I can't open anything without something hijacking my broswer! I think i've downloaded every anti-spyware program known to man and computer, but i'm fighting a losing battle; i can't do searches with google, i can't check my email, i can't do anything!! If it's possible, i think my laptop is going to crack under the pressure…i know i am!! Somebody please help me :(

P.S. Would the thing that's taking over my computer also be adding porn sites to my 'favourites' list? Because it's not me!!

Hi remmus!

I have merged your two posts to this post, please stay with this post until your problem is resolved.

Some of the suggestions from me you might have done already but in that case please redo them.

You have been infected by Coolwebsearch and some other things

Please download the latest version of CWShredder from here or here

If you are unable to download that file because of the Hijack, please post back. If you are able to get the file follow the instructions below.

Run it.
Check for update, if it needs to update please allow it to do so.

Click fix/next. Let it fix all if finds.
Reboot

Run it again (to be sure it worked)
Click fix/next. Let it fix all if finds.
Reboot

Do a virus scan here.
If you get report of files that can’t be cleaned / deleted please write down the filenames and locations and post that in your reply.

Reboot

After that go to windows update and download all critical updates.

After installing go back and download some more and repeat that until all updates are done.

Reboot

Then please do this since it’s better to use automated tools to get rid of the bad stuff use these 2 programs first before doing the final cleaning with HJT

First use Spybot S&D. (Version 1.3)
Spybot
Unzip, and update. Install the updates and run. Delete all that it marks in red.
Reboot

Then it’s time for Ad-Aware
Ad-Aware
Install and update by using the globe icon. Restart your computer and run Ad-Aware.
Press scan now and select drives and/or partitions to be scanned. When done select all and click next. Remove all checked items and then reboot your computer.

Please go to this page and read the instructions for how to configure Spybot S&D & Ad-Aware
How To Setup Spybot SD and Ad-Aware

Finaly you need to update your HiJackThis since you don’t have the newest version. (1.98.2) Download it from here:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip

Mirrors
http://computercops.biz/downloads-cats-14-10-10.html
http://www.subratam.org/?page=removal
http://www.zerosrealm.com/index.php?page=downloads

Unzip it to a permanent folder (suggestion C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe).
Run the newer version of HiJackThis (delete the old copy please) and post a fresh log here.

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log, Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents here as a reply in this topic.

Please post the full log that’s generated including the headers and the running processes
Hi Lappen, I've done half of what you said so far, but i'm kind of bogged down at the Microsoft updates bit, because i've never done it before, and apparently there's 50 new downloads  I did do the virus scan, and it came up with 102 infected files that couldn't be cleaned, and they were all infected with "TROJ KREPPER.Q" and all in "documents and settings/administrator/local" It'll take me a couple of days to do all the downloads, and i'll reply after i've done that! Thanks, Remmus
Ok, you really need the updates since otherwise you will be re infected as we clean… Post back when done with the updates and we will take it from there.
I've downloaded all the critical updates and a service pack, but now the browser hijacker has become too fast and i can't get into the windows update site anymore. I've updated and run spybot, aw-aware and hijackthis, but i still can't get into the microsoft update site. I think the "www.windowws.cc" hijacker thing is getting worse, it takes over absolutely everything.

I deleted two things from the Hijackthis scan, one ending in "about:blank" and a "www.windowws.cc" in an effort to get to the microsoft downloads, but it didn't work. They were the first two things in the Hijackthis scan. The "www.windowws.cc" one came back anyway.

Hi!

Since you managed to get all of the critical updates let's continue with this

Important: Create a folder to place HJT in (suggestion C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe).
When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary. If something goes wrong we need to have those files for backup, at the moment you seem to run the HJT file from within the Zip file please unzip it to a folder of its own

Then

Run cwshredder again

Reboot

Run cwshredder again

Reboot

Run spybot (see instructions above)

Reboot

Run ad-aware (see instructions above)

Reboot

Post a new HJT log

If you get stuck please post back here

Spoke too soon! A soon as i tried to open the updates page, www.windowws.cc was back, and has made itself comfortable as my homepage again. <_<
Lappen is on vacation so I am checking in.

You've got a Trojan that is making the rounds:

http://www.sophos.com.au/virusinfo/analyses/trojsmallju.html

Run Hijackthis, scan and check the box left of these numbered line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [romahere] C:\Windows\System32\matrixhere.exe
Comments: Trojan
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [uninstal] regsvr32 /u /s image.dll
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [romahere] C:\Windows\System32\matrixhere.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk = ?

I'm a little concerned about the 020 entry as that 14 character filename is unusual for a .TLB. But for now I'll research it so leave the line entry intact.

