My PC seemed both slow and lacking in space considering what little I thought I had in it and what little I thought I had "running on it."

I Knew I had to do some cleaning so I downloaded easycleaner 2.0 and when using it to see my start-ups I learned that I had mssams.exe in my start-ups although it does not show up in the sys. config. utility when I manually do: start/run/msconfig.

At this point I used my Avast (free home version) to do a deep scan of everything, it took forever and found nothing,.

Also, my computer has been doing other strange things such as my mouse refusing to scroll for a few minutes for no reason. Web pages would stop responding. (I am studying Spanish and spend a lot of time watching videos in that language and when doing so I noticed the problems the most. )Then I remembered that when I save a document in notepad (I rarely use this) it allows me to choose to save it as a .txt and in my documents but it does not actually save it. (at least not where I save it to.)

So I updated my Anti-malwarebytes anti malware and did a deep scan which did find problems with the word "notepad" in the description but it did not find the mssams.exe. I unsuccessfully attempted to save a copy of the log in my documents but as it was in "notepad" it did not save. No problem though because it is still in the Malwarebytes program and I will copy and paste it below … just before my "HJT" log which was done "after" malwarebytes did it's thing.

Unfortunately I did allow Malwarebytes to attemp to fix it - (it is locked in quarantine with a few others from a couple years ago) before I read on this forum that I should not have done so. Sorry about that. I hope this information makes it easier and not harder for you.

I Sincerely Thank You in Advance for your help with this issue!
Hi there,
my name is Marius and I will be assisting you with your Malware related problems.

Before we move on, please read the following points carefully.
  • First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding.
  • Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one.
  • If you have any problems while you are follow my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem.
  • Do not run any other scans without instruction or Add/ Remove Software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me.
  • Post all Logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts.
  • If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.
  • Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean.
  • My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Thanks for your understanding.

Scan with DDS

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or
here.

Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.

When done, DDS will open two (2) logs
DDS.txt
Attach.txt
Save both reports to your desktop.

Scan with Gmer rootkit scanner

Please download Gmer from here by clicking on the "Download EXE" Button.
  • Double click on the randomly named GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Show All ( should be unchecked by default )
  • Leave everything else as it is.
  • Close all other running programs as well as your Browser.
  • Click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the Save.. button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
  • Please post the content of the ark.txt here.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
Hello Marius :wavey: ,

My name is Nan.

Thank you so very, very much for getting back to me so quickly!

It is interesting to note that given my problems with notepad that the .txt's from these scans are actually saving to my desktop as is.

I don't know whether you want to be bothered with my comments or not? So I'll try to keep this short but I would like to comment that RE: DDS findings- If I was running AVG on my PC at the same time as my Avast, I was completely unaware of it. I once downloaded but if I remember correctly it caused problems and I either deleted or disabled it long ago and the only things "I can see" in my Icon Tray are a mouse, a speaker and Avast. Oh and the clock too.

I hope this did not hurt anything but I accidentally forgot to close my browser for the first few minutes of the GMER scan and also Avast did it's self-updating thing during it.

Here are my logs:

Nan
Hello Marius, Oh my Goodness. The strangest thing happened at about 9:53 AM on my computer. :o I had just finished using "Wordpad" (because of my notepad problems, I use wordpad) to type a letter and print it. I still had all 3 of the notepad .txt's on my taskbar from when I copied and pasted them into my reply to you. I expanded one of them open to have a look see and at the top of the document words were in a huge font and moving very quickly across the page or off of the page. It was freaky. I swear to you that this is the absolute truth even though I know it sounds crazy. So I tried to close it real quick but I got a message in a box that said "The text in this document has changed, do you want to save the changes? I tried so hard to click NO. "The yes box had the black square outline on it as if it were selected but not yet pushed." Then out of my speakers came this horrible sound that is very difficult to explain but it was like my mouse was stuck in a mistake and it would not go away until I clicked Yes to accept the changes and then x to close it. Then the very same thing happened to the other 2 .txt files except that on the other two I did not distinctly see large text moving across the page like on the first one but I could not close them without clicking yes and when I tried try to click no.. here comes the grinding sound and I do remember that on one of them there was the line of my cursor but is was about 1 and a half inches tall as if I were using a huge font and it was racing back and forth across the page in tune with this grinding noise. I'm sorry but it all happened so fast that I did not see which of the 3 documents was which. Anyway, I got all of 3 of them closed and they are still sitting on my desktop but I am terrified to open them due to this even though I know there are changes on all 3 of them. It might be a benefit or a help to you to see what they look like now but I think that if you want to I should attempt to zip and attach them which I did not do the first time because of the instructions I got from you at the top of your post to me which advised me to paste even if it took more than one reply. I don't understand what is happening here, it is like being in a Steven King novel but if this "thing" or whatever could only do it's damage during the short time that I had it expanded to read then the changes may be only minor except that first one with the huge font moving and my attempting to click NO so many times so it had more time. I suspect this may be the case because it looked as if the thing were doing it's damage from the top downward and the last two I got rid of much more quickly. I don't know what, if anything, you would like me to do with this situation but I think that it might be a good idea on any future things that you need from me to think of another way to get them to you besides pasting from a .txt. Could we try it in wordpad? I am using wordpad to pretype this and it seems to work just fine. I'm sorry for replying to my own message so to speak but I figured you might need to know about this freaky thing that happened. Thank You for your time, Nan

