Hello, My apologies for the incomplete log, I thought I had pasted all of it. I can't seem to get past the last object listed on the post I sent you, eventhough I just checked the log and there are many other entries. May I send you the log via email? In the meantime, I will scan with spybot, reboot and then download and run the latest version of Ad-aware. Thank you. Alyluna
I have checked over the last HJT log that I originally made the recommendations on and have decided we are better to wait until this scan is done and forget the rest of the old scan. If we need it then I'll ask you for it later. The one thing we need to do is try to avoid what happened last time with the large removal of nasty entries.
Hello again,

As you requested, I downloaded the new version of Ad-aware and had it perform a scan. It found 245 objects which I had quarantined and deleted. I have not reboot my computer since the scan. Incidently, as I was performing the Ad-aware scan, my Norton Anti-virus program opened and showed that it had detected TrojanKillAV in some files, but was unable to remove the infected files, so I selected quarantine for these infected files.

After the Ad-aware scan, I scanned the system with HijackThis and produced the following log.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks!

Alyluna

Ok I've got some other instructions for you. I note that you have disabled something in your startup which hides it from the spyware removers if it is spyware.

Step#1

There is a new version of HijackThis available which shows more. Please delete the HJT version that you have, then download and install the new version of HJT HijackThis 1.98.2 into it's own folder.

Step #2

This infection may be the one that continues to reinstall itself through a hidden dll which we have to find and remove.

1. Please download DllCompare
( The Screenshot will show you how the program will look when it starts.)

2. Start the Program with its default settings and put a check mark in the include subdirectories. Click the Run Locate.com and wait until the scan says complete.

3. Click the Compare button to start the next process.

4. Files in the upper portion have been verified to "exist", Files in the bottom section were not able to be accessed. Very few files should be listed in the bottom section when the Compare scan is complete.

5. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower section to select them. Right-click on the file and use the Option Rescan screenshot.

6. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then it will be removed from the list (to reduce the number of identified files) screenshot

7. Click the Make a Log of what was found button, and post the log here in this thread using Add Reply to receive further instructions.

Step#3

Scan again with the new version of HijackThis and POST a new log file here in this thread with the log file from DllCompare

The following needs to be done before you are completely clean but because it involves a reboot I will not ask you to do it until we think it is safe for you to reboot.

Please go to Start>Settings>Run and type msconfig. When the System Configuration Utility opens use the general page and put a check mark in normal startup.
OK, here is the DLCompare log file. There were no files listed on the bottom portion section of the scan application.

* DLLCompare Log version(1.0.0.125)
Files Found that Windows does not See or cannot Access
*Not everything listed here means you are infected!

Here's the log produced when I scanned with the new version of HijackThis.

I await further instructions. Thanks.

hi Alyluna there isn't much that can be done until you have restarted the computer. How is everything working now? Tell me about what it is doing and/or what errors you are receiving.

Please go to Start> Settings>Control Panel > Add Remove Programs and uninstall anything that says LimeShop, or Limewire or anything like that.

Now backup the log files you need to a CD if you can (you floppy isn't working you said) so that you can send me the log files from Ad-Aware if your computer hangs again when we attempt to reboot it.

I am going to ask you to attempt to Restart your computer now, as we are at the point where we can not do anything without you restarting.

After successfully rebooting, do the following:

Please go to Start>Settings>Run and type msconfig. When the System Configuration Utility opens use the general page and put a check mark in normal startup.

REBOOT again

Scan again with HJT and post a new log file. Things look pretty good at the moment but we'll have to see what appears once you are starting in normal mode.

Good Luck!
Success! I rebooted (all the while holding my breath) and the computer did not stall! I did as you suggested, started up in normal and the computer is really sloooow.

Below is the new HijackThis log.

Waiting for the next step.

Thanks for all of your help!

Wow we finally seem to be in the home stretch! Bet you are glad! One question is www.astound.net your ISP?

Step#1

It appears you have both Norton AntiVirus and McAfee running on your computer, this will cause conflicts and slow your computer markedly. Please choose the one that you can update with new definitions every few days and uninstall the other one.

Step#2

Please Go To Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs and uninstall
1)Delphin Promulgate Project PCSVC media viewer which is adware
2)Download Program Accelerator (or similar) as it is not recommended
3)Keen Value eUniverse programs which are adware and not recommended for security reasons
4)second thought - trojan
5)CLOCKS~1 is adware

Step#3

First I have noticed that HijackThis is in a temporary folder and it needs to be in a permanent folder to make sure the backups are useable.

