Windows can't check for updates.

A friend asked me to look at her computer to see why Windows wasn't updating. I checked for malware and it appears to be clean.

I looked at the Windows Updates registry settings but discovered that the whole Windows Update folder (in red) was missing under HKLM\Software\Poicies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU so I ran a batch file to fix that.

I have also run Tweaking.com to fix Windows Updates and run FSS but nothing shows up so I'd be grateful if someone who knows what they're doing could try to fathom out where the problem lies as my expertise in Windows matters is VERY limited and don't want to make matters worse.

One thing I do know BTW, is that a friend of hers who "knows a lot about computers", (but no training), has fiddled about with it at some point so I don't know if he has done anything to contribute to the situation.

Thanks

Nina

Hi Ztruker

It's a 32-bit Toshiba Satellite Pro A300 running Vista

Model number: PSAGIE-006004EN

This is not the offending laptop so if I have to check more I#ll have to swith it back on.

Just ran Frst after trying updates via CP and this is the Event log and end section:

I'm afraid I won't be in for the next few hours so will look in when I return.

Thanks for looking at this for me.

Nina

Thanks Ztruker. I'll see if she has the disk and do that when I have time.

Thanks for looking. I'll keep you posted.

Nina

Do you have a Vista install DVD you can use to attempt repairs after you backup your data? If not, add a new post in this thread on the VistaX64 forums:

Vista ISO download

and ask Peter (Ex_Brit) to send you the link to the versions of Vista you need, 32 or 64. Include your E-mail address mucked up, like   abc at xyz DOT com  then edit your post and remove it as soon as you receive the link.

The ISO Peter provides has both SP1 and SP2 applied.

Pick up the Tutorial: How to Download a Vista ISO and Create an Installation DVD or USB here:

STEP THREE
To Create Vista Installation DVD or USB Flash Drive with ISO File

During the install, when asked for the key, don't enter it. You will then be given a menu where you can chose the version you want to install.

Activate once the install is completed.

Thanks for the very detailed instructions.

The strange thing is that to solve the problem I thought I'd upgrade to Windows 7 but she didn't know the product key. Used Magic Jelly Bean to find it and when I tried the upgrade MS said it was not the product key.

Then had a look at the obvious and found the product key on the underside of the laptop so tried again with that one but MS still said it was not the right key. This is definitely a genuine version of Windows Vista so I don't understand how the, (slightly worn-out), sticker on the underside of the laptop can be the wrong product key.

Will try Belarc and see if that finds one that matches and try the repair. :wall:

The key on the bottom of the laptop is the one to use for sure. If you get the ISO from EX_Brit as I described, make sure you DO NOT enter the key when asked. You will then be asked are you sure, would you like to neter the key now, you respond by checking NO.

The next window you see during install will be a list of  Vista version. Pick the one that matches what is currently installed, Basic, Business, Home Premium, Pro or Ultimate.

You activate once the install is complete.

Good grief, this Windows stuff is complicated.

I'll try tomorrow to do what you say and let you know what happens.

Thanks for the continued interest.

I updated my link above  to now take you directly to the Vista ISO download thread. Just add a new post in that forum asking Peter (Ex_Brit) to send you the link to the ISO you need, 32 or 64 bit.

Each ISO has all the Vista versions in it.

As I stated, during the install, when asked for the key, don't enter it. You will then be given a menu where you can chose the version you want to install.

Activate once the install is completed.
