Hi,

My laptop is running very slowly.  It takes a while to load web pages and then to navigate the site once I'm there takes quite a while also.  The biggest problem is booting up.  It usually takes more than 10 - 12 minutes before it will allow me to click on my Firefox (or any) icon.

I have a Toshiba Satellite P755 running Windows 7.  I have an Intel i7 processor with 8GB of ram on a 64 bit operating system.  The logfile is below.

Thank you

Guy

Hi there,
my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems.

Before we move on, please read the following points carefully.

  • First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding.
  • Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one.
  • If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem.
  • Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me.
  • Post all logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts.
  • If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.
  • Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean.
  • My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Thanks for your understanding.

Scan with FRST (Recovery Environment)

To run FRST on Vista and Windows7:

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

Enter System Recovery Options.

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:

  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
  • Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account an click Next.

To enter System Recovery Options by using Windows installation disc:
  • Insert the installation disc.
  • Restart your computer.
  • If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc. If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check your BIOS settings.
  • Click Repair your computer.
  • Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account and click Next.

On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:

  • Startup Repair
  • System Restore
  • Windows Complete PC Restore
  • Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
  • Command Prompt
  • Select Command Prompt

  • In the command window:
  • type in notepad and press Enter.
  • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
  • Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
  • In the command window type e:\frst.exe (for x64 bit version type e:\frst64) and press Enter
  • Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
  • The tool will start to run.
  • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.

It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

Hi Marius,

Thanks for helping me.  I'm having a problem getting my laptop to read the flash drive from the notepad.  When I read the drive in normal mode it's just fine.  I put the flash drive in another pc and it read it and saw the file just fine but with the command prompt in safe mode I keep getting a message that the drive is not ready.  Any thoughts or could I save the file to my c drive and run it from there?

Thanks,

Guy

Please try different USB ports.

If it fails again, you may start it from your hard disk.

For some reason it ran from the flash drive.  So here are the 2 files it produced.

You should run it from the Recovery Environment, wasn´t this possible?

I responded to this yesterday but it looks like it got lost somewhere.

When I try to run it from recovery mode (Safe mode) using the directions you provided (with notepad) it will not recognize any files on the flash drive.  When I try to run it from my C drive it sees the file but all it can read is gobly gook.

I went back to try to run it from the flash drive again and it still didn't recognize any file on the drive.  So I started typing the name and up it came.  However, I got the gobley gook again.  So garbage from trying to read it off the C drive and garbage from the flash also.

Create/Scan with Kaspersky Rescue Disk

Follow the instructions on this page for downloading the kav_rescue_10.iso (200 mb) file and creating the Kaspersky Rescue Disk.

Make sure you set to boot the machine from the CDRom drive first. Then save and exit the BIOS. The computer will begin to boot. Insert the disc in the CDrom drive, then restart the machine. It should then boot from that CD.

It's best if you refer to the instructions and images at Kaspersky How to record Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 to a CD/DVD and boot my computer from the disk?

Once it boots from CD, press a key so it continues to boot from that CD.

Select the language, then be sure to select Kaspersky Rescue Disk Graphic Mode.

Kaspersky should begin scanning your machine. If it finds infection, look carefully at the files it lists. If any of them seem to be legit files, do not allow it to clean/quarantine/delete them. Rather, save the log and post the results for me to look over.

I'm sorry but my laptop is not allowing me to do anything you're asking of me.  I've never had such a time.   Here's what's going on.

I went to the Kaspersky page to follow the instructions on creating the resuce disk.

Step 1.  Downloaded the program - no problem.

Step 2.  Burn it to a disk - no problem.

Step 3  This is where the problems start.  I hit F2 to get into the BIOS which I'm familiar with.  Next, the instructions say to select

loading from a REMOVABLE drive and connect a USB drive with the program on it.  Well, earlier it says burn it to a DVD.

So I selected to boot from the DVD drive instead of a flash drive since we'd had no instructions to put anything on a USB

drive to that point.  I saved it and exited and then rebooted, expecting it to load the progarm from the DVD.  It promptly

loaded Windows from the C drive.  I tried this several times with the same results.  Then I thought since it said something

about a USB drive that I woud copy the program to a USB drive and try it that way.  During the copy process I got a

notification that there was a problem because there was no program associated with this file.  I let it finish copying and

rebooted and hit F2 to change the drive from which it was reading from.to boot.  This time I didn't get the normal BIOS

screen, I got the Windows Boot Manager screen (which I'm not familiar with).  I can't figure out how to get back to the

regular BIOS screen.  So, since I couldn't change anything I put the flash ddrive in and rebooted to see if by some miracle it

would read it but, of course, it didn't.

Bottom line is I can't figure out what to do on step 3 and I've changed my settings and can't figure out how to get back to the "normal" BIOS page to fix it.  Are we trying to boot from a flash drive or a DVD?

skip Kaspersky:

Combofix

Combofix should only be run when adviced by a team member!

Link

Important - Save the file to your desktop!

  • Deactivate any and all of your antivirus programs /spyware scanners - they can prevent CF from doing its work.
  • Run Combofix.exe

When finished, Combofix creates a log file named C:\Combofix.txt. Please post its content in your next reply.

Note: When receiving an error message containing ""Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion" simply restart your computer to fix this.

I had to delete Spybot to get it to run.  Let me know when I can re-install it.

Thanks
