I keep having problems downloading or should i say running hijackthis. i downloaded it i'd say 6 or 7 times from the site thus far. everytime i try to open it i get an error it says that MSVBVM60.DLL is missing. can someone PLEASE help me with this? I asked for help in the problems forums and no reply in the couple hours it was posted. i'm positive i still have things i need off this computer it's runs slow for me and it shouldn't. the computer i had previously was a 300 mhz processor this is a 730mhz processor and it's running slower than the other one did. i have addaware and i have to scan the computer every 5 minutes or less just to remove anywhere from 4 to 7 things each time i scan. and i'm sure there's more on this computer because removing what addaware finds isn't helping. and i've run a virus scan and there are no virus's on here. so please i would greatly appreciate some help on this matter. thanks Mell
ok it worked, now i have to figure out how to do this correctly and if anything needs fixed/removed, i'm probably going to need help with that too. i ran addaware right after you posted, then i encounters some IE errors and some kind of Ddhelp thing which i keep getting continously. i ran updates for windows about a week and a half ago. didn't seem to improve anything i still get the same errors everytime and i keep getting the same spyware on the computer. so how do i do the hijackthis and save it to post what i'm supposed to? sorry i'm new to all this my ex told me to come here so please bare with me. :)
Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.com!

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Download HijackThis into this folder.

If required a tutorial is here = Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

Run it from that folder.

Click "Scan".

DO NOT "FIX" ANYTHING WITH IT YET!!!
FIXING THE WRONG THING COULD RENDER YOUR SYSTEM INOPERABLE!!!

Click "Save log".

After you click "Save Log", the contents of the log file should open up in a Notepad window. Right-click with the mouse in the Notepad window, then choose "Select All". Right-click again and choose "Copy".

Come back here, "Reply" to this thread. Right-click in the "reply window" and choose "paste". The contents of your log file will then be transferred here. :)

ok i did a scan and i hope i did this correctly. ALSO my computer is performance is only at 54% right now which is odd. it shouldn't be THAT low. so if anything is in the list that could cause this problem and can fix that problem as well please let me know. thanks for helping me your a life saver!
ps. i'm this list i have no idea what it means lol so i'm sorry if i don't understand what all this stuff is.

Please download and run Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are the standard programs for finding and cleaning malware off your system. Here are links to both programs, and instructions for their use.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de (This is the NEW Version 1.3)
Get AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

Download and install these programs in their own PERMANENT folders if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED.

To run Spybot S&D:

After installing first press "Online", click on "Search for Updates", then select all updates. Beside the download button is a little down-pointed arrow, which gives you a choice of several download sites; select one of the servers listed (the Australian server usually works well). Now, press "Download Updates." If that site doesn't work or you get an error message, try a different server.

When the updates are finished, close your browser and ALL WINDOWS EXCEPT THE ONE SPYBOT IS RUNNING IN, then press 'Check for Problems'; THE SCAN WILL TAKE SEVERAL MINUTES. Have SpyBot remove all it finds THAT ARE MARKED IN RED. When it's finished, REBOOT your system.

Get AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

Then, Run ADAWARE:

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate" button at the lower right of the panel. The current ref file should read at least 01R312 20.07.2004 or a higher number/later date. Updates for this program come out frequently to keep up with new malware. THIS IS CRITICAL; updating is as important as installing these programs.

Then ……..
Make sure the following settings are made and on ——-"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

then……
click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options ON: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

then………
go to settings(the gear icon on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and click "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ………..then…….."Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then…… click "proceed" to save your settings.
To scan, click NEXT. This scan will also take several minutes.

When the scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press "next" and then say YES to the prompt, "do you want to remove all these entries?" Reboot again.

Run Hijack This! again, make a new log file, and post it in this thread again, and we'll see what's left over that needs fixing. :)
ok i finally got done with all that you listed. do you have any idea what "180 search assistant" is? i keep getting some pop up whenever i log on about that. i never say to download it and i never click any options i just close it. but it keeps poping up all the time. i downloaded the newest version of addaware and deleted my old version. there is something spybot keeps detecting, and it's clicked and i click to remove it but every time i do one more scan it detects the same thing over and over. it says it's been fixed but it's still finding it???

i did the hjt scan as well this is what i have now.

Good job!!!

The programs got rid of a fair chunk of the malware.

Next, you need to print this or copy the text into a Notepad or Word document because before "fixing" these thing you MUST close all other windows and programs BEFORE running Hijack This!.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!

