Here's what happened:

 

I tried to download a movie that wouldn't stream and this thing (websearch.searchinweb) took over before I could cancel it.

 

What I've done so far:

 

Avast picked the intrusion up instantly and quarantined some stuff, then recommended a complete pre-boot scan which I let it do ... it removed all kinds of junk including the websearch thing.

 

Then I googled it and ran "Junkware Removal Tool (JRT)" by Thisisu - recommended for this particular infection and it found some stuff and removed it - I have the log if it's needed.

 

Then it looked good and clean, opened firefox without a problem, but when I checked Chrome, it was still the default browser ... and then when I closed Chrome and reopened firefox, it came back there too.

I then ran another tool recommended for this particular beast - "HitmanPro 3.7.9.212" which also found stuff related to it and removed it - I have that log also if needed - but the blasted thing is still in there!

 

All of this happened today, the only other thing I did today was download a supposedly high rated and safe player - "DivX" ... which I'll be glad to remove if it's part of the problem.

PS: (edit) I use "No Script" in firefox, and I blocked the trojan site, NOW I cannot open any links on google, although the search page functions, any link I click on produces a "problem loading page window"

 

Edit # 2

Just lost all internet connection in all browsers ... tried to do a system restore, it won't accept it.

Disconnected cable and tried again, same thing

Restarted everything and reconnected cable ... internet came back
When it restarted, I saw a blue screen for a few seconds with the word "Hitman Pro"
 

What the heck is going on here?

Please run the following:

 

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

 

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

• Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.

• Press Scan button.

• It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

• The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

 

 

NEXT

 

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit (MBAR) from here and save it to your desktop.

• Be sure to print out and follow the instructions provided on that same page.

• Caution: This is a beta version so please be sure to read the disclaimer and back up any important data before using.

• Doubleclick on the MBAR file you downloaded and approve the UAC prompt in Vista and newer operating systems.

• Click OK on the next screen, to allow the package to extract the contents of the file to its own folder, mbar.

• mbar.exe will launch automatically. On some systems, this may take a few extra seconds. Please be patient and wait for the program to open.

• After reading the Introduction, click 'Next' if you agree.

• On the Update Database screen, click on the 'Update' button.

• Once you see 'Success: Database was successfully updated' click on 'Next'.

• Click the 'Scan' button.

 

With some infections, you may see two messages boxes.

• 'Could not load protection driver'. Click 'OK'.

• 'Could not load DDA driver'. Click 'Yes' to this message, to allow the driver to load after a restart. Allow the computer to restart. Continue with the rest of these instructions.

 

If malware is found, do NOT press the Cleanup button when the scan completes. Click EXIT.

Then, please send the following logs as attachments to your reply.

These logs are located in the mbar folder on your desktop where the tool extracted itself to.
