I'm a bit unsure of myself, but I've downloaded and run HiJackThis and have copied the log below. I couldn't find Ver 1.98 so this log came from 1.97. Can you use this info, or can you direct me to a site where I can download a later version. I tried to update from the Spywareinfo.com site, but it didn't respond. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi and welcome to the forum. :D

Step # 1

Please download and run CWShredder. Make sure that all browser windows are closed with the exception of Cwshredder and choose FIX.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html

REBOOT

Step #2

Please download and run Spybot Search & Destroy & Adaware, both can be found in my signature below. Then follow the instructions in the links below to run.

Spybot Tutorial

AdAware Tutorial

REBOOT

Step # 3

Please do an online scan, 2 would be better,

Micro World http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/free_utilities.asp

Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Reboot and post a new HiJackThis log. You need to update you Hijakcthis as there is a new version which you can download HERE
Hi Siggyx,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, but my request for e-mail notification of your reply didn't work and I just discovered your message this morning. In any case, I've loaded and run all the programs you suggested, and I've attached the latest scan log from Version 1.98 of HiJackThis. One item to note: when I ran "eScan" from MicroWorld, it noted a virus in my previous "hijackthis.log" and labeled it as "Exploit.HTML.Mht" and renamed the file (to what, I don't know). Hope this is of no consequence.

Thanks for working on this with me, and I'll check back for your reply a bit sooner next time.

Heere's the log:

These are optional fixes as they are resource hogs at boot time. They will not be deleted only removed from start up.

Reboot and post a new log. How is it running after the reboot?
Thanks, siggyx . . . you did a great job, and I seem to be free of CWS demons and the dreaded "about:blank" home page on Internet Explorer. I've immunized my system and will update it regularly. Hopefully, that will be the end of those hijacking SOBs! I'll enthusiastically recommend this Forum to another pal who has been hijacked, too.

As you asked, I've attached the latest HiJackThis scan log, and my system is running fine as far as I can tell.

Thanks again!

Looks good :D  Any Issues?

Ok you ready for the fireside chat? :weee:

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. In my signature below is also a tutorial on how to harden IE, a good read and very helpful to stop these things in the future. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on.

Safe Surfing. :D
Hi (again) siggyx,

I was hoping we had done what we needed to to give "about:blank" the deep six, and for the balance of the day yesterday, everything was back to normal. But this morning, when I opened IE, there was "about:blank" showing up as my home page.

I tried to recall anything I had done since yesterday, and the only things I can recall are (1) visiting the Schwab Web site, (2) visiting the Yahoo Finance Web site, and (3) reloading a hot key (Ctrl-V) that I had disabled so I could copy the scan logs into these messages. None of those activities has caused a problem before, so was it possible there was still some tidbit of CWS code left on my computer when we finished yesterday?

Well, since I knew you'd ask, I've attached the latest scan log from HiJackThis and have included today's date in its title so I don't get confused about which log is which . . . hope that's OK. Please let me know what you think is happening here.

Thanks,

Hijacked

Well you have picked up one of the nastiest coolwebsearch hijacks out there :rant2: . I will flag this to an expert as very special processes are required for this. Hang in there and please do not attempt to delete anything with hijackthis.
Hi siggyx, Haven't heard from anyone yet . . . can you give me an estimate of when the expert you mentioned can help me with this nasty CWS infection? Thanks. Hijacked
Hi guys

Click here to download FindnFix.exe (2K/XP only!) by freeatlast. Double-click on the FINDnFIX.exe and it will install a folder called FINDnFIX on your system. Go to that folder and double-click on !LOG!.bat. The program takes a few minutes to collect the necessary information. When done post the contents of Log.txt in this thread.
Hi Daemon, Thanks for jumping in on this one. I've attached the FindnFix log as you requested. Also, I have 22 objects still in quarantine from when I ran Ad-aware as siggyx had requested . . . do I need to delete them? If they are quarantined, they can't harm you - nothing to worry about.

Disable your antivirus for this next part. Open FINDnFIX again. In the keys1 folder, double click on FIX.bat. You will get an alert of about 15 seconds before reboot - allow it to reboot. On restart, open Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\System32 folder, find the COMBN.DLL file (it should be visible now). Highlight the file and using top menu, click Edit>Move to folder…

Select C:\Findnfix\junkxxx as destination. Move the file.

Open the FINDnFIX folder again and double-click on RESTORE.bat. When it is finished, in FINDnFIX folder, there will be a file called Log2.txt - post it's contents in your next reply.
Daemon, Here's Log2.txt from FindnFix after running Fix.bat and Restore.bat . . . is this the end of "about:blank" or do we have more surgery to perform?