* IMPORTANT- Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

====================================================

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications as they will interfere with our tools and the removal. If you are unsure how to do this, please refer to our sticky topic How to disable your security applications

====================================================

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.
Hello, Before it would run I received a warning that I still had AVG enabled and to stop it before clicking OK. Well, I had already shut down my Avast and as I said before, I had no idea that AVG could even be running as it is not in my Start up menu, nor my icon tray, nor does it appear in my system configuration utility when I go to Start/Run/msconfig/start up so because of this I am skeptical about AVG really being AVG. So I went ahead and hit "OK" anyway. At which point I recieved a warning that it would go ahead but it was at my own risk. I accepted that risk. When it was finished there was a very very long restart and when it all finally came back on I got a box saying that my system had just recovered from a very serious error and I looked at the details but I don't know how to do that screenshot thing. So I sent the error message to microsoft but as for the log… there is no log on my desktop to include in this message and I am doing a search for it based on the C:\ComboFix.txt in your instructions and in C: I find the ComboFix program itself but no .txt file. Can you please tell me where I can find it? Incidentally, my Avast is now back on after restart. Thank you for your help… and in the meantime I will continue to search for the log for you.
Hi Marius, Somehow, and this may be due to my using slang in my language or something but I am unable to explain to you that AVG is running without my knowledge and there is no usual place from which to uninstall it or deactivate it. What I mean is: I now use AVAST for virus protection and I am easily able to deactivate it. AVG is a "different" antivirus program that I downloaded a very long time ago and it caused horrible things to happen to my computer so I deleted it. At least I thought I did until the results of some of these logs have come in and I read them. AVG is not in my icon tray AVG is not on my start up menu AVG is not anywhere in my ADD/REMOVE Programs even when using easycleaner which shows more programs than my windows add/remove program It obviously must be in my running processes somewhere but I don't know how to find that. I DO have a folder called AVG in my program files but the entire thing is only 16 mg (much much smaller than AVG should be) and there is no .exe for the AVG itself (just the little monitoring services that go with it and there is no uninstall program for any of it in there either. I have zipped up the entire folder and will attach it to this message so you can see this for yourself. I will take the AVG folder I have and dump it in the recycle bin since it can't be found to uninstall and I will again disable MY Avast and attempt the combo fix again but if I still get that warning that AVG is running somewhere, well I am afraid to put my PC through another "serious error recovery" again. Please read and advise and thank you so much for your time. :) Nan PS.. I have twice tried to upload the folder but it didn't work and I see now it is because even compressed it is too large.
Okay even with the AVG folder in the trash I am getting that warning that it is running from combofix. I did see where it has backed up my registry and stored it via erunt or whatever but that may not help me if my computer completely quits because I won't be able to get here. Please advise before I click OK? Nan
Hi Marius,

Glad I got it done before before you had to leave for the day, it took combofix quite some time to do it's thing but I think it may have been a good thing.

Combofix scripting

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Download the attached CFScript.txt and save it to the location where Combofix is.

[external image: Posted Image]

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Attachments:

I am getting a warning that both AVAST and AVG are running even though no icons in tray and start ups have apparently been disabled. Should I go into safe mode and do this? And if so, will I need to drag the script into combofix again?
