Major Troubles

I've had all sorts of troubles, popups galore, no response, you name it.

I ran SpybotS&D and Adaware several times, ran CWShredder, then made sure all Microsoft Updates were installed and updated my internet security options based on some recommendations through a Wilder site.

CWShredder recommended that Windows Media Player be re-installed. Not being sure how exactly to do this, I just deleted the program.

I seem to have things somewhat stabilized, but the log doesn't look so good to me, plus I also seem to have some programs that I don't recognize when I look in the Control Panel, such as Bullseye? 404search? and others.

Any help is appreciated. Here's the log.

joek – Thanks for sending your HijackThis log. Your system has a number of infections, and this will take several steps to clean.

To start, allow yourself to view "Hidden files". OpenWindows Explorer and go to "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" then click on the "Show Hidden Files and Folders” option, and un-check “Hide extensions for known file types” and “Hide protected operating system files” options. Then click the “Apply To All Folders” button.

Next, move your "HijackThis.exe" out of temp files and into a newly created folder (such as C:\HJT) to ensure that backup files are reliably saved. We're eventually going to cleean out the tempfiles as part of the fix.

Okay, you have the Peper Trojan (among other problems) and we'll tackle that first. It is a very stubborn infection which requires two different tools to remove. Please follow these instructions in order:

1. Download Newuninst.exe.

2. Run it with an active internet connection.

3. Reboot to finish removing the entries it found.

4. Run the tool a second time (again with an active internet connection).

5. Reboot to finish removing the entries it found.

For the second tool:

1. Please Download PeperFix.exe,

2. Start the tool and click Find and Fix.

3. Reboot to finish removing what it found.

4. Run the tool a second time (again with an active internet connection).

5. Reboot to finish removing the entries.

Then, run the Housecall On-Line Virus Scan from Trend Micro, and clean any problems found.

Then, run the online trojan scan at: http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/ and delete any problem it finds.

Now, let's take another look at your system.

Please run HijackThis to create a new logfile. Repost it here, and if you had any problems with the steps outlined above, please let us know what they were. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.

Thanks
daveai
Dave,

Thanks for the help. I followed the steps outlined as religiously as possible, with the following outcome:

1) Newunint.exe seemed to run fine - it takes about 10 seconds - sound right
ran it twice and rebooted as instructed

2) Peperfix.exe seemed to run fine - 1 file found first time, did find and fix
-0- files found second time, reboot after each

3) On-line VScan seemed to run fine - found 4 items, but it wouldn't let me delete them and said they were running.

Dave, Thanks. By the way, I've since run Spybot & Adaware several times each, rebooting after each run. Should I make a new log, or do you want to just work with the existing one? Joe
Thanks joek I've already worked up a post based on the last log. It's being reviewed now, and should be posted tonight or early tomorrow. For the time being, please stop fixing stuff…I need to follow the changes carefully. You have ALOT of infections, and some of them might try to hide or re-spawn. Additional AAW or Spybot runs might mask that from us. Also, as you'll see in my next post, it's IMPORTANT to move HijackThis.exe out of TEMP into a permanent folder. Take a look at my first post back to you. Once you do that, please go ahead and send me a new HJT log. I'll be back to you asap with the next group of instructions. Thanks daveai
joek – I'm back. Go ahead and print these instructions, or save them to your desktop, to help you keep track of the steps.

1 – Before we can proceed, it's IMPORTANT for you to move your "HijackThis.exe" out of temp files and into a newly created folder (such as C:\HJT) to ensure that backup files are reliably saved.

We're going to clean out the tempfiles as part of this fix.
If HijackThis is still running from "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\HijackThis.exe", and we need to use the backup file, you will not be able to. Please take care of this now.

Once the HijackThis.exe file is moved, we are ready to begin with the general cleanup.

2 – First we "hobble" Twain-tech. Click "Start" and then "Run" and type the following command which unregisters the software:

regsvr32 /u c:\winnt\twaintec.dll

3 – Then, use Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to remove any of the following malware that it finds:

Twain-tech
Active Alert
Internet Optimizer
AM Server
POP and/or POP!
Midaddle
Lycos Sidesearch
Web Offer
Bullseye
404search

4 – Run HijackThis, from it's new location, press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Note taht some may already be gone from earlier AdAware/Spybot runs.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchAssistant = ,

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, and click fix checked.

