============= FINISH: 15:56:41.01 ===============
This is proving to be a strange problem and as there is no obvious signs of rootkits/viruses.

Because I can’t see any obvious signs, I’ve looked again at the logs you’ve run and found one entry that we usually regard to be a “false-positive”. In this case, on closer inspection, the ID number doesn’t Google so I’d like to get it checked.

Please do these in the order given.

Uninstall programs

MapsGalaxy Firefox Toolbar

This is installed without permission and is a “browser hijacker”. It serves no useful purpose.

COMODO System Utilities

The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results". Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, (and you are expert in the registry), I would suggest you leave the registry alone.

I strongly advise you to get rid of COMODO System Utilities and any other cleaner/optimizer/booster/tuneup/tweak type utilities that you have on this or any other computer.

One of the malware experts, miekiemoes, has an excellent write-up here
Another excellent article by Bill Castner is located here

I suggest that you uninstall:

MapsGalaxy Firefox Toolbar
COMODO System Utilities
  • click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add or remove programs
  • click on MapsGalaxy Firefox Toolbar and then Uninstall
  • repeat this for COMODO System Utilities.
If you do not want to uninstall COMODO System Utilities, please disable/stop it now and leave it that way while we are cleaning your computer.

Reset proxy settings

This proxy needs to be removed but something is stopping OTL from removing it so we’ll do it manually.

In Internet Explorer go to Tools, Internet Options

Click on the “Connections” tab then Lan Settings, remove the entry for 127.0.0.1:5555, then uncheck "Use a proxy server" and check "Automatically detect settings".

If you use Firefox click on Tools, Options “Advanced” tab, “Network” tab then Settings. Select the Auto-detect proxy settings for this network then click OK.

===================================================

Note: If you have MalwareBytes Anti-Malware 1.6 or higher installed and are using the Pro version or trial version, please temporarily disable it for the duration of this fix as it may interfere with the successfully execution of the script below.

Satchfan
Satchfan,

I removed Comodo System Utilities with no problems. When I attempted to remove MapsGalaxy Firefox Toolbar, I got the following error:

RUNDLL

error loading c:\Program Files\MapsGalaxy_39\bar\1.bin\39bar.dll

The specified module could not be found

So I removed Firefox completely (I hated that anyway).

When I re-set the proxy settings, there was no entry 127.0.0.1:5555 to be found in Lan Settings, everything was blank.

I ran OTL and the log is below. When the computer restarted and I attempted to run Virus Total, it locked up after about 45 minutes and nothing happened. I checked Task Manager and it was not responding. It is getting late so I thought I'd stop and post what I have and wait for your response. I also noted there are 2 files titled sptd and sptd1085 so I tried sptd but not the other.

So I removed Firefox completely (I hated that anyway).

Should you decide to, you can always re-install it - Firefox, as well as Internet Explorer, are far more reliable browsers than Chrome, (which we have numerous problems with and I wouldn’t have on my PC).

there are 2 files titled sptd and sptd1085 so I tried sptd but not the other.

It would have done no harm submitting both but sptd.sys is the one I mean.

Go to Jotti and try using the scanner there to run a check on the sptd.sys file.

Please send a new OTL log also.

Thanks

Satchfan
Google Chrome is not reliable? I hate Firefox due to the pop ups and all of the other carp** that kept happening, like videos playing on the home screen at random etc. etc. I'll run the scans when I get home, hopefully I can take care of it immediately and not get side tracked by family issues.

I hate Firefox due to the pop ups

If you download it directly from the Mozilla site you shouldn't get any - I use IE for most things but Firefox for some of the forums I help at, and I never get popups.

I'll wait to hear from you, (I'm also a bit busy so don't rush :) ).
I ran the Jotti scan and this is what came up in the status box of the Malware scan window: File is empty (0 bytes)! I checked the file's properties via windows and this is what I got: 648 KB (664,064 bytes). I ran Virus Total again and it stops at: Uploading File……. Please wait, do not close the window until the upload ends. The time required for this operation depends on the file size, the net load and your connection speed. Computing hash…………………….
Let's try disabling it and then try Virus Total again.

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.
  • double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • the application window will appear
  • click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • click Yes to continue
  • a 'Finished!' message will appear, click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Satchfan

Each type of virus checker came up with a green check by it

That's good.

I'd like to look at a new OTL log and Extras log:
  • open OTL again, click on Extra Registry -> Use Safelist
  • then click Run Scan
You should now get an OTL and an Extras log.

When you post back with the logs, can you tell me how the computer is running and what outstanding problems remain.

Thanks

Satchfan
I will run the scans when I get home tonight. I am having a really difficult time getting the computer to boot up properly. I get a blue "HP" window with the escape, F1 and F10 selections on the bottom but the screen "oscillates" and is blurry. It will then transition to a black screen with a flashing cursor in the top left corner as stated before and then it will either stay in this state or the cursor will disappear but nothing else happens. If I shut the computer off via the power button, this scenario repeats itself. Sometimes I can get it to boot with a clear "HP" screen at which point it will successfully boot up. I also noticed that the Power Supply fan is not operating. However if I shut off the power switch on the back of the computer next to the power plug, it will come on, but only for a few seconds and then shuts off when the computer begins the boot up process and remains off. I did get it to stay on for an extended period, but the computer was not booting up at the time. When the computer does finally boot properly, it appears to work fine and is alot faster.

< End of report >
I’m still not happy about these proxy settings.

When your computer is stable and you use the Internet, are there any problems locating the pages you want?

I’m going to ask some of our most experienced colleagues if they can see something I’m missing: meanwhile, please run a couple more scans that will give more information.

Run MiniToolBox

Note: When using the "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option, Firefox should be closed.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Place a checkmark in the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

===================================================

Run Farbar Service Scanner

Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.

Make sure the following options are checked:

Internet Services
Windows Firewallsfc
System Restore
Security Center/Action Center
Windows Update
Windows Defender
Other Services

  • press "Scan".
  • it will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • please copy and paste the log to your reply.
Logs to include in the next post:

Result.txt
FSS.txt

Thanks
