Thanks a million, that was quite a long haul but worth it.
Ref antivirus there seems to be McAfee on the machine. No idea where that came from. Would you recommend getting rid and changing for one of those listed, or is McAfee reasonably reliable?

You're welcome.
McAfee on your system is only the Security Scan; I would uninstall it via your Control Panel>Programs and Features.
Make sure you have installed Unchecky and then my choice would be Avast.