5 – Please reboot into Safe Mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?), and use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

C:\WINNT\twaintec.dll <– this file (may already be gone)
C:\WINNT\system32\vrnwwe.exe <– this file
C:\WINNT\alchem.exe <– this file

C:\Program Files\Web Offer\ <–this folder

6 – Next, clean out all the temporary files and cookies on your system. Go to Start > Run and enter: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Check these three boxes and then press ok to remove: Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin.

7 – Reboot to normal mode, and we'll take another look at your system.

Please run HijackThis to create a new logfile. Repost it here, and if you had any problems with the steps outlined above, please let us know what they were. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.

Thanks

JOE
joek – Thanks for sending you HijackThis log. You're definately making progress. There's ALOT LESS malware on your system. Nice work on getting rid of Wintools :)

But, Twain-tech and IEPlugin are still there, and the pesky IMISERV virus has appeared.

Also, I can see you are having difficulty moving your "HijackThis.exe" out of "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\" files and into a newly created folder (such as C:\HJT) to ensure that backup files are reliably saved.

It might be easier for you to simply create a new directiory called "C:\HJT" and download and unzip a new copy to the new folder.

Sorry to be a nag about this, joek, but it makes me nervous to see anyone running HJT (which modifies your registry) without backups, which will surely be lost when we clean out your temp files.

Okay, on to the fix:

Go ahead and print these instructions, or save them to your desktop, to help keep track of the steps.

To start, allow yourself to view "Hidden files". Open Windows Explorer and go to "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" then click on the "Show Hidden Files and Folders" option, and un-check "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files" options. Then click the "Apply To All Folders" button.

1 – Reboot into Safe Mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?).

2 – Next, use Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to remove any of the following malware that it finds:

twain-tech
midaddle

3 – Run HijackThis, hopefully from its new location, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=

O2 - BHO: MxTargetObj Class - {0000607D-D204-42C7-8E46-216055BF9918} - C:\WINNT\mxTarget.dll
O2 - BHO: Band Class - {01F44A8A-8C97-4325-A378-76E68DC4AB2E} - C:\WINNT\systb.dll
O2 - BHO: Search Help - {E8EAEB34-F7B5-4C55-87FF-720FAF53D841} - C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\xYWpZM.dll

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [L.exe] C:\documents and settings\administrator\local settings\temp\L.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [o23U36T] masromon.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Win Server Updt] C:\WINNT\wupdt.exe

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, and click fix checked.

4 – While still in safe mode, use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

C:\WINNT\mxTarget.dll <– this file (may already be gone)
C:\WINNT\systb.dll <– this file (may already be gone)

C:\WINNT\system32\masromon.exe <– this file
C:\WINNT\wupdt.exe <– this file

5 – Next, use "Start > Run" and type in "%temp%" (without the quotes). Delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder (use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes").

Then, Empty your Temporary Internet Cache completely. Close all instances of Outlook and and Internet Explorer, then use "Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab" and click the "Delete File" button. When prompted place a check in: "Delete all offline content", then click OK.

Then, use Windows Explorer to clean out ALL the other temp folders on your system (navigate to the folder, use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes"):

* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

Be extra sure you clean out the "C:\documents and settings\administrator\local settings\temp\" folder. It contains several baddies.

Please let me know about any problems with the temp file deletes.

6 – Now, reboot normally, and run this battery of general scans to give your system a "good scrubbing". Please let me know if anything can not be cleaned by these utilities.

Whew :) Now, one last reboot, and we'll take another look at your system.

Please run HijackThis to create a new logfile. Repost it here, and if you had any problems with the steps outlined above, please let us know what they were. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.

Thanks
daveai
Dave,

Thanks for all your patience with me. I'm slow because I've got 2 jobs keeping me busy, but when I geta a chance I'm diligently trying to follow along with the procedures.

