I was stupid not to think of the situation with your Google account. Many apologies but I was late this morning and in a hurry, (that's my excuse).

Well done on sorting that out.

Let’s check your Internet settings, (you'll have to transfer this program to your problem computer as before).

Run MiniToolBox

Note: When using the "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option, Firefox should be closed.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Place a checkmark in the following checkboxes:

List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer errors
  • List Installed Programs

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Please also run FRST again and send the new log.

Thanks

Satchtag, MiniToolBox did not have "List last 10 event viewer log" to check, but I checked for everything else you listed.

We’ll have to run a different scan to check your Internet connection status.

First:

Multiple antiviruses

You have Norton Internet Security and Microsoft Security Essentials, (MSE) antivirus programs installed.

You can not run two real-time antiviruses at the same time. Although many have different methods of searching for and recognising threats, they will all be 'fighting' in memory to kick each other out, rendering them all ineffective.

As Norton is the complete package including a firewall, I would suggest you uninstall MSE.

1.    Click Start, Control Panel, Programs, and then Programs and Features.
2.    Click on Microsoft Security Essentials and then Uninstall.
Although Norton should have disabled Windows firewall, according to your log it is still enabled. Please check to make sure:

  • open Windows Firewall by clicking Start, Control Panel, and then click Windows Firewall
  • on the left, click Turn Windows Firewall on or off. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation
  • click Off (not recommended) , and then OK.

===================================================

Run Farbar Service Scanner

Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.

  • make sure ALL the options are checked
  • press "Scan".
  • it will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Thanks

Satchfan

Satchfan, I will be leaving for a  week long vacation 8-16 and may not have resources to work on corrections during that time. Please know that I am dedicated to following your help through. I will be checking over the next two days though very often for your instructions and will perform them as fast as I can before leaving on my vacation. When I return on 8-21, I will immediately check for your next direction. Thank you for all your time.

**** End of log ****

Thanks for letting me know about being away. I’ll keep this open until you let me know that you’re back but we’ll see how we get on for now.

Your main (immediate) problem here is resetting your wireless settings but I’m no expert in things Internet-related so may need a second opinion but we’ll see how things go.

Run Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

Open notepad (Start >All Programs > Accessories > Notepad). Please copy the entire contents of the code box below and paste it into Notepad.

  • save the files as fixlist.txt in the same folder as FRST – NOTE: It's important that both files, FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work
  • run FRST then click Fix just once and wait
  • it will create a log (Fixlog.txt); please post it to your reply.

If you still can’t connect to the Internet, try resetting the router to factory default and see if that makes a difference.

Hi. Internet is still not connecting on my problem computer, but when I checked the Wireless Properties in the Network and Sharing Center it shows that the computer has connection (green) to the "unidentified network", but then there is an X between that and Internet (globe picture). Everything else using wireless router in my home works and the problem computer does indicate it is successfully connected to wireless access.

I'm going to ask some of my colleagues who are knowledgeable in this area and get back to you as soon as I get some information. Hopefully, this will be resolved soon and we can continue to clean the machine.

If I don't get back before you leave for your holiday, have an enjoyable week and let me know when you have returned.

Hi Nala

I've heard from Farbar, (the compiler of FRST and a definite expert), and, having looked at your logs, he doesn't see the reason for the loss of connection. He did however suggest that you uninstall ALL your security programs, reboot and see if you can connect to the Internet.

If you don't have the time before you leave I'll wait to hear from you on your return.

Satchfan

All this help is much appreciated. Farbar is very kind to help.

I don't know what security programs I have that I would uninstall. I looked at Programs list, but all I recognize is NORTON which I didn't know I had because I don't pay for a service and it shows the original installation date to be  the year I purchased the computer in 2007. If I uninstall NORTON will I be able to reinstall it for no fee or would another security program better suit my needs

At one time I think I had WINDOWS DEFENDER, but I had already uninstalled it or it disappeared at some point.

I have the CCLEANER. I have used ADWARE in the past (not sure if that is the correct spelling). I really have no idea. I am not that computer literate.

I did just get a popup message about the inability of I think NORTON to scan emails because "network is not properly configured." First time I have seen that.

Is JAVA a security program? Many questions because I have no knowledge of these things.

I leave in a couple hours for my week long vacation. I will reconnect with you next Saturday when I return. Thank you for your well wishes.

Java is unimportant at this time, (it is not a security program). Uninstall Norton then reboot and let me know what happens.

Have a good week.

Hello. Enjoyed vacation. Returned yesterday. At work today. Should have borrowed computer to continue our efforts by this evening. Being cautious about modem reboots to see if that will remedy the internet connection issue. Not confident on how to do that since the cable company was kind enough to install my Cisco unit for me. Will try tonight. Thanks for checking on me.
Hello. I am back with borrowed computer. Uninstalled NORTON. Rebooted. Still no Internet Explorer connection. Tried to check my wireless connections and everything with router looks fine and ability to use this borrowed computer and other home devices indicate it is working, just not with my HP computer.