Put a "check" in the box to the left of each of the following lines, then click "Fix checked":

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\CV.EXE

Pass the cursor over it and post back what shows up in the text box that appears when you pass the cursor over it.

It will have info like who wrote the file, the date and time the file was created, and things like that.

I think it's a "bad" file, but I need to be sure. :)
ok i cut and pasted it into notepad. i thought i had word but appearantly i haven't reinstalled it yet on this computer. oops. i haven't done the list yet because i just now got online to get the message. HOWEVER, when my ex told me about HJT, he told me to do control alt delete to see what was running. to see what came up in the list. and he told me that webrebates needs to be removed. which i thought so too because it just mysteryously appeared on my computer and didn't sound like something that was supposed to be there either. i had origonally gone into control panel add/remove programs and removed webrebates from that list. however, it's still there, i tried to delete it out of program files last night but it will not let me delete it. not only that, but when i put in in recyle bin, although it was there, it created another folder with the same folders within in the program files. i opened it, figured i'll delete the folders in there one by one. then something weird happened, there were 3 folders inside the webrebate folder, i deleted the first one, then i went to delete the 2nd one and not only did it not let me delete the 2nd one, but the one i had just deleted was there again out of the blue it just reappeared!and the webrebated folder i tried to delte first is STILL in recycle bin. so now it's in two places that i know of and i can't get it off my computer. i'm going to try to do what you said, and cross my fingers i don't forget something or do something wrong lol. i'll follow what you said step by step though. if i have any probelms trying to do it, i'll come back and let you know. right now it is 11:20am i have to leave a few mintues before 1pm to go to work so if i can't get it done before i have to leave i'll check back after work. thank you sooooooo much for helping me. i almost gave birth to a cow when i saw all that the new addaware and the spybot found and got rid of!! thanks again! Mell
ok i did what you said, alot of what you listed, didn't come up in HTJ, the stuff you said to click? maybe possibly it was removed with addaware or spybot or something else i'm not sure but some of those weren't in the list so i just clicked the ones i could find. the realsurf is a site i put on my start up page for the browser it's a site with surf reports and pics of surfing etc. lots of beautiful pics of beaches there.
anyway….i finally was able to delete the webrebates folder and it was the only one from the list i could find. i searched for the other files but it said there were none. and i even clicked the show all files.

here's the new HJT log….

crap! i forgot the cv thing. sigh….i'll be back after i see what that is…sorry about that i knew it felt like i was forgetting something.
ok i was just looking through the new report, umm….i noticed, all the things i clicked and then clicked fixed are there??? and the files i was supposed to look for and delete i safe mode i couldn't find when i was in safemode but it was also files that HJT fixed but they're still there?? why aren't they removed like it said it did? and if they weren't removed, why couldn't i find them to manually delete them in safe mode??
ok i went and looked at that cV.exe….not sure what it is but this is what it said when i put the curser to view discription. cV.exe application modified:3/31/04 9:23pm size:229kb also there was a cV.dll right next to the cV.exe. i have to leave soon, when i get back, should i follow the steps you said to again and see if that stuff still comes up again? thank you for helping me i greatly appreciate it :) mell
Your're doing a great job!!!

The list is getting shorter.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!

Fix these with Hijack This!:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00000010-6F7D-442C-93E3-4A4827C2E4C8} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Cv.exe] C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\CV.EXE

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [stcinstaller] c:\installer\id53.exe

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete (if you can):

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\CV.EXE <— file

c:\installer\id53.exe <— file

Boot in normal mode. Run Hijack This! again and post a new log file.

Don't worry about not finding the files. Sometimes it seems those malware files come and go almost as if by "magic". :)
One thing you should do just before you post your next log file is to try some free online virus scanner/removal tools.

I don't see any virii, trojans, or worms, in the log file, but these scans will find and fix items that Hijack This! might not detect.

I'd rather be "safe" than "sorry".

Please try these online virus removal tools:

Trend-Micro:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Panda:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

Etrust:
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

Let them remove any infections found. Reboot inbetween each scan.
:weee:
you've got very good instinct as to bad files. that cV.exe was a trogan called STILEN.A there were 4 other trogens the files were windows/temp/alchem.cab…windows/temp/polmx.cab*….windows/temp/wupdt.exe…..so if you ever look at anying HJT log and see those let them know they're trogans and they must be deleted. the cV.exe file can't be deleted with the antivirus, you have to go in safe mode and delete it that way.

i did another HJT log and found 2 that i think you'll say to delete it's the ones that say no name no file in before and after them. look alot like the ones you mentioned before. but here's the new log.