Before I post the new log, here are some notes on what occurred when I followed your last set of instructions:

- Folder Options was already set as you recommended
1 - Rebooted to Safe Mode
2 - Twain-tech and midaddle (neither was found)
3 - Removed recommended Hijackthis entries. All were found with the exception of the 04-HKLM \ Run: [o23U36T] masromon.exe
4 - Only the WINNT\wupdt.exe file was found. I deleted it.
5 - Deleted the temp folder thru the Start/Run/%temp% routine. I got a few warning messages related to deleting the following:

Folder Cookies
Folder History
Folder Tem Internet Files
IEC3.terp is "read-only"
VTHlp.cnt is "read-only"
VTHlp.hlp is "read-only"

Also cleaned out the other temp folders thru explorer as described. Directly under the Docs&Setting\Username\ Local Settings folder there were two files that looked suspicious, but I didn't delete them becasue I didn't know what they were. The file names were:

TempIadHide3.dll
TempWM-FUINS.bat

6 - Rebooted and ran Spybot version 1.3 - Fixed all problems, including some with names such as People on Page…, IE Plugin…, Akexa Related…, Appropos Media…, and vX2/F…
Rebooted again and ran Adaware version 6.0 - Fixed all problems, including a number reading People on Page…, IMIServer…, etc.
Rebooted again and ran Panda Active Scan and TrendMicro HouseCall. HouseCall made note of a few files that it said couldn't be cleaned, but then it seemed to clean them after all. I traced the file pathnames in Windows Explorer, and indeed the file names were not to be found. I guess they're OK.

Then I posted this email & log.

This is hard work. How do you do it?

Heya joek – Good to hear from you again. No problem with the pace we're keeping. Anyone working two jobs deserves lots of respect :) and slack  The logfile still shows a few problems, so I'm going to consult with some of the more experienced fixers before posting my next response. But, you've cleaned a ton of malware already and are doing a good job. And providing great detail on your posts back to us! That makes my work lots easier. I'll be back to you sometime tommorow. Thanks for hanging in there. daveai
I'm back. Thanks for sending the new HijackThis log. It looks much cleaner than I thought at first glance…we are down to just two suspicious files. :) Thanks again for the great detail on your last post to me.

First…your questions:

Deleted the temp folder thru the Start/Run/%temp% routine. I got a few warning messages related to deleting the following:
…
IEC3.terp is "read-only"
VTHlp.cnt is "read-only"
VTHlp.hlp is "read-only"

If you right click these files in Windows Explorer, and select 'Properties' and turn off the 'Read Only' box, you should be able to delete these. They don't google any info that tells me they are malware for sure…but axe 'em anyway.

Directly under the Docs&Setting\Username\ Local Settings folder there were two files that looked suspicious, but I didn't delete them becasue I didn't know what they were. The file names were:

TempIadHide3.dll
TempWM-FUINS.bat

Delete these, and let me know if you cannot.

This is hard work. How do you do it?

Heh…you're doing most of the work  I'm just an old techie who likes the analysis and problem solving. But, the nice feedback I get from folks like you make this alot of fun, and very rewarding actually.

On to our fix:

Go ahead and print these instructions, or save them to your desktop, to help keep track of the steps.

1 – Reboot into Safe Mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?).

2 – Next, use Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to remove this if it is there. If not don't worry.

BackWeb

3 – Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [o23U36T] nddund3d.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Z1s8RWf7V] wzcint40.exe

If you set this via Spybot S&D then leave it alone, otherwise fix it:

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, and click fix checked.

4 – While still in safe mode, use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

C:\WINNT\system32\nddund3d.exe <– this file

wzcint40.exe <– this file (use "Start > Search" to find it)

Please let me know about any problems with the file/folder deletes.

* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

Sorry to put you through this again, but better safe than sorry.

Please let me know about any problems with the temp file deletes.

6 – It wouldn't hurt to re-run the two online scans again.

Now, send me another log. You know the drill :).

Thanks for hanging in there. You are doing great.
daveai
Dave,

Back again for another round. I took all the steps outlined.

** Those read-only files are gone
** The TempIadHide3.dll file is deleted
** The TempWM-FUINS.bat file is deleted

In SAFE Mode:
- Backweb was not found
- Deleted the 3 entries noted in Hijackthis
- Deleted the nddund3d.exe and wzxint40.exe files
- Emptied the contents of temp folder using start/run/%temp%
- Emptied Temporary Internet Cache
- Cleaned out all other temp folder using Windows Explorer
- Cleaned out recycle bin

Shut down, rebooted, then immediately ran the Panda & HouseCall scans. Both came up clean.

Here's the latest log:
