possible virus associated w/ Chrome [Solved]

My new HP 15" laptop seems to be infected with a virus but only when I use Chrome. I get pop-ups that are impossible to delete forcing me to shut down Chrome, then the laptop. I see that others have had this problem.

A simple way to check your system: Start –> Computer (right click) –> Properties

Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.

Please make sure All Users is checked

Just keep the defaults as in the picture checkmarked

Press Scan button.

It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.

Please copy and paste log back here.

The first time the tool is run it generates another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe). Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

Good Morning,

Some entries to remove with FRST, but lets run these programs first as they will most likely remove most of them and more, then we can do a final cleanup with FRST

First do this as most of our tools and scanners run more efficiently right from the desktop in lieu of being buried in some folder , your running FRST64 here —> Running from C:\Users\[removed]\Downloads, so go into your downloads folder and look for FRST64, right click on it and select CUT, then come back to your desktop and right click on a blank space and select PASTE, with the programs I am going to have you run, download and run them from the desktop

-AdwCleaner-by Xplode

Click on this link to download : ADWCleaner

Click on ONE of the Two Blue Download Now buttons That have a blue arrow beside them and save it to your desktop.

Use my link only, do not do a search for AdwCleaner as there is a bogus copy going around by scammers

Do not click on any links in the top Advertisment.

Close all open programs and internet browsers.

Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.

Click on Scan.

After the scan is complete click on "Clean"

Confirm each time with Ok.

Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.

Please post the content of that logfile with your next reply.

You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

Under PUP and PUM make sure both are set to show Treat Detections as Malware

Make sure to select THREAT SCAN

Then click on Scan

When the scan is finished and the log pops up…select Copy to Clipboard

Great

What you have is not really a virus but what we consider a PUP ( Potentially Unwanted Programs ) They usually come bundled with other software that you downloaded. Its a shame but some vendors are adding this garbage to there downloads to increase revenue. Before you download and install that program you want, Google it and look at reviews and such and see if there is any problems related to it. During the install, you have to read read read what your installing and not just click on next during the installation, a good example of this is Java Update, if you don't look at what your doing and just click next it will install the ASK toolbar and search engine, its not malicious but its a very inferior search engine that you really don't want, during the installation there is an option to uncheck ASK, but a lot of people dont really read what there installing…….just saying

Running from C:\Users\[removed]\Downloads <—-This is where your running FRST from, most of our tools and scanner run more efficiently from the desktop in lieu of being buried in some folder, so go to your downloads folder and look for FRST64, right click on it and select CUT, then come back to your desktop and right click on a blank space and select PASTE

Then open up FRST64, make sure to put a check mark in Additions, then click Scan and post both new logs please

I'm aware the Ask feature on Java so I'm familiar with that issue. I think I probably overlooked that when I fired this unit up. You're right, this unit has a lot of bundled stuff, most of which I've avoided but obviusly not all………….oh well.

Good Morning

I am attaching a FIXLIST file, you need to save it to your desktop where you have FRST64 or the fix wont work, after you download it open up FRST64 and click on FIX (Not Scan) , it wont take long, it will reboot your system and you will find a FIXLOG on your desktop, post it please and let me know how your system is behaving now

the fixlist.txt should be in the same directoy/folder the tool is located

so I'm doing something wrong. I tried make the association you want but that failed. what am I doing wrong?

Why dont you delete FRST no matter where you have it so that you just have FRST64 on your desktop, make sure that you have FIXLIST.TXT on your desktop as well, drag FRST64 to an open area of your desktop, then drag FIXLIST right next to it, either above or below it but not on top of it and then try the fix again

I deleted the FRST and Fixlist files then dowloaded the Fixlist again. I followed your last instructions and got it to work. I had troouble restarting the laptop but finally got it started. I has to remove the battery since it kept restarting without success. So far I'm not very happy with Windows 8.1. I loved XP and have W 7 on my desktop.

Microsoft is bypassing Windows 9 as so many people complained about Windows 8, there going straight to Windows 10 and it will be available sometime this summer, dont quote me but it looks like windows 7 and 8 users may get a free upgrade to 10, the start menu will be back and it will look more like the windows operating system that we all like

Reboot a few times and tell me how your system is behaving now

Good morning. I've started the laptop several times with no incident so everything seems to be in oreder. Trying to type with W 8.1 is another issue! Another reason I don't like this OS.

Hi,

I have Windows 8.1 and so far I really like it, its more secure than previous operating systems and also I have never had a problem with my mouse, if your mouse is wireless you may want to change the batteries , if no joy there try getting a new mouse. Outside of your mouse I am happy all is ok

Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool again.

Click on the Uninstall button.

Click Yes when asked are you sure you want to uninstall.

Both AdwCleaner.exe, its folder and all logs will be removed.
