Hi Guys.

I have an old PC that has served me well, I've had it for some time and it was second hand before I got it. However, it's now running painfully slow.

It's left on most of the time as I use it for Twitter, FB and our football club website via firefox. The fan kicks in a lot and it takes a long time to boot up (make a cup of tea while you wait). Often it's not capable of running multiple applications (such as notepad and FF/Explorer or Open Office and FF/Explorer). When changing applications it can sometimes take quite a while. It does have it's moments where it runs completely fine however, which gives me hope :) I don't receive any error messages that I can think of.

Any ideas or is it for the bucket?

Your help is appreciated.

Just a wee update…

I've ran the fixes and procedures mentioned in this thread What to do if your Computer's running slowly and it does seem to have had an impact however, every now and again while trying to multitask or open firefox / explorer the fan kicks in and everything slows down to a crawl.

Just old

Here's the update HijackThis log:

Hi there,
my name is Marius and I will be assisting you with your Malware related problems.

Before we move on, please read the following points carefully.
  • First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding.
  • Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one.
  • If you have any problems while you are follow my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem.
  • Do not run any other scans without instruction or Add/ Remove Software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me.
  • Post all Logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts.
  • If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.
  • Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean.
  • My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Thanks for your understanding.

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or
here.

Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.

When done, DDS will open two (2) logs
DDS.txt
Attach.txt
Save both reports to your desktop.

Please download Gmer from here by clicking on the "Download EXE" Button.
  • Double click on the randomly named GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Show All ( should be unchecked by default )
  • Leave everything else as it is.
  • Close all other running programs as well as your Browser.
  • Click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the Save.. button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
  • Please post the content of the ark.txt here.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
Hi Marius, thanks for helping me with this. I'm away from the pc for a few days but as soon as I get back I'll get to work on your instructions. Thanks again. Davie.
Hi Marius,

Sorry for the delay. I followed the instructions in your post.

Here are the DDS and ARK txt docs. I've also attached the zipped doc.

* IMPORTANT- Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

====================================================

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications as they will interfere with our tools and the removal. If you are unsure how to do this, please refer to our sticky topic How to disable your security applications

====================================================

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.
Hi Marius,

How are you?

Here is the txt file from ComboFix. I should let you know that after ComboFix automatically rebooted my system, my wireless connection and comodo programs, automatically launched while the message "do not start any other programs until ComboFix has finished running" was still on the screen. Is this okay?

Scan with FRST in normal mode

Please download Farbar's Recovery Scan Tool to your desktop: FRST 32bit or FRST 64bit (If not sure: Start –> Computer (right click) –> properties)

  • Run FRST.
  • Don´t change one of the checkboxes and hit Scan.
  • Logfiles are created on your desktop.
  • Poste the FRST.txt and (after the first scan only!) the Addition.txt.
Okay, downloaded and installed. I ran the file without changing any of the check boxes (so only List BCD and Drivers MD5 remained unticked). When the scan completed a message popped up which said the file would be saved to the same location and then a further message that said the file could not be created, do you want to create a new file (notepad). I selected yes to both messages and it opened two blank notepad windows. So, unfortunately I have no FRST.txt or Addition.txt info to post. Did I do something wrong?

System File Check

For Windows XP:

  • Press the Windows- and the R-key simultanously.
  • Within the text box that jus opened, write cmd and hit Enter.

For Windows Vista/7:

  • Press the Windows key to open the start menu.
  • Don´t highlight anything, just write cmd.
  • The start menu will offer you an entry named cmd.
  • Right click it and select "run as administrator"

Within the opening window, write the following:

sfc /scannow
(See the blank within).

  • Hit enter. Your system will be checked for damaged system files.
  • Tell me the result of that scan in here (as the tool produces no log).
I got the following message …

Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache.

I don't have CDs. Everything came installed on this PC.

Also, Comodo gave me an error message when I booted the pc today "Comodo could not be started".

I got a pop up that said "Comodo antierror has detected one or more PC issues. I have two options - Fix or Later.
