Norton did not catch this for some reason. Neither did AdAware. I was watching a video stream of my niece's softball game, and this seems to have happened after that event. Thanks in advance for any help. I have a Tech Conference this coming weekend. I hope I can get this resolved by then! Hi there,
my name is Marius and I will be assisting you with your Malware related problems.

Before we move on, please read the following points carefully.
  • First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding.
  • Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one.
  • If you have any problems while you are follow my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem.
  • Do not run any other scans without instruction or Add/ Remove Software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me.
  • Post all Logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts.
  • If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.
  • Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean.
  • My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Thanks for your understanding.

Please download Farbar's Recovery Scan Tool to your desktop: FRST 32bit or FRST 64bit (If not sure: Start –> Computer (right click) –> properties)

  • Run FRST.
  • Don´t change one of the checkboxes and hit Scan.
  • Logfiles are created on your desktop.
  • Poste the FRST.txt and (after the first scan only!) the Addition.txt.

Please download Gmer from here by clicking on the "Download EXE" Button.
  • Double click on the randomly named GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Show All ( should be unchecked by default )
  • Leave everything else as it is.
  • Close all other running programs as well as your Browser.
  • Click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the Save.. button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
  • Please post the content of the ark.txt here.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries
Thank you so much for your time, Marius. Here is the FRST scan. I will put the Addition in the next reply box. And then run the GMR as you requested.

I downloaded the GREM as requested and ran it. As it finished I was reading your instructions on what to do next when the screen flashed blue for about 5 seconds, and then the computer rebooted. Should I just go through the steps again click on the download exe button etc? The computer seems to be just the same as it was just before that event. I do find the randomly named file in my downloads, now, too. Run as administrator and continue as noted in the first post? Thanks!
Nope!

Skip that and do the following:

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from here Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit and save it to your desktop.

Be sure to print out and follow the instructions provided on that same page.

Caution: This is a beta version so please be sure to read the disclaimer and back up any important data before using.

  • Double click the mbar.zip file to open it, then 'Extract all files'.
  • Double click the mbar folder to open it, then double click mbar.exe to start the tool.
Check for Updates, then Scan your system for malware

If malware is found, do NOT press the Cleanup button yet. Click EXIT.

I'd like to see the log first so I can see what it sees. You'll find the log in that mbar folder as MBAR-log-***.txt . Please attach that to your next reply.
Here is the MBAR log: Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit BETA 1.06.0.1003 www.malwarebytes.org Database version: v2013.06.20.09 Windows Vista Service Pack 2 x86 NTFS Internet Explorer 9.0.8112.16421 Laura :: LAURA-PC [administrator] 6/20/2013 3:00:39 PM mbar-log-2013-06-20 (15-00-39).txt Scan type: Quick scan Scan options enabled: Anti-Rootkit | Drivers | MBR | Physical Sectors | Memory | Startup | Registry | File System | Heuristics/Extra | Heuristics/Shuriken | Deep Anti-Rootkit Scan | PUM | P2P Scan options disabled: PUP Objects scanned: 217444 Time elapsed: 57 minute(s), 56 second(s) Memory Processes Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Folders Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Files Detected: 0 (No malicious items detected) Physical Sectors Detected: 2 Master Boot Record on Drive #0 (Unknown Rootkit MBR Infection) -> No action taken. Run another scan with mbar.exe and click the CleanUp button. It will require a reboot. When it has rebooted, run another scan with mbar.exe and click CleanUp again if necessary. Send the mbar-log.txt along with an update on machine behavior.
delete the mbar folder and download the tool again. Start your system in safe mode, extract and run mbar, then clean up and post the log here.

I do now get a relentless "A website wants to open web content using this program on your computer" from Adobe. It takes 6-8 clicks on it to get it to stop popping up, but the minute I open a new tab or click a link to the next page it starts all over again. But random audio appears to be gone. Will let it sit for a full hour to confirm as it did not seem to have a pattern.
Combofix

Combofix should only be run when adviced by a team member!

Important - Save the file to your desktop!

  • Deactivate any and all of your antivirus programs /spyware scanners - they can prevent CF from doing its work.
  • Run Combofix.exe

When finished, Combofix creates a log file named C:\Combofix.txt. Please post its content in your next reply.
Here is the combo fix log. The Adobe Flash window pop up is now gone!