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: p1nv04bxt00wfy.tlb
Comments: upon consultation…check this one.

Also check any line entries for your webpage .cc pest that may have appeared since your last posted log and any BHO 02 entry that reappeared. If the O2 entry has reappeared make note of the path and filename and delete it in Windows Explorer as described below for the Trojan file.

With no other windows open click on fix checked button in Hijackthis.

Exit Hijackthis.

Reboot to SAFE MODE

Show HIDDEN FILES and folders

These necessary options are explained in FAQ's 8 and 9
on this page:

http://www.russelltexas.com/malware/faqhijackthis.htm

Open Windows Explorer: type the word explorer at Start/Run box and click OK:
(Note…if the Run button is absent, right button click on the Start button and left button click on the word explore.

Navigate down the folder structure in left hand window and then in the right window delete the following file:

C:\Windows\System32\matrixhere.exe
C:\Windows\System32\p1nv04bxt00wfy.tlb

Exit Explorer and empty the Recycle Bin.

Reboot in normal mode Windows and run Disk Cleanup: type cleanmgr at Start/Run. Scan all hard drives and check all categories at the end and click OK.

If you have any problems with Disk Cleanup completing…XP users can fix it here:

http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/DeleteOldFiles.htm

Next…download and run these two programs (Spybot S&D and Adaware) at the link below. Use Spybot first.

Most of the Internet baddies can be killed by a one-two punch with Spybot and Adaware assuming these three factors are achieved:

1. Latest version
2. Configured correctly for running options
3. New definitions from update feature

Chris has posted an excellent tutorial by dgosling on how to run Spybot S&D and also how to enable customized deep scanning functions for Adaware. Once you set these options they will be retained for future scans by Adaware.

Follow the directions in this detailed guide for Spybot and Adaware…print out the directions in the custom scan tutorial as a reference while you set these options for the custom setup of Adaware. These custom settings will be retained for future custom scans so don't go nuts thinking you have to do this every time you run it! It may take you five minutes to set them up, but it's worth it.

http://www.cjwdavis.co.uk/s-a.html

Please note the free Spybot 1.3 does have a slight bug…it detects some DSO exploits falsely. Hopefully an upgrade will fix this. The problem is not serious and should not deter people from using Spybot. Also note recent live updates may fail with a "bad checksum" error message unless you change the download server location.

See how to solve this live update issue for Spybot at:

http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm

Reboot and browse a bit, exit IE 6 and post a new Hijackthis log in this thread. Please do this even if you feel it is clean as this is beneficial for our classroom trainees and future researchers. Your help is appreciated.

Special Comments: After the final all clear is given by us you should flush your Restore Points for XP. That means disabling the Restore Point, rebooting to flush it, then re-enabling a new Restore Point. The reason why we need to do this is to purge the bad files hidden in System Restore which can't be cleaned by your antivirus programs.

See FAQ 12 here: http://www.russelltexas.com/malware/faqhijackthis.htm

Hi Texruss, I've hit a little snag in following the instructions you sent me; i went through and deleted the stuff from the Hijackthis scan, and went into safety mode and managed to delete the "matrixhere" file, but was told 'Cannot delete: Access Denied' when i tried to trash the 'p1nv…' file. And it says something about making sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use. When i rebooted, all the crap was back in the Hijackthis scan. I don't know what to do, do you have any more suggestions? Remmus P.S. I did the disk clean-up thing and managed to delete Internet Explorer.
Try right button clicking on the .TLB file and unchecking Read-only box. You may need to do that in Safe Mode and in Windows Explorer. Post back with a fresh log so we can see what's current. Hang in there. All the best, Texruss
Hi,

I managed to delete both the files this time, and did all the spybot and ad-aware stuff, and it all seems to be working okay! :D

When i did a virus scan that lappen told me to do, it came up with something called KREPPER.Q that couldn't be cleaned from my computer. Is that what i've been getting rid of, or is that something else?

Anyway, i think the "www.windowws.cc" thing is finally gone, thank you both so much for your help! Spyware's gone, it's very cool B) .

Remmus

Sorry so tardy in getting back to you…I've been cleaning up a computer for a terminally ill woman who has colon cancer that has spread to her lungs.

You've still got a virus….fix check this line:

O4 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe

Reboot to Safe Mode with Hidden Files enabled and delete that file in C:\Windows\System32 folder (may be in C'\Windows, but more likely in the System32 subfolder. Right button click on it if it resists deletion and remove the Read-only attribute in Properties.

Post back a fresh log.

All the best,
