No worries, always best to check if unsure

One of the checks that the repair tool can do is for malware, that is why I emphasize to follow all steps other than checking for malware as that is out of my remit.

Hello Phill,

Thank you very much for your quick reply. I got right to it. Everything is disabled in msconfig per the instructions. One problem I am running into in the Task Scheduler is that there is one task which I am not able to disable - even after rebooting. I am attaching a screen shot. Am I good to proceed by running All In One repair?

Hello millermaster,

Apologies for the delay, I suspect that we are in different timezones me being in the UK.

If not done already, run the Windows AIO repair tool please, any problems, uninstall all traces of Seatools and try again if you will.

Hello Phill,

Please do not apologize. You are helping me for free in your spare time. I absolutely apreceate anything and everything you do to help me! Yes, we are in different time zones. I am 6 hours behind the UK which places me in the midwest in the US.

I had unistalled Seatools before. I would not know how to uninstall any traces of it. I had Seagate Dashboard installed to create my back up. I uninstalled this for now. The result is no different though. I am not able to disable that task in Task Scheduler.

Last night I looked thru some of my photos using Windows Live Photo Gallery when the screen turned blue with some text which I couldn't read all because the text started outside of what the screen. When the PC rebooted a windows came up which read:

Problem signature:

…

I went ahead with the optional Pre-Scan (Step 2) in Windows all in one repair. This found  problems. I am going to attach the log at the end. Unfortunately it snowed here in real life. I will have to clear my driveway and head to work. I *may* not be able to reply or do anything else till Wednesday afternoon your time.

Any improvement with the original issue since you ran the AIO repair tool.

We could do with looking to see what caused the BSOD, please see below;

1. Copy any dmp files from C:\Windows\Minidump onto the desktop.
2. Select all of them, right-click on one, and click on Send To> New Compressed (zipped) Folder.
3. Upload the zip folder using the Attach button, bottom left of the dialogue input box

Hello Phill,

I completed running AIO repair tool. Afterwards it took a bit of time for the PC to react to anything but eventually I was able to start and re-enable everything in MSconfig and Task Scheduler. Security essentials is up and running, too. The PC seems to be super fast again and I have not seen that window pop up again or had any other issues - but I had no time yet to run much on it.

You had asked for an expanded screen shot of DiskManager after running AOR. I am attaching that screen shot.

I also am including the ziped file of the three dmp files which I found on C:\Windows\Minidump. I wasn't able to create a zip file in that folder and received an error message "File not found. No read permission". So, I copied the contents to the desktop and ziped it there without a problem.

Thank you very much for looking into this for me,

millermaster

Hello millermaster,

How are things with the computer atm.

HDD looks ok

Two of the three dmps are a week old so of very little use but fwiw they were both caused by an out of date or corrupt Windows driver, the issue may have been resolved either by a previous Windows update or by you running the AIO repair tool, the latest dmp was caused by an ati video driver, we need to see how the computer is behaving now before suggesting anything further regarding the ati driver.

Phill,

I am back to a full work schedule and probably won't have time to spend much time on the PC till Friday next week but I told my wife to go ahead and use it again. Last night I noticed the CCC window showing again after about half a minute or so it shows up for about a full second.

Thank you,

Millermaster

Phill,

It's been a week now that we used our PC again. There have been no further crashes. The only issue is still the Catalyst Control Center window which pops up:

Catalyst Control Center: Host Application has stopped working

Windows is checking for a solution to the problem…

This is more an annoyance than a "real" problem while entering information in another window.

Hello Millermaster,

You gain no benefit of even having the CCC software on your computer so I suggest that you completely remove it, uninstall steps here

If you had a modern gaming type computer with one of the latest add on AMD video cards there would be some benefit to having it but not with your older integrated video chip, one of the things that the CCC does is look for driver updates for newer AMD devices whereas any drivers for your IGPU are obtained through Windows updates.

Um, so I actually did not have the CCC software by AMD but by ATI instead but I followed the instructions in a likewise manner since the only difference was the word ATI vs. AMD. The AMD logo actually showed up on the ATI Catalyst Install Manager screen. "Perfect" or so I thought. I got to point 4 and in the ATI screen, too, did I find the very same menu. So, I followed the instructions to the dot: I clicked the radio button in front of "Express Uninstall All Software". I clicked on "next", confirmed "all versions" and clicked "ok" when Windows asked to make changes. Bad things started happening next. The list of items being removed in the background got long, the HDD started making smooth noises as it always does when programs are installed.
Nothing unusual untill the screen resolution went down to 800x600. I clicked the "cancel" button - but it was too late. So, yes, in reflecting what had happened with some laughter, the program did in deed remove anything ATI it could. So, I rebooted the PC and thanks to "System Restore" (which I never ever used before) found a point from right before the ATI express uninstall all debacle. Everything is back to normal now. Hmm, I guess I won't do that again.

In the past I had used Ccleaner to help with some issues. I believe if I go into Cleaner => Tools => Startup I can change "startCCC" to disabled. I believe this might help. What is your take on that?

Good call on your behalf using the restore point

CCC can be disabled using msconfig but if you are comfortable using CCleaner the outcome will be the same.

NB: AMD took over ATI Radeon some years back so are one and the same.now.

Phill,

I just was about to let you know that we are good to close this posting. I had a couple important windows security updates installed yesterday around 3PM. If I recall this correctly, the PC didn't reboot after it finished the 2nd install. I worked on my PC till shortly before midnight. Today when I turned the PC on in the morning the screen resolution was changed back to 800x600. I thought that something may have gone wrong during the 2nd security update, so I went back to that restore point but I am still looking at the 800x600 screen resolution. Unfortunately I do not remember what my PC was set to before but the available options appear to be distorted.

Now, I am not sure what exactly had happened. Is this perhaps part of the last restore I did after wiping out everything AMD/ATI or is it perhaps hardware failure? Or something completely different? If you don't mind helping me out again?

Thank you,

Millermaster.

Nothing to do with your restore point, it wouldn't have worked from the outset if there was a problem with the restore point that you used.

Did you check to see what was updated by Windows, one of the problems with being reliant on Windows for driver updates is that drivers quite often get updated for no reason and end up causing folk problems, it just so happens that updating graphics drivers that cause problems is one of the most common issues.

To check that it is not the display itself, do you have a notebook that you could hook up to your screen to see if you get a good display, this will rule out your display as being the cause.

See if you are able to install the MBs chipset drivers from here

Phill,

Thank you for your quick reply. I am not sure where to check what was updated by windows. I am not sure where I would look for this.

I hooked up the screen to a Linux notebook where it worked beautifully with a 1680x1050 resolution which is not an option.

When I went to Control Pannel => Hardware and Sound => Devices and Printers, there is an exclamation mark on a yellow triangle next to the PC (status: needs troubleshooting). I didn't try to do anything there but wanted to point this out.

As I was downloading the chipset drivers, of course, an update was uploaded by windows in the background requesting a reboot. So I went ahead and rebooted my PC.

In the downloaded zip file I ran setup.exe and went with the "express install all" option. When done I received an install package failure message which I saved to the desktop. I rebooted the PC, typing this up on my cellphone.

The result after this reboot was PHENOMENAL! The desktop resolution is back to normal. All icons are back to where they used to be.

Once again you saved my PC and its existence! I truly appreciate all you did. Thank you very much!
