Window appeared saying "powershell has stopped working."  Since that time, numerous processes continue to run (95+) and CPU usage is maxed out.  I have googled this problem and everyone seems to identify the "dllhost.exe(*32)" processes as an issue.

Since I know nothing about computers I thought I could google a solution and do it myself.  I have since realized that will not work.  I previously ran a tweaking.com windows repair.  It did not seem to have either a positive or negative effect.

Below are the logs this website told me to include with my thread...

======================================================

Due to the nature of the infection present, I must issue the following warning. Please have a read and let me know what you think.

goGMWSt.gifBACKDOOR WARNING

------------------------------

One or more of the identified infections is known to use a backdoor, that allows attackers to remotely control your computer, download/execute files and steal critical system, financial and personal information.

If your computer was used for online banking, has credit card information or other sensitive data, using a non-infected computer/device you should immediately change all account information (including those used for banking, Email, eBay, Paypal, online forums, etc).

Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breach. Please read the following article for more information: How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

Whilst the identified infection(s) can be removed, there is no way to guarantee the trustworthiness of your computer unless you reformat your Hard Drive and reinstall your Operating System. This is due to the nature of the infection, which allows a remote attacker to make any number of modifications. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of malware, the best course of action is to reformat/reinstall. Please read the following articles for more information.

You now have the choice between cleaning the infection(s) present or reformatting your computer. Ultimately, the decision is personal, and what you're most comfortable please. Have a read of the articles linked, then let me know how you wish to proceed, and if you have any questions.

If you wish to clean the machine now, please work your way through the steps below.

Thank  you, Adam.  You can call me Chris.

After reading the articles in the links you provided, it seems that I would be best off re-formatting my hard drive and re-installing the OS.  Can this be done in lieu of the steps to removal the malware you offered?

If so, is re-formatting and re-installing something I can do, and if so, do you have instructions for re-formatting and re-installing a Windows 7 PC?

I really appreciate your help.

Hi Chris,

Ultimately, it's a personal choice. I will say that most in your situation opt to clean the machine, but it comes down to whatever you're most comfortable with.
A reformat/reinstall will start your computer from scratch. All files, programmes, etc are removed, which of course includes any malware. So this guarantees all malware removed.

An alternative to a reformat/reinstall that essentially does the same job is a restore to factory image.
You have a recovery partition:
Drive d: (RECOVERY) (Fixed) (Total:14.03 GB) (Free:2.32 GB) NTFS ==>[System with boot components (obtained from reading drive)]

This will allow you to restore the computer to how it was when you first turned the machine on, and will also guarantee all malware removed.

If you let me know the make and model of your computer, I can provide the appropriate set of instructions for you.

Hewlett-Packard G62.  Since I don't know much about computers, whatever option is easier is more appealing.

Hello Chris,

It's difficult to say which option is easier.

With cleaning the machine - if all goes to plan, this is probably going to be the easier option. But of course, I cannot foresee how things will pan out.
As for restoring to a factory image - the process is relatively straight forward, but can be time consuming. Especially reconfiguring your machine, reinstalling software, moving across files, etc.

If you are unsure how you wish to proceed - perhaps consider cleaning the machine, and reviewing the situation afterwards. You may find all is well, and decide a restoring to factory image is unnecessary.

You should notice a considerable improvement after carrying out the steps in my original post.

I did the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd steps and am now attempting to reply with the logs.  You're going to love this...I don't know how to attach the TDSSKILLER log...

Hi Chris,

Please upload the large TDSDKiller to my channel:
http://www.bleepingc...php?channel=174

And please copy/paste the contents of Fixlog.txt and ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hi Chris,

RogueKiller did not complete. Please rerun the programme.

It seems like my computer is back to normal.  CPU usage reduced significantly.  I can't tell that there are any other issues, if there are any.

Very good.
Lets check for malware remnants and confirm your machine appears clean.

STEP 1
GfiJrQ9.png Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM)

  • Open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and click Update Now.
  • Once updated, click the Settings tab, followed by Detection and Protection and tick Scan for rootkits.

Hello Chris,

Lets update your vulnerable software to reduce the risk of reinfection.

STEP 2
EtQetiM.png Remove Outdated Software

  • Press the Windows Key pdKOQKY.png + r on your keyboard at the same time. Type appwiz.cpl and click OK.
  • Search for the following programmes, right-click and click Uninstall one at a time.
  • Note: The programmes below may not be present. If this is the case, please skip to the next step.
    • Adobe Reader X (10.1.8)
    • Java 7 Update 45
    • Java™ 6 Update 17 (64-bit)
  • Follow the prompts, and reboot if necessary.

STEP 3
zANS9oB.png Disable Java in Your Browser
Due to frequent exploits we recommend you disable Java in your browser.
For information on Java vulnerabilities, please read the following article (point #7).

  • Click the 29Fou9c.jpg Windows Start Button  and type Java Control Panel (or javacpl) in the search bar.
  • Click on the Java Control Panel. Once opened, click the Security tab.
  • Deselect the check box for Enable Java content in the browser. This will disable the Java plug-in in the browser.
  • Click Apply. When the AVOiBNU.jpg Windows User Account Control (UAC) appears, allow permissions to make the changes.
  • Click OK in the Java Plug-in confirmation window.
  • Restart your browser(s) for changes to take effect.
  • More information can be found here and here.

STEP 4
