as I was sent here by Juliet at safernetworking in the malware removal forum where she has been helping me with malware removal https://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?74241-clampi/page6 after I thought I was infected with clampi. I did have a moment that I was stopped by a supposed Microsoft employee saying I had been stopped to prevent network infection and until it was resolved Microsoft had me frozen. before I knew it he was remotely controlling my pc which I demanded he stop. he told me I had a "man in the browser" infection…clampi and I would have to have it removed and Microsoft would remove it for I think $250.00 payable then. after some choice words I had task manager say goodbye for me and then the quirks started with windows not wanting to start, I was having an odd start up prompt for a password and mine didn't work. at one point windows only two options given to me was reboot and windows would be gone of all software I had installed but I lose no files or windows do a complete reset and I lose it all. I chose the first and it did reboot as said but very very slowly and it took me a few attempts to restart before windows would open. now when it is asleep or off and comes on it takes as long as 5 minutes and may even have to reboot to pull it out of a startup lull where it just loads, loads loads. Juliet says you guys may can help in finding any damage done to my pc which is a gateway dx4860-ub32p with windows 10 home 64 bit. i'd also like to ask if you have an answer for the java runaround? I use to could open edge and select to open in ie and it was all fine. now it seems java won't work with IE either or the plugin won't…any help please? and thank you!

Hello rb56,

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here,  this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

Not seeing anything out of the ordinary in your Speccy report rb56.

Is BitDefender a free or paid for product.

Download Process Explorer which you can obtain from here

Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7 - right click and Run as Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK

Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header to arrange things by CPU usage, this will put the services with the highest CPU usage at the top of the log.

Wait a minimum of a minute then grab a screenshot and attach it to your next reply for us

To capture and post a screenshot;

Click on the ALT key + PRT SCR key..its on the top row..right hand side..now click on start…all programs…accessories…paint….left click in the white area …press CTRL + V…click on file…click on save…save it to your desktop…name it something related to the screen your capturing… BE SURE TO SAVE IT AS A .JPG …otherwise it may be to big to upload… Click on the More Reply Options tab then after typing in any response you have… click on Choose File…desktop…find the screenshot..select it and click on Attach This File…on the lower left…after it says upload successful…click on add reply like you normally would.

Screenshot instructions are provided to assist those that may read this topic but are not yet aware of the “how to”.

ok phill…I guess…hope…no news is still good news! of course in this world things can be so camouflaged that you think all is well then something has you and you never even saw it. as for bitdefender…I, uh…ahem…it's a paid subscription…after seeing it rated as best by pc magazine…hook line and sinker! I coulda shoulda done just as well with windefender I suppose as I've had as many attacks it seems with paid products as I have the free ones. ok, let me follow your directions and get back with that.

In Process Explorer, choose File->Show Details for all processes and see if you then get something similar to my screenshot, it is a System Idle Process reading that we are hoping for.

Regarding BitDefender, would you be ok with temporarily uninstalling it for testing purposes (you would need to make a note of your BD licence key first).

No worries

Still not getting the info required so will try something else; ( btw, the CPU usage looks to be ok in your screenshot above).

Couple of suggestions, the first one is to post an Autoruns log for us, see here

1: Extract the Autoruns Zip file contents to a folder.

2: Double-click the "Autoruns.exe".

3: Click on the "Hide Signed Microsoft and Windows Entries” option.

4: Go to File then to Export As or Save in some versions.

5: Save AutoRuns.txt file to known location like your Desktop > when you click on File > Save you will then get the option to Save as type, click the drop down tab, change it to Text and then click the Save button.

6: Attach to your next reply.

Tutorial here

2nd: Download and run TFC from here the computer should automatically re-boot on completion but if not do so manually.

Autoruns is also pretty good and nothing there that would slow down boot times.

Being honest I can only think that it is the quality of HDD that you are using, Western Digital green drives are fine for storage but are not ideal for booting from, lower power = slower drive.

For testing purposes only, uninstall Bitdefender and see how the computer behaves with Windows Defender as the AV protection (don't forget to write down your BD licence key first).

ok thanks…I uninstalled bitdefender at the first request and have gone without it since using WD. it has been doing ok I guess as far as I can see on my end with the exception of some hang ups which maybe 99% of us have. for an older pc it seems to run fine almost all of the time. I've had all kinds of AV software both free and bought from mcafee to Norton to avg to Kaspersky, spybot, bitdefender and windows…three of those I lost pc's while under subscriptions, I saw where PC mag claimed bitdefender best and after my last close call I thought i'd try. I have to say that after my subscription is up I may just stay with windows defender. so all looks good?
