Oh no, not again... can't get to my e-mailbox on Mary's computer to run the fix above. Don't know if my placing the address of my mailbox in Mary's  Chrome homepage, and under Setting, have marked "Continue where you left off", as a quick means of getting to my e-mail on her computer may have something to do with the problem. So, before I can run the above should I repeat the "MiniToolBox drill" and copy/paste with and then FIX with FRST?

Or should I use the same method with a flash drive to complete the tast you outlined above, basically, they are carried out in the same manner. Which first?

Why do you need to get into your email , if you can get online and read this post, just follow the instructions to run the fix

Yes I did... and this is the result... Computer Crashed! ... this is why is try and go slow explaining everything that I see happening; and, more importantly getting my head-around the action and understanding what I am doing before actually carrying out a task. Believe the internet access problem should have been resolved first before doing the last copy and past fix with FRST, but that's only my opinion!

It was fun copying this msg. viewing Mary's computer then walking back and forth between them to type the screen msg. below. A photographic memory would have helped.

BLUE SCREE OF DEATH READS;

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

It this is the first time you have seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps:

Check to be sure you hjave adquate disk space. If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacture for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as catching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced setup options, and then select Safe mode.

Curt, these are my thoughts, both your computers appear to be getting old and out of date, with Windows XP being no longer supported you will not get any more windows updates , most of these are needed to help secure your computer from attack.  As far as your  wife's computer, I am out of ideas, most everything we try to run either will not run or if it does it causes more problems, I think at this point if I was you I would think about getting new computers, if getting two is a problem moneywise than maybe one nice one to share.  Another option on your wife's computer is to format the drive and do a fresh install of windows, I believe besides malware that there are many windows problems preventing you from doing a lot of things, a good fresh install of windows would solve all your problems, you would most likely need your windows CD to do this.

You can post here in our windows forum for help on doing that

http://forums.whatth...p?showforum=119

Good luck,

Ken :)

Ken... thx. for getting back to me thought you'd probably closed out the thread. Please hold it open, as I have been running some of the pgrms that we ran on my computer with some success. If you recall Mary's computer would identify "21 problems" on "MalBytes Anti-Mal" pgrm, and when quarantined I tried to get the report, it was not available. And everything I ran the pgrm the same 21 problems were still present. By my running some of the other pgrms (?); and, running "MalBytes Anti-Mal" this morning... the 21 problems are gone and have deleted them through the pgrm. However, I stilla can't produce a log file. But I might be able to hand copy each of those threats identified in the "Protection Log", or possibly can produce it?

.

As for purchasing new computers sounds like the best option and am thinking about that. As for upgrading, don't know where I can possibly go with that as WinXP is no longer supported, and I am in dire need of more memory to keep these two computers functioning.

Am hoping to be able to run ComboFix later today and am hopeful it will now run since the 21 threats have now been remopved? Will try and get to that later today once I have addressed some pressing personal problems first. Will post what happens here later, hopefully, with a log file or two.

Best Regards, Curt

Hi Curt,

I will keep this thread open for you.

Have you tried opening malwarebytes and on the Dashboard go to History >  Application logs > Scan logs and chose the one that removed all the threats , when it opens you can either Copy to Clipboard and paste it in here, or Export it to your desktop then you will be able to open it and copy and paste it here

Ken... here is the Malbytes log, but was unable to capture one that identified the 21 threats... but, it appears they are gone! Then tried to run ComboFix, but it still won't proceed past the statement about... normally takes less than 10 minutes, longer for computers highly infected." It won't transition into allowing the MS console to install or update. Further, both my computer and Mary's showed a "yellow shield" and both updated a single file titled: "(KB890830) Windows Malicious Software Removal tool. 8/2014" -- Don't know if it has anything to do with problem, or something to do with Windows Installer, or .Net Frameworks?

Thx. for keeping the thjread open, believe if we can get ComboFix to run problems will have been resolved.

Best Regards, Curt

Try this Curt

  •
  • Physically disconnect from the internet and STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields)
  • Click on your START button and choose Run.  Then copy/paste the entire code in RED (Including the "" marks and the Symbols) into the run box.

Go to StartBtn.gif Then Run

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

killall.JPG

  • Click OK and this will start ComboFix in a special way.
  • When finished, it will produce a log.  Please save that log to a Notepad File to post in your next reply .

Ken... followed your instructions and ran the pgrm offline for one hour and twenty minutes (01:20) to no avail... pgrm runs until it reaches the same location, appears to be working while the cursor blinks?

First delete your copy of CF, just drag it to the trash and download a fresh copy, but before you download it to your desktop Rename Combofix.exe to Curt.exe

If it still hangs then do this, with CF still open but hung

Bring up Task Manage using CTRL+ALT+DELETE. See if any of these processes are running ...If they are then Kill process on the first one and then try CF again, try Kill process on each one until CF runs

findstr
sed
grep.
nircmd.exe
nircmd.cfexe
swsc.cfexe
* .. or any other process that has the .cfexe extension except for CFxxx.cfexe

If ComboFix is still 'hung', then kill process on CFxxx.cfexe

Doesn't look like CF removed much but thats good, but under sigcheck its showing possible corrupted files

Go to Start > Run and type in CMD and then ok

When the box opens, you can copy and paste this in     sfc /scannow

This will let windows check for missing or corrupted files and sometimes replaces them, when its done it will just close, there is no report