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click in the window and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and Paste HijackThis.exe into the new folder

Step#4

I would like you to go to C:\WINDOWS\TASKS\AVMFC.EXE and check the properties of AVFMC.exe and post them back here. I can find no information about this file so it may be bad.

Step#5

Next you have a peper trojan infection which is very stubborn and wasn't visible earlier:

1. Please Download PeperFix.exe,

2. Start the tool and click Find and Fix.

3. Reboot to finish removing what it found.

4. Run the tool a second time (with an active internet connection).

5. Reboot to finish removing the entries.

Step#6

3. Close ALL windows except HijackThis. Double Click on 'HijackThis.exe' to start a new scan.

4. Put a check mark beside each of the following entries in Hijack This, then 'fix checked': (some may be gone from uninstalling the program)

8. REBOOT into normal mode

Step#7

1)A cleanup that will help is to go to Start>Programs>Acccessories>System Tools> Disk Cleanup and put a check mark beside all the entries in the disk cleanup window that ask you what you want to clean. Clean all hard drives and all files. This will get rid of any malware that is hiding in the temporary folders.

2)Make sure that all are gone, by checking the folders that the Temporary Internet Files and Temp files are stored in. To do so use Control Panel > Internet Options(or right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Properties). Click Delete Files on the General Tab - place a check in the Delete all offline content box, then 'Clear History' and then press OK

3)Empty your Recycle Bin

4)Double Check the following folders to make sure they are empty:
C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\your account\Temporary Internet Files
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp\ folder

Step#8

1) SCAN again with HijackThis

2) POST a new log file here in this thread using Add Reply to see what is left to clean.
Wow, I have a major task ahead of me! Guess, what I'll be doing this weekend? I'll follow your instructions and will post again soon. Thanks so much. Alyluna
Hello! I hope your weekend has been a relaxed one.

OK, I've completed the tasks that you requested. Below is a summary of some of the steps you asked me to take.

Step #4 Properties for AVFMC.exe: File Description - AVFMC, size 706KB, Created 8/26/2004, Archive ( I have no idea what this is, but when I boot my computer if I hit CTRL, ALT, Delete this application is running)

Step #5 Download PeperFix.exe: I downloaded and ran but no peper files were detected.

Step #6 Ran HijackThis and checked off the entries that mentioned. Rebooted in Safe Mode and attempted to find/delete some of the folders/files you indicated, however, I was unable to locate all (if you need to know which ones I didn't find, let me know and I will post) Rebooted in Normal Mode and my computer stalled, it took a very, very long time to get back to the desk top.

Step#8 Ran HijackThis again, but I did not check off or ask it to fix anything. Below is the log.

Look forward to hearing from you again.

Alyluna
Sorry it's taken so long but again my email didn't notify me and I got busy and didn't check to see if you had posted. I am sorry to hear that things don't seem to be working again.

The following has appeared in your more recent log files, did you install it?
C:\PROGRAM FILES\ACD SYSTEMS\DEVDETECT\DEVDETECT.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Camera Detector] C:\PROGRA~1\ACDSYS~1\DEVDET~1\DEVDET~1.EXE -autorun
Please do not install anything other than the tools I tell you to as they will just have to be replaced once your computer is clean

Step#1

You still have the Peper infection that is so stubborn. Here is another tool which hopefully will find and delete it this time:

1. Please Download PeperFix.exe,

2. Start the tool and click Find and Fix.

3. Reboot to finish removing what it found.

4. Run the tool a second time (again with an active internet connection).

5. Reboot to finish removing the entries.

Step#2
I believe that this is the file that is causing the problem, however we must determine it is not a necessary windows file.
C:\WINDOWS\TASKS\AVMFC.EXE

Please go to Start > Find and search by date created for 8/26/2004 and see what files come up under that date. See if it correlates with your Antivirus program at all or what other programs come up with the same date and time . You may be able to identify AVMFC.exe doing this. Please post what you find here.
please note I transposed the letters before and you may have searched for the wrong file name

Step#3

It appears that there is a file causing the infection to reinstall every time you restart the computer. You mentioned using your disk to reinstall Windows, there is more to that than just using the disk to remove these infections. It is cleanable, even though it is taking a long time to do it. Even though it doesn't seem like it we are on the home stretch…

1. Download: "StartDreck", from here:
StartDreck

2. Unzip to its own folder and start the program,

3. Press 'Config'

4. Press 'Unmark All'

5. Check the following boxes only:
Registry -> Run Keys
System/drivers> Running processes

6. Press 'Ok'

7. Press 'Save' and select the location to save the log file
(default is the same folder as the application)

8. Post the log here.

9. Scan again with HJT

10. POST the log file here with the log from start dreck.

If the information about that file is what I think we only have a few more steps. I need the HJT log file as I think new file names are being created with each reboot of your system. Please do not restart your computer until you hear from me later today so we can get the current file name to delete

Good Luck!
Hello! No need to apologize for not responding sooner. I know you have a life and I certainly appreciate your taking time to help me with this. I beleive we're making progress!

