Thanks a bunch.
Welcome to the forum. :D

This will take a few steps so lets get started.

Please do the following,

Step #1

You have a peper infection that we need to remove

http://www.memorywatcher.com/uninst.exe

When you run the uninstaller, you MUST have an internet connection active for it to work

This Peper removal tool only works if run twice. To complete each stage of the Peper removal you need to REBOOT to clear the peper infection each time you run the tool, or the infection will remain.

Step #2

Please download and run Spybot Search & Destroy and AdAware. Then follow the instructions in the links below to run.

Spybot Tutorial

AdAware Tutorial

Step # 3

Please do an online scan, 2 would be better,

Panda http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/activescan.asp

Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Reboot and post a new HiJackThis log. You need an updated version of Hijackthis which you can get from HERE.
The only thing I was unable to do was the online scan at PandaSoft. Was I supposed to click on the moving gif in the middle of the page to activate the scan? Neither Netscape nor IE considered it a valid link. The TrendMicro scan worked just fine, though.

Okay, here's my next logfile. I really appreciate your prompt reply and advice.

Here you go. Continued thanks for your help.

I have a new issue, however. Norton AV keeps giving me a virus alert with the following:

"Object Name: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\LOGD.DLL
Virus Name: Backdoor.Trojan
Action Taken: Unable to repair this file"

When I click 'OK', I instantly get the same alert with the following:

"Action Taken: Access to the file was denied"

From this point, every time I click 'OK', I get one of the two variations of the alert. After about 10 clicks, it finally goes away, only to return after a minute or two. The only way I can get it to go away for an entire session is to get into Task Manager and click End Task.

Any idea why Norton is acting this way? Again, I really appreciate your assistance.

Log looks clean. Lets do this just to check. Please turn off system restore and then turn it back on, instructions on how to in the link below. Sometimes viruses or partial viruses are stuck in system restore and thats why your AV can not remove it.

http://www.pchell.com/virus/systemrestore.shtml

Then do an online scan here.

http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/free_utilities.asp

Let me know if it reports anything or if your resident av still gives you those pop up warnings.
At first blush, the hijacking issues appear to be solved. We have had some problems with system memory getting too low after running the computer for > 1 hour, and the computer running very slowly as a result, so I will be checking that going forward. The same backdoor.trojan alert is still popping up, however. Any other suggestions? Thanks again.
Here is some information on it.

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen…oor.trojan.html

Do this please

I would like you to download and run Trojan Hunter. It is free for 30 days. Let it fix what it finds.

Download Trojan Hunter(trial version).
Next go Here and download the latest update zip file.
Install Trojan Hunter and make a note of the full path to the folder where it is installed, by default this is
X:\program files\TrojanHunter 3.8 (X is the drive Trojan Hunter is installed on, usually C).
After installation unzip the update file you downloaded to the installation folder you took note of.
Say "Yes to All" when you are asked about replacing files.
You have to completely shut down Trojan Hunter for the new files to be used.
Double click the desktop icon to restart Trojan Hunter, click to continue evaluation.
Click the "Full Scan" button on the upper left.

Let me know if it finds anything and if it finds something but can not remove it note where the file is. Then post back please
Unfortunately, Trojan Hunter didn't catch the problem. I just uninstalled and reinstalled Norton AV, and I did not get any alerts following reboot. Thank you so much for your help. Have a great day.
Okay, it looks like the problem still remains. It just took a few minutes for it to show up. Plus an additional problem has arisen. It appears that I can no longer connect to my email. When I launch Netscape Mail, I get a popup message that says "Alert: Could not connect to server pop-server.insight.rr.com; connection is refused." Is this a by-product of something we have done? None of my server or account settings have been changed recently. Please help, if possible. Thanks.
Oh, and now Norton indicates "Auto-Protect: Off" and "Email Scanning: Error". The Auto-Protect does not enable when I press the enable button, and when I click on email scanning it does not offer any way to fix the problem. Did I delete something that I was not supposed to? Ok lets try this as you may have picked up a nasty coolwebsearch sometime in the past.

Please download AboutBuster from here and unzip it to your desktop

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip

Double click the AboutBuster.exe file. Click OK, click Start, then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report it creates (copy and paste it into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file).

Then post back with a new Hijackthis log and the About:buster log please.
Done. Didn't appear to find much:

How does it look? Thanks.
Would it help to buy Norton AV 2004, or could I expect to have the same problems with the new version that I am having now? I am running NAV 2003 currently.
Your log looks good.

In regards to Norton Anti Virus programs are mostly a matter of preference. You can go to many security forums and see advocates for all AV. I personally use Noston 2004 but thats me and any program can act differently in each sytem depending on the specs. I will say this though Kapersky generally scores the highest for catching new viruses and has the overall best hit rate. But like I said its up to you.

Ok you ready for the fireside chat? :weee:

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. In my signature below is also a tutorial on how to harden IE, a good read and very helpful to stop these things in the future. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on.

Safe Surfing. :D
