I could not download Dell manuals but friends could. B/c both pcs had the same trouble I went to the Comcast Gateway router and found by lowering to 'weak' from 'normal' I could perform the download.
This is what is said next to the router's medium; "Typical Security (Medium): Blocks P2P applications and pings to the Gateway, but allows all other traffic."
My question is; " With Win 8.1 is this P2P setting normal and what I should be using, or is it abnormal and should be changed?
I tried 3 browsers and finally i got Chrome to paste here. I hope it is OK. This is where I click on to get to the site in my picture post above. When I click on the manual, it says page cannot be viewed. Does it work for you?
I am using Win firewall which I reset to default, Comcast's gateway which is what allows or disallows the P2P, MBAM and lastly SpywareBlaster. There are some settings there but I don't think any of them would be blocking the P2P but I could be wrong. It is not real time protection and I cannot find any other setting that is off.
I did a driver reset the other day as I had an issue - could that have caused a problem with P2P?
It reset NVIDIA and Engine.
Were you able to download any manual from Dell with the link supplied? I can download everything else from Dell except that.
What gets me is the side note from Comcast that P2P should be blocked with the medium setting yet others are able to download the manuals. I have them as they were emailed to me. However whether or not I have a problem is the question.
still no idea why you think or are told those pdf links are anything to do with p2p. they are direct links to pdf documents on a ftp server so have nothing to do with p2p..
i can either left click on them and they open in my browser so i can read them (need a pdf reader installed for the browser, either built in or an add on.),
or
i can right click on them and then click on save link as in the popup and get another popup where i can specify what and where i want to save them as.
personally i'd say you have a problem somewhere, i don't see any firewall or anti-virus software blocking those links unless maybe you've changed how pdf files are handled on your machine and maybe specified that they should be handled by p2p software or something. sorry don't run windows so can't really help but that would be my best guess.
Thank you anyway Terry. I set my gateway to factory and the typical setting is medium which quotes the P2P words above.
Comcast wants to charge.
Maybe someone will jump in when they have time?
May I ask, could a driver reset have caused this? One was my video card, one was engine and I don't remember the 3rd.
I never use automatic driver programs but a ?reliable source told me to use a product as the NVIDEA was having issues with the update and Windows wanted to install.
The thing I am confused about is that both pcs cannot access the manuals unless the gateway setting is lowered then they both can get them.
Wouldn't that mean an adjustment to one pc was not to blame?
A refresh would not help the other pc neither would a system restore.
So if it is not the gateway and both pcs cannot get the downloads, doesn't that leave the gateway setting?
As per the others, I have no issue with P2P as you describe, don't see how a driver could affect such a thing, it's more likely to be an association problem if you can't see\use pdf downloads, have you tried clicking on the links terry1966 posted above ?
When I click them they open in a new page, and then offers me to download or open the file (the bar at the bottom, the page stays blank), if you have not clicked those yet, click them and see what happens, and don't forget, as noted above you can also right click on a link, and select to save as, so see what happens there.
Should you still get the same problem, my best guess would be the file association has been altered, check under; Control panel - Default Programs - Set Associations, give it a minute to scan and load your file types, when loaded scroll down (drag the side bar is faster) to the pdf entry (it's listed alphabetically), and see what it is set to open with, if it's anything other than an appropriate pdf reader (Adobe for most), click on it and change it to your pdf reader, see if any of this helps.
Well I'm no expert with security, so others may know better, but personally I would simply click the Defaults button, from what I can see it will set it to Low, which is the recommended option, when it comes to possible settings issues causing problems, I just reset them all to the default, they are the settings known to work the best, and protect you, changing anything in that area needs someone with a good knowledge of what will be affected in making certain changes, see if that helps.