The file ACD Sytems\DEVDETECT\DEVDETECT I beleive is associated with my son't digital camera program. It was installed, I think when we bought the camera, several months ago. I will confirm that with him and will let you know if it's not.

As you suggested, I ran PeperFix and again it indicated that no peper files had been detected.

I search for AVMFC.exe file by date created and that was the only file that was found, however, when I opened the folder in which it's located, I found some other files that, I think, are associated with my Anti Virus - Norton program. These first four files that I've listed below had small red X on the corners. The files are named as follows:

Norton AntiVirus - Scan my computer.job
Tune-up Application Start.job
Symantec NetDetect.job
PCHealth Scheduler for Data Collection.job
cfmva.tmp
I have a screen shot of that folder if you'd like to see what I mean.

I didn't see your your last comment on not rebooting and I'm afraid I rebooted because the computer stalled. I rebooted before running HijackThis and StartDreck, though.

Here are the logs that were produced.

Thanks again for all of your help.

OK here goes, it is late here so this will be a one shot deal for tonight and we will continue tomorrow if that is ok with you.

The StartDreck scan indicated that there is no hidden file. Since both it and DllCompare indicate no hidden file I guess there isn't one. What that means is that one of the files you have on your system in the HJT log is changing names each time the computer is rebooted. To remove it will mean that you have to post a log and then wait for me to respond with the name of the file to delete before you reboot. At this point I am going to have you run HJT and remove what I know is malware and we'll see what turns up afterwards. If your son has the software for his camera so that it can be reinstalled once the computer is clean then I would like you to delete the software in case this is part of the infection I will include instructions to remove it, if he does not have the software, then please do NOT remove it The thing I find very odd about this software is if it is legitimate why is it appearing and disappearing from the log file. Believe it or not there is very little left in the log file!

Step#1

1. Scan again with HijackThis (ALL WINDOWS CLOSED EXCEPT HJT)

2. Put a check mark beside each of the following entries in the HJT window

O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {60112085-E1CE-4e0e-823A-EBB1AD98804C} - C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\RBASOD.DAT

O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {8109AF33-6949-4833-8881-43DCC232B7B2} - C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\CFMVA.DAT

* I suggest you remove all of the following as they will reinstall the next time you visit the website if they are legit*

3. Click 'fix checked'

4. REBOOT to finish removing the entries into SAFE MODE by tapping F8 repeatedly while booting up

5. DELETE the following files:

In the Task Schedule Folder delete all entries: (you can set them up again)

cfmva.tmp<– note that this is the same name as the DAT file in the O2's in the HJT log that is definitely a bad file

Norton AntiVirus - Scan my computer.job
Tune-up Application Start.job
Symantec NetDetect.job
PCHealth Scheduler for Data Collection.job

* The following two files I would like you to search for without an extension e,g:

RBASOD and CFMVA and do not worry about capitals or small letters all files with these two names are bad!* any file with the identical name but not necessarily the same extension, all should be deleted

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\RBASOD.DAT
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\CFMVA.DAT

6. REBOOT into normal mode

Step#2

Now I have noticed that your computer is still loading with some of the startup files not loading. It is important to have all startup entries loading as the malware can hide in there and you would still be infected even though the log file looks clean

1. Please go to Start > Run and type in the box msconfig.

2. When the System Configuration Utility opens please go to the Startup tab and make sure there is a check mark beside each entry.

3. Then on the general tab please select Normal Startup

4. REBOOT to finish the changes

5. please SCAN again with HJT

6. POST a new log file here in this thread using 'Add Reply' to see what is left to clean

Good Luck!
Hello again,

OK, I've followed all of the instructions in your last post and all seemed successful, except for the instructions below:

Your Instructions:
* The following two files I would like you to search for without an extension e,g:

RBASOD and CFMVA and do not worry about capitals or small letters all files with these two names are bad!* any file with the identical name but not necessarily the same extension, all should be deleted

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\RBASOD.DAT
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\CFMVA.DAT

I searched for the above w/out the extensions and then with the . DAT extension, but the files were not found.

I've rebooted and am now running all start up programs. Looking forward to hearing from you again. Thanks!
