis shows several new infections have surfaced. Good job getting rid of Wintools!

Go ahead and print these instructions, or save them to your desktop, to help keep track of the steps.

Also, you have somehow reverted to an old version of HijackThis. Please download the latest version of HijackThis(v1.98.2) and unzip it to a permanent folder such as "C:\hjt".

1 – Reboot into Safe Mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?).

2 – Next, use Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to remove any of the following malware that it finds:

AM Server' and 'POP'.
404Search
Midaddle

3 – Run HijackThis, from its new location, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {01C5BF6C-E699-4CD7-BEA1-786FA05C83AB} - C:\Program Files\CxtPls\CxtPls.dll

And, this is an optional fix:

Office Startup Asistant is an optional item that if checked, will eliminate a known resource hog. You will still be able to start Office components from the Start menu. This is the item to fix in HJT:
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, and click fix checked.

4 – Now use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\pcs\pcsvc.exe <– this file

imgtrap.exe <– this file (use Start > Search to find it)

C:\Program Files\404Search\ <– this folder
C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate\ <– this folder
C:\Program Files\CxtPls\ <– this folder

5 – Next, clean out all the temporary files and cookies on your system. Use Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Check these three boxes and then press ok to remove: Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin.

6 – Reboot normally, and let's take another look at your system.

Please run HijackThis to create a new logfile. Repost it here, and if you had any problems with the steps outlined above, please let us know what they were. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.

Thanks

Thanks again!!!
Pam
Pam – Thanks for your latest HJT log. We are making good progress, but there are still a few entries from your last log that didn't get cleaned out. I do not see any new infections, however :)

We'll clean these out again, then give your system a "good scrubbing" with AdAwqare, Spybot, and an online virus scan..

1 – Reboot into Safe Mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?).

2 – Next, use Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to remove any of the following malware that it finds:

404Search

3 – Run HijackThis, from its new location, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank

O2 - BHO: Search404 Class - {53C330D6-A4AB-419B-B45D-FD4411C1FEF4} - C:\Program Files\404Search\404Search.dll (file missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sHNI.exe] C:\documents and settings\ted\local settings\temp\sHNI.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [aPLvm.exe] C:\documents and settings\ted\local settings\temp\aPLvm.exe

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, and click fix checked.

4 – Now use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

C:\documents and settings\ted\local settings\temp\sHNI.exe <– this file
C:\documents and settings\ted\local settings\temp\aPLvm.exe <– this file

5 – Next, clean out all the temporary files as follows. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to "C:\documents and settings\ted\local settings\temp\", then use "Edit > Select All" to highlight the folder contents, and then press the "Delete" key, and answer "yes" to the prompt.

6 – Reboot normally, and let's run some general scans:

After checking yourself against the following instructions, run AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy:

Please see How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware for instructions on how to download, install and then use this software. Be sure to update your definitions before this run.

Please see How to use Spybot to remove Spyware for instructions on how to download, install and then use this software, which may catch things that Ad-Aware misses. Be sure to update your definitions before this run.

Then, run the Housecall On-Line Virus Scan from Trend Micro, and clean any problems found.

Then, run the online trojan scan at: http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/ and delete any problem it finds.

Whew :) Finally, reboot a last time and run HijackThis to create a new logfile. Repost it here, and if you had any problems with the steps outlined above, please let us know what they were. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.

Once your system is clean, I'll offer some suggestions for preventing future malware infections.

Thanks
daveai
I am so grateful for all of your help. Here is my latest HJT log. Just to be up and up on the absolute latest, I uninstalled both of the versions I had of Spybot S & D and Ad-aware and re-installed them, too. I used the tutorials that you recommended, but the Ad-aware version I downloaded is SE (I guess 6 isn't available any more). Besides those two, I run Norton System works regularly and have a hardware firewall/router (Netgear FVS 318). This is my home pc and I also have a work pc that runs Windows 98 on the same internet connection. Other than it being slow and old, it doesn't seem to have the issues that this one does. My 12 year-old once upon a time visited porn sites and I got hijacked so badly that I ended up re-formatting the whole darn thing. I'd be typing an email to my boss (I'm a church secretary, so my boss is my pastor) and up would pop a terribly explicit website right in the middle of everything. . Anyway, that's all gone now, and it's just the run of the mill annoying stuff instead of terribly embarrassing. Now that I've bent your ear (eyes :D ) long enough, here's the log, and once again, MANY THANKS!!!!
Pam

Hello redtruckmomma

Thanks for the kind words. It's a pleasure to help :)

I have some updated links and instructions for AdAware below. And, I'll add some suggestions for additional protection for you system.

The firewall and antivirus and Norton are all excellent. I'd also recommend installing these three free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE/Spyad.

As to your latest logfile:

There are still some HJT entries that concern me…but fewer and fewer every time :) I'd rather be paranoid and keep at it than drop it and have some of this stuff re-spawn on you. Hang in there…we are almost done.

Before you start, ensure that Spybot S&D "Tea Timer" is not running for the duration of this fix. See this link for instructions.

1 – Reboot into Safe Mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?).

2 – Run HijackThis, from its new location, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - (no file)

These are the entries that keep coming back. The filenames are random, which is bad. If you know what these are, then keep them and let me know. If you do not, know these, then delete them (again):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [aPLvm.exe] C:\documents and settings\ted\local settings\temp\aPLvm.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sHNI] C:\documents and settings\ted\local settings\temp\sHNI.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sHNI.exe] C:\documents and settings\ted\local settings\temp\sHNI.exe

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, and click fix checked.

2 – Then while still in Safe Mode use "Start > Run" and type in "%temp%" (without the quotes). Delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder (use "Edit > Select All" then press the "Delete" key).

Then, Delete/Empty your Temporary Internet Cache completely. Close all instances of Outlook and and Internet Explorer, then use "Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab" and click the "Delete File" button. When prompted place a check in: "Delete all offline content", then click OK.

Then, use Windows Explorer to clean out ALL the other temp folders on your system:

* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

Please let me know about any problems with the temp file deletes.

3 – To prevent any problem remnants from hiding out in your restore files, please disable Windows System Restore, then reboot, then re-enable Windows System Restore by following the instructions at: "How to turn off or turn on Windows XP System Restore"

4 – Please, run HijackThis to create a new logfile. You know the drill :) You can re-enable "TeaTimer" now, too.

Thanks again for hanging in there with us.
