I’m new to your site and your forums. I hope I’m posting this in the right place. My problems started with a hijacker. Here’s the quick background- After attempting to fight off the hijacker I removed McAfee Security Suite 2004 ver. 6.0 and installed Norton Internet Security 2004. I have downloaded and used both Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-aware using the custom settings by “dgosling” which I got from a link at the Dell site. Between the two, my scans now come up clean. I’ve got 2 issues remaining. First – After removing McAfee and Installing Norton my PC has slowed considerably. My restore points have been flushed; I have run both Disc Clean-up and Disc Defragmenter. When I run Task Manager I notice a sharp peak of CPU usage anywhere from 55 to 100% occurring approximately every 30-40 seconds. This pretty much stops me in my tracks whether or not I’m on the web, or using Word, Excel, etc. At this point it’s just a small aggravation as compared what I have grown accustomed to over the last 3 weeks, but I need help fixing it. Second- Not really a problem yet but when I run msconfig (normal start-up mode) under the start-up tab, one of my start-up items and its command are missing. The only thing there is a checked box and a location ( HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run ). I think this value was inadvertently removed while purging the registry of all things McAfee. How can I find out what it is and how I can rename it? I no longer have a registry back-up file. Dell Dimension 4600 Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.4 GHz 512 MB DDR SDRAM 80GB Hard Drive Windows XP Home service pack 1 Norton Internet Security 2004 I have also recently up graded to AOL 9.0 SE (not impressed with AOL’s idea of an upgrade). I am current on all my Windows and Norton updates. I will provide any additional information anyone might need for some resolve to these issues. Can anyone help with this? Thanks for your time and please go easy on me, I'm just a pup. nscalenut

Please Scan with Spybot Search and Destroy:

3. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D

4. Click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ and download and install the Updates.

5. Next click the button ‘Check for Problems’

6. When Spybot is complete, it will be showing ‘RED’ (RED) entries ‘BLACK’ entries and ‘GREEN’ (GREEN) entries in the window

7. Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED (RED) entries ONLY.

8. Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

9. REBOOT to complete the scan.

————————————————————————————————————–

Then Scan with Ad-Aware :

2. Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware

3. Go to Start > Programs > Lavasoft and click on AdAware 6 to open the program

4. Look at the icons on the top right of the page and click on the ‘world’ and let AdAware update the spyware reference list

5. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1) In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected:

*Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
*Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

2) Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select :

*Scan Within Archives
*Scan Active Processes
*Scan Registry
*Deep Scan Registry
*Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
*Scan my Hosts file

3)Under ‘Click here to select drives + folders’, choose:

*All of your hard drives

4) Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select:

*Include additional process information
*Include additional file information
*Include environment information
*Include additional object details

5) Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select:

6)Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:

*Unload recognized processes during scanning
*Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
*Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile

7)Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:

*Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

6. Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.

7. Click ‘Start’

*on the next screen choose ‘Activate in-depth Scan’ at the bottom of the page
*then choose:'Use Custom Scanning Options'

8. Click ‘Next’ and AdAware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically. .

9. Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘finish’

10. REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware found

Finally after running both Spybot SD and Ad-Aware, SCAN with HijackThis and POST your logfile in the same thread using ‘Add Reply’. Do not attempt to fix anything in HijackThis yourself!

—————————————————————————-

Here's how to post a Hijack This log

Download "HijackThis" here
When downloading, choose "save to disk" and NOT open!

Now create a new folder for it, C:\Hijackthis, for example.
After unzipping the file to C:\Hijack This, you'll end up with the file itself, which is Hijackthis.exe, and that's the one you'll need to doubleclick.'

When the program launches, hit the "Scan" button
When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, and save the log anywhere you like.

Now if you doubleclick the log file.Go to Edit > Select all, then to Edit > copy.
Now you've copied the entire text to the Windows Clipboard (this happens behind your back.)

Next, go back to this forum thread, and click "Post Reply".
In an empty area click your RIGHT mouse button, and choose 'Paste' from the context menu.
There's your Hijack This log.
Here it is-

Download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder.
http://www.igorshpak.net/software/3ssetup104.zip

Under Items to clear click all.
Followed your instructions.
Ran hijackthis checked and fixed the 02-BHO: (no name) item.
Rebooted.
Downloaded System Secutity Suite, put into folder, selected all boxes in items to clear, closed everything and rebooted.
Ran hijackthis and you have new log below.
This has helped some in that it has speeded up my PC.
I am still getting the cpu spikes at 100% lasting about 4 seconds about a minute apart. When that happens it stops everything (freezes pc) until spike goes down.
I get disconnected from aol when visiting a site which requires the latest java to be loaded, I'm sure I have updated that but maybe something happened to it.
I also have some questions about the missing folders I mentioned is last post but will wait for your reply on this before asking. Thanks again for your help.

Now that you have Spybot, Start Spybot click mode make sure that advanced mode is checked. Click tools>system startup to the right is a double arrow bar click it to expand. Now clicking on the value you will get a description of command line. Remove the green check mark on the ones in the database status that are not "Typically not required" Should you decide that you need or want them just place a checkmark back in the box. Any of unknown status can be unchecked one by one reboot, this completes the change. Doing this one by one when you notice that you have disabled the "badie" leave it unchecked. Hope this helps ;)
Followed your instructions but I'm having problems with this one, everytime I uncheck and reboot, the box is checked again.

KEY= HK_CU:Run
Value= ctfmon.exe
Command line= C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctfmon.exe

Current File Name= C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctfmon.exe
Data Base Status= Not Required - virus, spyware, malware or other resource hog
Value= ctfmon.exe
File Name= ctfmon32.exe
Description= CoolWebSearch parasite related - hijacking to Slawsearch.com
Source= Paul Collins Startup list.

I have unchecked everything, in Spybot> Advanced Mode>Tools>System startup, that is not either AOL, Norton, or Symantec related.
I still get the cpu use spikes to 100% lasting 4-5 seconds roughly about a minute apart. Still getting disconnected from AOL when I go to the mentioned site. Is that a java problem not related to this?
If I make folders to replace the two missing ones-
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\CONTENTS
and
C:\Temp\CONTENTS
Will they function properly? Is the file path still there? Or is it a done deal or can I repair this, and where is that stuff going now? Can it be fixed with Scan Disc?

Once again, thank you very much for your time.

Download then unzip and run CWShredder to clean up clicking "FIX" to have it remove all it finds.

CWShredder available from these places :-

http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads.php
http://www.aluriasoftware.com/tools/cwshredder.zip
Or this as a full download without any unzipping required
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/CWShredder.exe

We have found that some of the CWS infections can be removed better from safe mode, rather than normal mode.
To get to safe mode use the F8 key while booting the machine. Detailed instructions from here :-
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…001052409420406

There is a chance that you will find nothing.

Process File: ctfmon or ctfmon.exe
Process Name: Alternative User Input Services
Description: A service that handles the Alternative User Input Text Processor (TIP) and the Microsoft Office Language Bar. It provides text input support for speech recognition, handwriting recognition, keyboard, translation, and other alternative user input technologies.
Company: Microsoft Corp.
System Process: Yes
Security Risk ( Virus/Trojan/Worm/Adware/Spyware ): No
Common Errors: N/A
Followed your instructions.
Downloaded CWShredder. Opened it and clicked check for updates, this is what I got;
You have a variant of the CoolWebSearch trojan (cws.Smartsearch.2) that has attempted to close CWShredder. To counter this,CWShredder is now starting with a random string of text in the title bar. CWShredder is still functioning fine, it has not been corrupted.

CWShredder will not update. I tried half a dozon times says; The server might not be available try again later.
Started up in safe mode and ran CWShredder anyway, it did not find anything.
What's next?

Downloaded and ran SmartKiller. SmartKiller message= CoolWWWSearch.SmartKiller (v1/v2) has not been found on your system. Deleted CWShredder then re-downloaded. Turned off firewall and intrusion dection then checked for updates. CWShredder says I have the latest version. Enabled firewall and intrusion dection. Booted in safe mode and ran CWShredder. CWShredder finds nothing. PC is running fast this morning and I do not see the 100% cpu spikes and the freezing. Everything in Spybot>advanced>tools>system startup is still unchecked except for what automatically re-checks it self. System appears clean, and is running well. :=) Any advice to questions in previous post? Specific site I'm having trouble with is site for n-scale model trains. www.nscale.org Thanks again little eagle.

This is nothing to worry about.

Please read through the ideas and free software listed below that will help to keep your computer clean. Some of these you may have.

Do not let any site install anything if you do not know what it is.

Install a firewall.ZoneAlarm*free

Ensure that an Antivirus is updated weekly and running. AVG antivirus from Grisoft is a very good FREE antivirus program.

Make sure you have the latest critical updates from windows update.

SpywareBlaster will prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.

IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 known 'bad' sites into your IE restricted zone so that they cannot install malware on your PC.

Google toolbar has a very good built in popup blocker with a nice search bar. To provide privacy, select disable advanced features when installing.

Check your system for latest virus definitions with an online virus scan here or here

Check your system for latest trojan definitions with an Online trojan scan

And also see this link for additional security information.
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Please consider using Firefox
http://texturizer.net/firefox/index.html

C:\WINDOWS\Temp
C:\Temp

Are you saying that they do not show up or that nothing is in there.
C:\WINDOWS\Temp has 48 seperate folders and 48 seperate files, not in folders, in it's contents. C:\Temp does not exist. There is no folder with that name. What I do have is a folder C:\WUTemp which has no contents. If these two folders are one and the same, please excuse my ignorance. What could be causing my AOL to disconnect when visiting that site? Thanks again for all your help. nscalenut
